Comment: <lol> @ Train because just last night I was telling my 9 year old daughter how I really don't like the lyrical content of today's hip hop r&b music. I wish they had hip hop for grown folk. I just can't get with these artists because the content is so juvenile. This after watching the new RayJ video. Funny, as the artist gets older, the move is to still appeal to the younger demographic. The music of the '70s had great lyrical and musical content and we're jamming to it to day. I just don't see that quality in today's music because it's not about the music/art. It's all about the buck.

Comment: I just can't see myself listening to today's r & b at a bar-b-que 10-15 yrs from now like I do the music that I grew up on. Just yesterday in honor of Marvin Gaye's b-day I was jamming his "Let's Get It On" and "I Want You" cd's back to back and the songs are still special to me. There is no singer of today that could touch my man.

Comment: Musb there is no such thing as a has been era and especially since they still play so much real r&b. Besides that aren't we allowed to have our own opinions about this music? Or do you think we should all feel the same way you do? I haven't liked anything mimi has done for a very long time and with this new single of hers to me it's official - she has regressed. Or better yet - she's doin' the janet - still trying to appeal to the younguns even though she ain't one. All you proved with your second post is that every era has made some silly music and has had some silly artists, nothing more.

Comment: at least with Eddie Murphy and Paula Abdul, i think we had a balance of good music too back in the 80's - i.e. Whitney, EW&F, Aretha, Loose Ends, SOS Band, Stevie Wonder, Sade, Lionel Richie, etc. Hell, some of the thite music was banging in the 80's and we listened to it too. There was waaay more of a balance in music and although some music was suggestive, it sill left a little to the imagination.

Glad you co-signed my idea that all eras make shytty music and not one has the lock on being "real" or "good." It's hard to make 'then and now' comparisons when the number of current artists quintuple-fold the numbers from the past. The "my music was good" line sounds just as stuck as these politicians talking about when Reagan or Kennedy ran for the yt house. Old NEWS!

Comment: I remember having this arguement with my own father. I've been a Prince fan from day 1. My dad thinks Prince is wayyy overrated. He would argue that Prince would never stand the test of time. "He's no Sam Cook". Well look at us now 25 years later Prince is still in the game. Now that I'm older I can appreciate what he was saying about Cook while still having the satisfaction of knowing he was wrong about Prince.

Comment: Will anyone even remember this song? I am not a Mariah Carey fan but for some reason, I always expected more from her. She and her music look and feel 'unlistenable'. And why does every R&B song have to a 'remix' and 'a rapper' collobration?? This is why R&B sucks nowadays. I liked it when R&B/Soul was seperate and Rap did their own thing.

Comment: BRod...No shytty songs nor artists during the 70's? U don't really want me to answer that. My Ding-aLing wasn't the best of the 70's..that's for sure. 'Nas...the era of 3-5-7, Hammer, TLC, Hanson, Cameo..is over. Doesn't mean the music wasn't gud at the time. Meet me at the corner of Stanton and Alabama!..lol Southern..that's my whole point..everybody from every generation always thinks their generation is the best. My mom thinks Prince is Trash...grandma thought the world was coming to an end w/Rick James. Who stands the test of time is an indication of how good or bad someone is. What's the latest Ying Yang song again?

Comment: Being a musician myself, I know that once R & B took traditional instruments out of the music, the downfall started. Back in the 70's, a musician could always have a gig, but once the 80's greed came, slowly and slowly, traditional instruments started to fade away because record companies wanted to make more money, artists wanted to make more money and the musicians were left to fend for themselves. Once the synthesizers came into play, that was the end for musicians. For those who listen to black college bands, do you know that most of the repitoire is music from the 70's? The reason is that today's R & B music has no instrumentation at all. (Watch the movie, "DrumLine") Mariah can really re-invent herself if she was to add some instrmentation to her music. She has got the voice.

Comment: GHank> R&B/Soul has always been the sacrifical lamb when it comes to cutting edge music. I noticed that rock & country music have not 'computerized' their music to the extent that our music has. I put the blame for the lack of instrumentations solely on the music industry because they were looking to cut costs and wanted to find artists who were 'jack of all trades'. The artists have always been at the mercy of the record companies, unless they were heavy hitters like Prince or Michael Jackson. I also think the downfall of R&B came when black artists became 'obsessed' with crossing over to pop once the Thriller phenom(sp?) took over. So you're right about the artists wanting to make money but the industry has always found ways to manipulate the situation to their advantage. And let's not forget the fact that the public school system stopped or rarely funds music programs. I played in the school bands from grade school to high school. There are hardly any music programs where our children can learn an instrument.
