Comment: Well everybody know the media blows things out of control!

Name: blaquebaby
Comment: I want to hear the recorded the reporter used when she interviewed Keys thats the only way we will know the truth!

Name: JGGIRL
Comment: She made absolutely no sense on Tom Joyner yesterday. Never did directly answer any questions.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Go LiLi! She's right though - everything she has done, the charity shows, her foundation and her connection to young black girls is always relegated to a small blurb under 'other news'. She also explained her necklace but I don't see that explanation here either.

Name: bigfriend
Comment: rriiiggghhttt. Aren't people always "misinterpreted" when thier comments are taken negatively? When will people just say something and stick by thier words! People always backing out after they say something!

Name: bigfriend
Comment: McNasty> you should know by now that news is never the good stuff, only the bad stuff in papers , tv, whatever. and BTW on MSN she said people gave her the nickname AK47 some crap about killing them onstage or something.

Name: yunvme
Comment: Why would she be concerned with whether or not her charitable contributions are "small blurbs" or not? See that is the problem with these fake azz celebs. They do things for the publicity. I dig people who do charity work and donate money and time off the radar screen. They dont feel the need to announce it, the just do it.

Name: Train
Comment: She knew exactly what she was saying. It's just when white folks get crazy over her remarks that she's back peddling on her commnets.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Bigfriend I know - but that was omitted from this article which was 'meant' to clarify - good news is no news in all forms of media. Besides that if you listened to the 'interview' Tom 'coonin' Joyner talked over her so much it was ridiculous.

Name: bigfriend
Comment: Train> lets not forget it goes both ways - just like when black folk get crazy over remarks do white people start backpeddling on them.

Comment: What churns my butter about this is mix-breeds who don't know which race they want to embrace and when they do decide to embrace black culture, they need to make reference to injustices. The ONLY reason I like this girl is because Clive Davis, a white-man that capitalize off of black talent, shoved her down my throat. We embraced Alicia to water-down Beyonce, applauded the way that she tickle the ivory and her overall growth in the industry. My point is, pick better battles, make your music and stop bringing up ole' stuff, we can't control. Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield were all radicals, who expressed their political views through song. They died sad and sick. Think hard before getting political. If you get too out-of-hand, I betcha Clive won't support you

Comment: I co-sign with JGGIRL. I just listened to the interview on YouTube, and although she's a VERY talented, beautiful singer, musician and lousy actress, she ain't no radical a la Angela Davis or %*$ata Shakur. This reminds me of the Will Smith "Hitler" debacle. When will these celebrities learn to stop being such publicity hogs that they are at the mercy of an unscrupulous media because their comments are not well thought out. They think by "speaking out" that it makes them look intelligent. It does NOT. The very ones who do this "speaking out" may be rich and "successful," but they aren't even college educated. Without a higher education, they can't possibly know what can be made of the words they BLURT out. This is how it all started with Michael Jackson and Martin Bashir. Celebs, either have your publicists do your talking for you at these "interviews," or STFU, please?

Comment: Wow@Capricorn_queen. (Queeniebunz, where ARE you today, girl?!)

Comment: Capricorn_queen, with all due respect why should mixed-race children have to embrace ONE race? I never understood that. IMO, if they do have to pick one, let it be the HUMAN race. But why should they have to pick one ethnicity when they're more than one. Can they not embrace both/all? <> Whether Keys said it or not, she's entitled to her opinion. Can't please all the people all of the time. However, I feel those of us who expect the gov't to give a crap about us really need to stop.

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: @ JGGirl, I heard her also on TJMS and you can tell by her reponses that her denial of her previous statements was forced. She meant what she said the first time. Tom suggesstion that the media may try to find a way to associate what she said to Obama may be the reason for the recant. As a result, I'm glad she agreed to take back the statement, at least publically. But, like you said none or her responses to Tom made any sense. She was literally talking in circles. "I said it but I didn't say it". I detect a blossoming radical in Alicia *tearing up* She's making me proud.

Comment: Grace: So I wasn't the only one scrollin' for Queenie when I read Capricorn's post, huh?

