Comment: TAVIS, THAT'S BULLSHYT!!! YOU MUST THINK BLACK FOLKS IS STUPID! Your arse was forced off the airways because of your unrelenting attacks on a certain Mr. Barack Obama. The heat was getting too hot in the kitchen and you chose to bail out. Good luck with your stratospheric platidues and impressive sound bytes. You're still GREEN with envy!!

Comment: I guess we will never really know the truth....but if it wasn't for those twice weekly spots on the TJMS, I am positive that all of those "other" projects wouldn't even be taking place. TJMS made Tavis who he is and put him on the map! Good Luck!

Comment: Tavis Smiley Will Cut Ties With Joyner Radio Show Listeners Have Been Critical of Commentator's Tough Stance on Obama By Paul Farhi Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, April 12, 2008; Page C01 One of Sen. Barack Obama's toughest African American critics is quitting his long association with a national radio show after facing a backlash from the program's listeners. Tavis Smiley said yesterday he will resign in June as a twice-weekly commentator on the syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" after more than 11 years with the program. He cited fatigue and a busy schedule in a personal call to Joyner on Thursday night, but Joyner indicated otherwise on his program and in his blog yesterday, writing: "The real reason is that he can't take the hate he's been getting regarding the Barack issue -- hate from the black people that he loves so much."

Name: TMan
Comment: Smiley has taken on Obama in a series of commentaries that began as the Democrat from Illinois emerged as the party's front-runner for the presidential nomination in early January. Days after Obama's win in the Iowa caucus, Smiley warned on Joyner's show: "Don't fall so madly in love [with Obama] that you surrender your power to hold people accountable. . . . I'm not saying overlook Senator Obama, but you now better be ready to look him over." That commentary brought a hail of critical phone calls and e-mails down on Smiley, who replied two days later on the Joyner show that he stood by his criticism. "It's all about accountability," he said at the time. Since then, amid mounting counter-criticism, Smiley has stepped up his critiques, contending that Obama wasn't sufficiently attentive to issues involving African Americans.

Name: TMan
Comment: He was also critical of Obama's decision not to attend an annual forum, the State of the Black Union, that Smiley hosted in February in New Orleans. Obama's rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, accepted Smiley's invitation to the event. When the Obama campaign offered Michelle Obama, the senator's wife, as a substitute speaker, Smiley said publicly the offer was unacceptable. He also rebuked Obama this month for not traveling to Memphis for the 40th anniversary ceremonies marking the %*$assination of Martin Luther King Jr., and for Obama's decision to distance himself from controversial remarks made by the Obama family's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. Joyner's daily program, heard in the Washington area on WMMJ (102.3 FM), reaches a predominantly African American audience of about 10 million listeners weekly via more than 100 stations. The four-hour show features banter between Joyner and sidekicks, comedy bits, music and news; Smiley is the sole political analyst.

Name: TMan
Comment: Smiley is the author of the best-selling "Covenant With Black America" and hosts self-named interview shows on PBS and Public Radio International. He formerly hosted a show on Black Entertainment Television in Washington. Late yesterday afternoon, Smiley said in a statement that he would stay with Joyner until the end of June, adding: "Contrary to what has been suggested, I have decided to clear some things off my plate so that I can devote my time and attention to some exciting and empowering projects." He did not mention Obama. Roland Martin, a CNN political contributor who hosts a talk-radio show aimed at African Americans in Chicago, said by phone that he was "very surprised" by Smiley's resignation. "You have to expect to get heat the moment you decide to offer critical comments about politics or social issues," Martin said. "You have to be tough enough to take it."

Name: TMan
Comment: Added Martin: "For a long time, Tavis was used to people applauding him for taking tough stances. . . . This was the first time he had taken a position that flat-out ticked off his core audience. But [criticism] comes with the territory." On the Huffington Post Web site yesterday, author and political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson suggested that Smiley was the victim of "the black Obama thought police," which had subjected him to "a verbal public lynching" for comments that ran counter to mainstream black opinion. --- article ends.

Name: Quanli
Comment: Good riddance. While I strongly disagree with his positions and question is sincerity in general, he did not bother me enough to think he needed to quit his spot. By all means, if Pat B and Bill O and whoever else can talk trash then I think Tavis had every right to do the same. But true to form, that was not enough for Tavis. No, because he also needs praise. Praise for educating the misguided dark folk. Emails propping him up for his "leadership" and "love" for us. GTFOOH. He wants to no part of being called out, but hubris always leads to destruction.

Name: kwrob
Comment: Tavis might want to run that commitment by Tom then, because as far as Tom was concerned Friday, Smiley's resignation was effective immediately. But Tom is also talking out of both sides of his neck. First he says how much he loves Tavis and how he wants Tavis back on the show. Then he calls out to Huggy Lowdown to make Tavis a Bama of the week, which Huggy obliges.

Name: Taurusingr
Comment: I wouldn't be surprised if "Tavis the tom"!!, gets ( in the voice of a slave)... "a big ole shiny new gig", out of this Obama attacking & severing ties with our community!! Yall know that's one of the things YT does best....stealing,making & rewarding....House "N's"!!! One!!

Name: Kensbroh
Comment: WOW!! Such hate from the misguided & the ignorant, especially from the above comment! Out of all the things he has done over the years, this one issue wipes it all away & makes him a "Sell-Out Tom". But then again, with all the bitterness that comes from a good bit of the women on this board(and some dudes), it's a wonder why nobody else gives a good goddamn!

Name: fanteeking
Comment: Kensbroh: "Out of all the things he has done over the years" R U kiddin'? He has held conferences, written books and has said provocative revolutionary statements on CNN, but after all was said and done, he's stabbing the potential, FIRST BLACK (Sorry Bill) PRESIDENT in the back. What if your fellow African villager helped you harvest the crops, construct your house, educate your children and worshipped your Diety and THEN one day he meets Portuguese or Dutch or British slavemongers and directs them to your house and helps them put you in chains and marches you to the Cape Coast slave ships. The villager MAY have done honorable things in the past BUT his final deed sold you across the ocean. THINK ABOUT IT!! Tavis has done some great things for Africa-America but now he's rattling slave chains.

Comment: IMO you half to be a dumb self centered A$$ to put down the only opportunity of a black prez when you yourself are black. Ok let's say Obama was everything Tavis said he was. It would mean great progress for our people for the greater good to have a black president. He is unwise in knowing that Hilary is no good and I take his stance as this. If you don't kiss my a#@ and come through me then your not worthy to be our president...... Dumb A$$!

Name: Cappaucino
Comment: Closing Statement Jive Turkey, Crab A$$ Ni^^a Syndrome....

Name: MelodyCool
Comment: People will find out much to late that Obama is not for black folks! You keep overlooking every slight from this man and you'll continue to do so "IF" he is elected President (which we know he won't). Even Baraka has said if we don't ask for anything, Obama won't do anything for his black constituency. Some of you act like that man is God. Just wait til you really find him out. It's shameful the way some of you have reacted to Tavis, and I'm no fan of his either but agree with him on Obama. Folks are behaving like dumb lemmings!!!
