Comment: Barack Obama was 5 or 6 years old when MLK was %*$assinated, so of course he doesn't come from the same experience as Jesse. Does that make him a bad person, or not an authentic Black man? And aren't we past the point where are "leaders" have to be "Rev." or "Rev. Dr. Somebody"?

Comment: "But even more galling than the notion that he hasn’t paid his civil rights dues, is that he also talks about being multi-racial. This sent up the red flag that Obama’s adherence and allegiance to blackness is deeply suspect." People like Obama should be deeply suspect.

Comment: Black people in America make up 13% of the population. Obama cannot run on a platform that focuses soley on our issues. It's a losing proposition. Growing up Obama did not have the same experience as a lot of Blacks in this country but it doesn't not mean he didn't experience racism. Should he be expected to speak out against injustice? Absolutely! However, he cannot do it as a victim. He has to do it as a righter of wrongs. He walks a political tightrope that whites get to avoid all together.

Comment: MelodyCool,
Don't be stupid. Obama is multi-racial, or haven't you noticed that his mama is White, as well as his grandmother. Is he just supposed to deny that fact publicly because he looks more Black than he does White? Technically, like comedian Gary Owen said in a concert last week, we Black people can't be the only race that claims him; we can't have him to ourselves. This is the same criticism most of us have of Tiger Woods, even though he's not 100% Black. Really most of us aren't when you look at it. And it's especially true if you have some White ancestors inyour family, particularly if they are as close as being your mother or father.

Comment: Jesse and the old guard for whom he speaks are using a Rovian whisper campaign to bamboozle black folks . . . . the old guard has not been invited to the O-BA-MA!! campaign's inner circle and they shouldn't be in the inner circle because they do not believe that we are the change that we have been waiting for and they do not believe in transparent goverment . . . . . the old guard believes only in itself and its survival by any means necessary

Comment: kwrob, you are right that most US citizens are not 100% of any ethnic backgroun . . . . . most US citizens have DNA showing mixtures of blacks, whites, asians, etc. . . . . we claim ethnic standing based upon appearance and sometimes, acculturation/socialization, never DNA . . . . . melodycool [she is not alone!] conveniently overlooks the scientific fact that DNA shows most of us are bi-racial or more likely, multi-racial

Comment: How many years until Obama is considered an insider and an old guard? What will we do with him then? Will we throw Obama under the bus for the new flava of the month?

Comment: Yunvme That depends on Obama himself and a number of factors, like will society work on change for the better-with O? Will O stay true to himself and his message of change or will he get old and tired and set in his ways like the so-called leaders of the past seem to be? Not ready to view the world of today with a new lens and change their viewpoints and action plans accordingly. Your boy KRS 1 said it best: Let Old ideas die with old education. If Obama starts sticking like a needle on an old broken record-then yes he will be discarded.
Somehow, I doubt that will be the case with him. He is seen as a change-maker-leader of a new way of thought and action. So hopefully like fine wine, he will improve with time, and we will as a Society, as well.

Comment: HarrisThomas, I'm not overlooking anything. Go on an mixed raced site and they will deride black folks for mentioninig the fact that many AAs have white blood (and Indian) in our distant "past". They are very covetous of their "recent" white blood admixture. "RECENT" is the operative factor here. Meaning 1 white parent (preferably their mother) and 1 black parent. I dare you to bring up being biracial to someone who is the product of the mix I just mentioned. These folks can't stand blacks.

Comment: yunvme, good question. This is exactly why others do not step up to lend a hand...they know how fickle blacks can be anytime they can treat JJ and Sharpton the way they have...all to delight whites I'm sure. Yet whites never toss their's under the bus...Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms are excellent examples.

Comment: @ Earl: "Obama doesn’t look, talk, or act like a black leader or civil rights activist should look, talk and act." My question is how is it that a civil rights activist SHOULD LOOK? And where in Obama's resume did he SAY that he was a "civil rights leader?" I'll answer my rhetorical question, Obama has not said this. What he SAID and WROTE about in his books is that he was a "community organizer." And even if you equate this to "civil rights activist" what handbook of civil rights activism says that you have to be a certain brand of phony, double-talking, %*$!ed off person with the additional title of "Reverend?" Typical Earl... Typical stupidity. Typical out of touch, irrelevant dinosaur.

Comment: Earl, you said "But even more galling than the notion that he hasn’t paid his civil rights dues, is that he also talks about being multi-racial." I know this might should like a newsflash to you and that coo coo for coco puffs MelodyCool, but BARACK OBAMA IS MULTIRACIAL. It's a fact. And all this nonsense dribble from MelodyCool about interracial sites is totally off the wall, unless Barack Obama is one of those people on the interracial sites talking about Black people. I know that it may sound surprising to you Earl (and Melody Cool), but Barack Obama is running for President of the United States, not Black Activist of the Century. Ya'll are tiring me with your nonesense.