Comment: At one time all we had was our music to use as a venue to get political. Ever since we landed here we've been expressing ourselves through music. Earlier on it was Negroe Spirituals. Through the voices of Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, James Brown and others we were motivated to stand up against oppression. Public Enemy told us to "Fight the Power". Alicia is a young voice and the product of the hip hop generation. She's enlightened enough to know that we're still in a struggle. Some voice of reason is hipping her to the fact that many times over we, as black folks, have been subjected to many conspiracies. Since slavery there's been the syphilis experiments, drugged out communities and etc. Some would like to make us believe that all of these occurences were figments of our imagination. I don't know if what she stated about hip hop is factual but it only takes one enlighted person to make it known to others and then we start to question it. At the very least, her comments warrant further discussion. *Stepping off soapbox*

Comment: >Grace - I just read it - my job actually had me working this morning! Go figure...as for that comment - well, it doesn't ever surprise me. The same mean lil black girls who taunted me and told me my hair wasn't real because I could sit on my ponytails, and the same mean lil black girls who actually had pulled me into the woods to cut my hair off to prove it wasn't real and the same mean lil black girls who told me I only had long hair cuz my mama was white, and the same mean lil black girls who called me a zebra constantly thru elementary school are now mean grown up black women with the same insecurities and jealousies. People don't change much, particularly when it comes to prejudices and playground antics. If you work in an office and there's a mean and nasty gossip who likes to start trouble on the job, chances are she was that mean girl on the playground who instigated fights and bullied girls to pump herself up because she was insecure and didn't like herself very much. To say something as nasty as this person just said is just why I grew up being afraid of mean lil black girls. I actually work with a mean nasty black woman who hates me and treats me poorly because she's mad that her brothers-in-law all married white women and she knows my ma is white. So, no this doesn't surprise me. It's just what it is.

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: >katgrrrl and Grace - there you have it. I'll say also that what the person above said is exactly why girls like Keys overcompensate to try and "be black enough" by using unnecessary slang and acting all 'yo'. My lil bro and I had a big discussion (argument) where I told him that as a person of mixed race you have to choose at some point in this society what you are or society will decide for you. He said he could straddle the fence and just "be" but he learned fast that society will choose for you when he got all the sh*t black men in America get - followed by the police, antagonized by other black men, etc. We don't look white at all so we couldn't "pass for white" even if we wanted to, which we don't. We are both pretty militant about race issues and see the world thru "black eyes". We've been out with our ma and had sales people run all up on her, and ignore our existence. We've been out with her and had salespeople follow us around the store like we stole something and our ma was appalled. We'd been trying to tell her for years that it happened but she had her rosy glasses on and refused to believe her fellow white people would treat us like that. We told her, "now do you get it that you are white and we are not?" So believe it - we go thru the same sh*t as any other black people do. And we didn't even steal something in the store that day! We took it the week before! And we put it in ma's bag! ;)

Comment: Of all the things to be misinterpreted about the; "West/East coast rivalry is something she would have been better off saying "No Comment"! Now, all the GREAT things this woman has done will be marred do to the media's take on stretching the truth. It was just a few months ago they attacked Will Smith's characther.Once again, these celebrities have exorbitant amounts of money and yet that fail to purchase a $25.00 recorder when being interviewed? If you can go out and purchase a $3000.00 Prado bag to pose for the camera's you should not be crying when the media makes things up about you - nothing wrong with being guarded, if you are prepared! Alicia, has been in the game long enough to know this - especially with rumors floating she's a dyke? Use your head babygirl- keep the press at bay or better yet, have that "backup plan to support your claim"! Nuff said!

Name: blackdragon
Comment: First of all, Capricorn_queen is stupid. As for Alicia Keys, your comments were not misinterpreted. You caught heat for your dumb comments, and now you want to backpedal. As bigfriend typed, people should stick to their words. Either get a publicist to speak for you, or shut up. Also, Ms. Keys, will you never be like Angela Davis or Nina Simone. And her comment about not getting media attention for doing good things proves that most celebrities don't care about the poor. They do this for attention. If they really cared about less fortunate people, they wouldn't seek attention or announce it to the world. They would just do it without the media attention. So, Alicia Keys (along with other celebrities) is a phony when it comes to doing good for others.

Name: McNasty
Comment: WE? I like Alicia for Alicia - the girl is talented, can sing and isn't slinging her nekkid as.s at me every time I see a video. Identify with one race? she'a biracial and if she is just now finding her militant side - step back and let her find it. We make excuses to keep watching flavor of love and excuses for some terribvle black behavior and when this child stumbles jump all over her like she kicked your cat/dog. Damn!

