Comment: I honestly couldn't care less about this, lol. It seems EUR has a lot of Obama news items today, but I missed what I think is the most important one--that RACIST, egregious, possibly momentum-killing cover on the New Yorker. It is abominable and brings up just the kind of innuendo the Obama camp thought was behind them. This is deplorable.

Comment: morteen javonnnnee, youre up mighty early... TGen i agree..i am %*$!ed at that blatently racist cover on the new yorker magazine...im sure who ever is behind it was/is a hillary clinton supporter. i will await a response other than they didnt mean to offend anyone. it the latest craze, like when sports illustrated ran the front cover with the noose on it. and yes, good look for obama to drop nascar, he must have gotten the word of the sister being discriminated against by nascar and filing the law suit.

Comment: ...and why is cynthia mckinney throwing her hat into the green party as president, where do these steppin fetchet negros come from? why do they not get behind barack. it has GOT to be self hatred at this point. there is no other excuse.

Name: TGen
Comment: Huey, the response from the artist of that trash claims he was being satirical and trying to show how ridiculous all the rumors are. But he managed--and I HAVE to believe intentionally--to do just the opposite. There is no way the publishers could have looked at that damn cover and not known it would be offensive. They think we are fools I guess. On McKinney, I don't know if it's "self-hatred" in her case, more like self-importance. Some politician only know how to be a politician, lol. Once they get one feel for that power, it's hard for them to let it go, so they keep running for any and everything they can, trying to stay relevant. I didn't live in her district, but I think she got shafted. I didn't agree with all her tactics, but I think she provided a needed voice of dissent to Bushie and crew in an era when just about EVERYONE else was giving them everything they wanted on a silver platter. If nothing else, you knew Cynthia was going to give em hell! lol I hope she finds a place of relevance again...

Comment: TGen --i concur, new yorker knew that magazine cover would evoke emotion from a distance without one ever having to pick the book up and flip through it. they knew it would send a subliminal message.

Comment: In other news....[A group of men calling themselves 'AmeriCan' want Jackson to step down from his position with the Rainbow Push Coalition. Jackson later said he thought the controversy had helped the Obama campaign. "He didn't receive any pain, I felt the pain and the embarrassment and the hurt," said Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition. "You can't tell me that Jesse Jackson has been in the media for over 40 years, that when somebody hooks a mic up to him, that he don't realize that it's live," said Harold Davis, AmeriCan. Comment: The New Yorker cover has left me breathless. This level of racism hasn't been around since before I was born. Got to go back at least 60 years on this one. When was the last lynching of Black people in this county? Well the New Yorker, under the guise of satire, just lynched Barack and Michele on their cover.

Wow, Is Michelle the Foxy Brown type character and Barack the sneaky, conniving Muslim dressed in full Obsama Bin Laden wear trying to fool the heartland? Those folk at the NewYorker are brave with the subliminal messages being seen all over the world with this racist jib. Will Barack condemn this fear mongering openly, or will he finally tell the larger society to cool it with the race hate already. Please call these people on this blatant race bating politics. Just Wow!!!I am almost shocked,I said almost!

Comment: Huey: For 12 dayum years, I lived across the street from the 500 race track here in Naptown. Those NASCAR folks are some of the most RACIST SOBs in the world. They get a couple of beers under their belts and get a crowd of 10 people in their car and wanna ride past my house and call me the "Magic Word". I'm 6'6, 260 so they wouldn't dare come to me ONE on ONE. I Obama don't need to be involved with those racist peckerwoods. As for Cynthia McKinney, I think she's one french fry short of a HAPPY MEAL. She has those wide crazy eyes and I think the lighthouse man inside her skull has gone on vacation. Like Jesse, she jist be missin' the limelight.

Comment: The New Yorker's Image of Obama was meant to show how ignorant the idea that the Obama's are radical/Black (blow-up America) Muslims. The image is satire amd if you read the article called The Politics Of Fear, it makes sense. Yes, there are some who will not bother to read the article and will be offended or reinforce their prejudice. The New Yorker (with Seymor Hersch) helped me see the real reason why America is in Iraq....OIL, early on.