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: I completely disagree that Keys only does charity work for the attention. I think she's a fantastic role model and a very caring woman who cares about this world. She travels the world and almost burned herself out doing all that she does. I think she sounded naive and disillusioned when she made the statement about only getting attention for saying something not so well thought out. It is true. In this world, we love to build people up and then tear them down and then dance all over their "grave" so to speak. Then we rejoice in their "come back" (Mariah Carey, etc.) I am sure she has learned from this to be very careful what she says. I like her a lot. As McNasty said, she keeps her clothes on, she doesn't trip off being "thick" and not a skinny toothpick. She makes beautiful, soulful music that people of all ages and cultures listen to. Any time you can hear an Alicia Keys song on the radio in DC on the hip hop stations (93WKYS & 95PGC), grown folks music (96WHUR & 102.3) and on the hip hop/pop station (HOT 99.5) she is doing something! So yeah, I wearing anything around your neck about a gun, even if it's a private joke is a lil off and yeah I think she spoke about something she really didn't know but so much about but cut the girl some slack. She's doin the d*amn thing!

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: Blackdragon comment: "First of all, Capricorn_queen is stupid." LOL! So simple and to the point. Love it. <> Queenie, stay strong sis. Those "same mean lil black girls" are issue-ridden and mad at EVERYBODY, lol. "And we didn't even steal something in the store that day! We took it the week before! And we put it in ma's bag! ;)" Hahahahaaa!

Comment: I don't agree with all Capricorn_queen posted but there are some things she did say that I agree with. Alicia Keyes (for all her talent) was shoved down our throats and she was NEVER a part of any hip hop generation. I remember getting the promo of her first project and was told it was to be a PRIORITY...meaning all the stops were to be pulled out mutually between the record company and music publishing. Personally it sounded like Irene Cara to me but I also felt that as she had more expereinces her lyrics and music would be reflective of that. Wasn't really impressed with any of her releases but I will say that her recent release shows tremendous growth from the others (as I orignally thought). If you notice her marketing (and her tour) she's moving toward mainstream pop. Gee I wonder why? Can it be perhaps that by her opening act choices the demographic of her tour audience will change (definitely)...Jordan Sparks and Ryan (I can't even remember dudes last name) but there is nothing about that tour that say's hip hop generation or R&B...and how many of yall are going?

Name: Teigh
Comment: what I also keep in mind about Alicia is that she is like any woman that age...becoming more comfortable in her own skin and growing. Her racial make up doesn't amtter to me -- it's irrelevant but what I do feel strongly about is that there are many other artists who if given one tenth of the promotional push that Alicia was given would be just as successful. If her first album was released with no push and no Clive -- sorry it would not have done as well as it did. Now for her comments, I was quite surprised how they made the evening news the day they were released...and she had to know Blender was going to push the envelope on that one...but you can best believe (as someone posted earlier) that Clive called her into the office and read girlfriend the RIOT ACT -- there is too much money involved and already set up to alienate that pop audience (NOT US) he is positioning her for. I'm curious to see how this is going to play out. How much artistic freedom does she really want? or will she shut up and let the machine work.

Comment: Queeniebunz.... got fist in air doing the black women head roll saying I know that's right you my girl I don't care what color yo mama iz lol lol don't understand why so many people are bashing this woman,... so what if she did say it.. she is entitled to speak her opinion, if that is how she feels and what she thinks then.. so what the real shame is she feels she has to explain and then backpeddle. freedom is not free I will still buy her cds I wish there was more talk of all the good that people are doing in our community all thats is talked about is how many are killed with guns

Name: Teigh
Comment: And queeniebunz...your reflections on how mean lil black girls can be is classic. I'm going to cut and paste this and share it with my neices. While it's unfortunate that it happened to you...the lesson about character can be applied across all racial and ethnic lines.

Name: DOne
Comment: We always conplain that today's artists care only about the dollar and have no type of social consciousness. Instead of critizing her, someone should pull her aside and school her, not throw her under the bus. It means she's at least attempting to think critical about how things impact the black community.

Name: Closet_Nerd_Girl
Comment: >Queenie- LOVE your rant about lil mean black girls!!!!! I caught the same type of harrassment growing up, except I was TOO "black" for their tastes. We can't win for losing. We can ge our own worst enemy.

Name: Closet_Nerd_Girl
Comment: >DOne, I'm with you on this one. I'll give Alicia a pass on this because she's young and, as far as I know, this is the first time she's publicly said something stupid. This is not a pattern for her. She'll learn from this and move on to do better next time.

Name: Teigh
Comment: Honestly WE didn't throw Alicia under the bus...BLENDER did. And Alicia backpeddled on her statements (allegedly on her own but I don't believe that). Alicia is not stupid, she graduated top of her class from the HS of Performing Arts (the school that Fame was based on) here in NYC. There were loads of industry folks who knew about her long before Clive bought her out of that sony deal she got tied up in. Sony wanted to give her "formula radio friendly music" (kind of like that new Mariah CD) so she sat. And she had a publishing deal before the sony deal so the industry believed in her songwriting abilites before she got a recording deal. Clive allows her to create her own records however she is very much tied into the American Idol pop machine...when it comes to how they promote her her current tour screams American Idol demographic -- not the "soul singer" she was marketed as. And with regard to her statements, I don't think it's the black community that industry folks are concerned about. Her statements have the potential for mainstream society to deem her too radical, and she played into that alleged fear by backpeddling. If she felt that way she should have stood by her statements -- just as Blender magazine did.

Name: Grace12_34
Comment: Teigh, Alicia Keys did graduate at the top of her class, with a full scholarship to attend Columbia University, but she didn't attend the HS of Performing Arts. She attended and graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School in Hell's Kitchen.

Comment: >CNG - I hope I didn't seem as angry as "rant" indicates. I was just telling what happened. I'm not mad about it. Even then I wasn't mad about it. I was more hurt than anything. At that age you want to be accepted and not dogged out by your own because they perceive you as "different". When I've talked to other women about my treatment on the playground, they say similar things to what you said - light vs. dark, fat vs. skinny, tall vs. short, etc. Little girls are vicious lil people, especially when they're taught to be that way by their "former mean girl" mothers. I played with the boys and was a kickball superstar when I was younger and left the girls to their jumping rope and name calling. I wasn't that good at double dutch anyhow. Little boys don't care how long your hair is except so they can pull it. Little boys don't care if you're wearing the correct designer clothes as long as you can catch the kickball, throw the kickball, or run like hell after kicking the kickball! So I was happy being a tomboy (not to be confused w/carpet muncher). The only problem w/being a tomboy is that the boy you have a crush on doesn't really like the little girl who can run faster than him and gets picked before him in kickball...You just can't win on the playground! ;)

Comment: Teigh I was going to the AK show and got on line to get the tickets - needless to say I will move heaven and earth for some of my favorite artists but to pay a hundred for each ticket - aw heyell nawl! I'm didn't pay that much for Jaheim and I'll be seeing him in May. I never paid that much for Ms. Patti and when I went to see Prince a few years back I damn sure didn't pay that. I gotta give her a few years of being around before she's worth that kind money.

Name: Grace12_34
Comment: Wow! McNasty, was that recently?

Name: Closet_Nerd_Girl
Comment: >Queenie- ;-)

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: Queenie, you answered my question before I even asked it. When you said the thing about bein' dogged out by your own, I was gonna ask if it was ALL blacks or just the females. Ya went on to say that you were cool with the boys. That's what I thought n' that's prolly why some of them girls were mad at ya. You were gettin' that attention from the boys that THEY wanted. Then you have some grown women today who are feel that all black men want white women. So to those women, the closer you are and/or more you have in common with white women (i.e. long hair, light skin), the more of a threat you are to them. Anywho, you're right. It's just some ol' stank insecurity & jealousy.

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: >McNasty - Good luck w/that. Tickets are high, period and they're only gonna get worse. I haven't been to a concert in so long I can't even remember the last one just for that reason. I can hear ya just fine on my Ipod or on the radio. No, actually I went to the Sugar Water Tour in '05 and got a $55 lawn seat at Meriweather Post to see Jill, Erykah, Queen, and Floetry = OFF THE HOOK to see them all for that much and to see them chillin' in my fancy lawn chair w/the foot rest = all good!