Name: TGen
Comment: It doesn't matter what the article said Soulmusic101. Newspeople understand more than anyone how important headlines are. That cover picture is their headline and knowing that most (esp those it's directed toward) WON'T read that article, it was either highly irresponsible or sneakily incendiary (which I think) for them to run with that cover. That cartoon is something to be reserved for the editorial page, NOT the cover a magazine. Don't give them an out on this. They opened up a can of worms people thought had finally began to close. Now Obama (and all Blacks really) have to backpedal and try to convince [White] people again that they're not out to harm them or "their" country. Shame on the New Yorker for opening up this sore yet again. Will we EVER get past this ish? Dang

Comment: >dcdouglass01 - The last "official" lynching that I can think of was in 1999 when James Byrd was walking down the street in Texas and a group of spam-suckin trailer trash peckerwood crackers beat him up, and then dragged him to death by attaching him to the back of their truck til his body literally fell apart. Oh, but wait. There was just another lynching at the end of June here in PG Co, Md. A 19 yr old man - Ronnie White was arrested for allegedly killing a cop. 2 days later, he was found strangled in his maximum security cell at the PG Co Jail. The guards - nobody saw nuthin', no camerals and the guards refused to talk. The NAACP is working on it and the feds are investigating but we'll see. No, he wasn't dragged out of his cell and strung up like they used to do back in the day, but he was defenselessly strangled, just not from a tree. Funny thing - he was probably guilty but he wasn't given his due process = a lynching. I am sure there are other cases as egregious as this one between 1999 and 2008. Lynching isn't going to stop. As long as whites are racist, they'll kill us just because and get away with it as the guards at the PG Co jail will and as the racist PG Co cops have been for decades. And yeah, Obama is gonna get The New Yorker Magazine and worse. I think that's why Michelle didn't want him to run. It has to be scary for them, especially thinking about their children. I hope they and their children buy bullet proof suits. I hope they walk around like astronauts, so protected we can't even see them! I'll be praying for them every day as I have been. This country is nuts.

The New Yorker will benefit(?) from repug 527 groups using the cover for negative campaigning against O-BA-MA!! . . . . . yep, that's real funny, ain't it?

Name: soulmusic101
Comment: TGen...I hear your view. I still wasn't offended because I know that Michelle is not the 2009 version of Angela Davis. But I understand if you and others were. Oh I also don't hate Ms McKinney for running with The Green Party and I respect her for early on being agaist Bush/Cheney's grab for OIL in Iraq. She received death threats for her views for speaking truth to Power.

Comment: I've already heard the sniveling excuses from the New Yorker. There is no way they couldn't know that that cover was racist as all get out. And they know good and well that many will see that cover as some sort of 'revealation'. Meaning they had 'heard' he was a Muslin and now that cover will prove that they were right. Has the New Yorker ever drawn a cover with George W. Bush lobbying endless beer cans into a trashcan from his desk in the oval office? Have they ever put McCain on the cover shaking hands with the Grim Reaper? Or worse yet, showed McCain sitting in the Oval Office, going through some sort of traumatic flashback as his time as a POW, with his finger poised over the nuke button? And let's talk about Mrs. Clinton's covers...none showing her walking into a bedroom to catch her husband and some tramp in bed, hey? Unless we see some covers like that, I wouldn't be stupid enough to buy that that cover is nothing but 'satire'.

Comment: I peeped the NewYorker cover on line. *smh* I wonder if any other political figure has been featured on their cover in such a "satirical" manner... Anywho, this reminds me of when TIME magazine put OJ on the cover and "darkened" the picture to make him look "sinister." This is a prime example of the media building you up just to tear you down. With the exception of the Rev. Wright debacle (and Fuax News, because face it, they are not a real news outlet...), the MSM has been pretty light on Obama and not looking at him to closely or giving him to much scrutiny. But since he's clinched the nomination, they are starting to come out of their bag. Kind of makes you go "Hmmmmm...." Comment: WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's campaign says a satirical New Yorker magazine cover showing the Democratic presidential candidate dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist is "tasteless and offensive." ADVERTISEMENT The illustration on the issue that hits newsstands Monday, titled "The Politics of Fear" and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Barack Obama wearing traditional Muslim garb — sandals, robe and turban — and his wife, Michelle — dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an %*$ault rifle strapped over her shoulder — standing in the Oval Office. The couple is doing a fist tap in front of a fireplace in which an American flag is burning. Over the mantle hangs a portrait of Osama bin Laden. "The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree." In a statement Monday, the magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are."

Name: bigchassie
Comment: The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," the New Yorker statement said. The statement also pointed to the two articles on Obama contained inside the magazine, calling them "very serious." Republican John McCain's campaign spokesman, Tucker Bonds, agreed that the cover was "tasteless and offensive." Already the cover was generating controversy on the Internet. The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: "Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism — well, here's your image." ___

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: naw, it ain't so, soul, there is no such thing as "your MSM" with regard to me . . . . . anybody who reads my posts on various EUR boards know that I have major problems with MSM . . . . . last week, McCain was asked about a report that the US exported $158 million worth of cigarettes to Iran during the Dubya presidency despite Dubya aministration restrictions on Iran/US imports: McCain is reported as saying maybe it's a way to kill Iranians . . . . . . hello, out there in MSM-land, are y'all really providing us with full coverage of McCain's comments or blowing them off 'cause you know he's borderline incapacitated? . . . . . meanwhile, there was a MSM dustup this weekend because TV One said that it is providing extensive coverage of everything Barack, including the dems' convention but not the repugs' convention because Barack is historical and that TV One is not a news outlet that has to provide equal time to repugs convention coverage (maybe that will change if the repugs decide to have a black veep)

But today, Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe sends out a message to supporters warning of Republican dominance. The Republicans are dancing with big-money Lobbyists and out raising Obama's Camp, while O has to worry about trivial things. BTW, Is Bill Clinton still pouting? Comment: The racism in this country has not changed one bit. It has simply modernized with the times with the generations. Everyday, Obama and his wife and us as a people have to deal with racist everything. Nothing in that New Yorker magazine cover defines who Obama and his wife really are, two ivy league school trained attorneys, a wonderful tax paying family, but yet it all comes down to they're just n@iggas. To make it even worse, we have those who "claim" they've fought so hard for our civil rights but yet are racist too. What are we to do? We destroy each other whether its with words or violence. We don't want to educate ourselves, we don't want to financially support ourselves. The black community is like one big breast. Everybody comes in and nurses off of it and moves on. How many Koreans do you see donate money to HBC's? How can you honestly buy hair products from somebody who knows nothing about you? How many banks offer fair home and car loans? The black community could do so much more if we would eliminate the divide and conquer mentality that has destroyed us as a people! I'm so tired and I have accepted no matter what laws are passed, what year we're in, we are reminded every single day, n@iggas have no place here!

Comment: Some are saying this is the New Yorker's way of sabotaging Obama's campaign because the extreme left is not happy with his recent baby steps toward the center (endorsement of some of Bush's faith-based initiatives; admission that it may take as long as 18 months [as opposed to two days] to extract troops from Iraq, etc.). But there's more going on than just that, because the left has only two choices in Nov (Hillary lost...get over it), and they'd all of sudden prefer McCain over Obama? I hope the world is watching this, because they thought, with Obama's historic nomination, America was demonstrating that it had finally achieved King's dream of accessing someone based on the content of their character instead of the color of their skin. But this ugly scene that is unfolding before us is a reminder of how little progress we've made. And it's only going to get worse. My prayers to Obama and his family. And after all of this is over, we'll need to recalibrate and decide on an appropriate course of action in our community (which definitely, for me, won't include automatic support of the Democratic party; I'll simply not vote before supporting a party that expects nothing but Step-n-Fetchit behaviour).

Comment: you are damned if you do an ddamed if you don't as a black person in america. if you get out of the hood and make something out of your life and don't fall in with the hood mentality you're called uppity and bourjois by black people. but if you walk around with your underwear showing with all your kids in strollers with a onesie, and a pamper and no shoes you are worthless trash by white people.ll we can do as a people is just be our individual selves. sometimes you can't even deal with lack people. we are harder on ourselves than we are on white people yet we complain about the unfairness of it all. change the idea of hating on your own and turn it into trying to make changes.

Comment: we are starting to complain way to much. USA, racism, it all goes together and now some want to act like all this was behind us? Why cause Obama made a speech about it? LMAO. If we as supporters and Barack as a candidate dont stop with the complaining and acting like a little kid in a grown up world, then we really dont have a chance.

Name: soulmusic101
Comment: HarrisThomas...Are you talking about the John McLaughlin show where he spoke about some Blacks (like Jesse Jackson) looking at Obama like he is an Oreo? Quiet as it is kept some Black and White ppl do feel that way.

Name: javone77
Comment: yunvme: you're right. that's one thing I like about Barack. he sits back and watches everyone else make a big deal out of stuff and when he is asked his own personal response is to downplay it and keep it moving. I am with that. everyone of us knew what was about to happen. now the time has come.

Comment: anyone ever eaten an oreo and drank orange juice afterwards? what a lethal combination....

Name: yunvme
Comment: I will say this. Supporters must stay strong. Remember this. Hillary SUSPENDED her campaign. If enough "people" are turned off towards Obama, there is no guarantee that the super delagates have to cast a vote for him. I believe votes can still be cast for Hillary. This is an important couple of weeks coming up.

Name: javone77
Comment: huey: where the hell did that come from? lol to answer you...a) I HATE oreo cookies. too much damn chocolate. why not just inject sugar right into your bloodstream? LOL 2.) I am allergic to oranges so no I have never done that lol

Name: soulmusic101
Comment: huey ...Is it worse than eating pancakes with maple syrup and a glass of orange juice?

Name: huey
Comment: javone77 lol, i did it once...taste like vomit....but i digress, i dont know why i went there...i guess all this talk of oreos conjured up thoughts of my childhood...lol

Name: huey
Comment: soulmusic101 ..i dont think i have stumbled up on that one yet...lol

Comment: Oh well. I'm a fan of auto racing in general, including NASCAR. It would have been cool to see a Barack Obama-sponsored race car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Name: javone77
Comment: huey: that's nasty. your childhood was jacked. the nastiest thing I ever did was brushed my teeth and drank apple juice :-X

Comment: If this was sattire I dare them to publish a caricature of Cindy McCain slaughtering a Clydesdale horses on the lawn of the White House. Or what about a picture of Cindy with a rifle to August Busch's head making him sign over his beer empire to her. The New Yorker was wrong for that picture.

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: soulmusic101, white people do not a free pass to be on television discussing who is or who is not an Oreo . . . . . . there's a surreal quality to this discussion thread

Name: TGen
Comment: Well, people can try to defend this if they want, but personally, I think this fails the "satire" test. Satire is rooted in truth, that's why it's not comparable to the cover with Bush et al drowning on the cover. That pic was a metaphor for Katrina, it was rooted in the TRUTH about the abysmal job Bush did with Katrina. This ish with the Obamas on the cover totally misses the mark. If they wanted to satirize ignorance, they should have put a redneck on there somewhere to bring the point home, that only ignorant people believe things like that. But they didn't. And I heard that the accompanying article didn't even ADDRESS THE PICTURE, it was about something totally different. So basically you just have that cover standing all by its lonesome, allowing people to gather their own conclusions. And it was NOT something for just "intellectuals." Even really smart people would have a hard time getting the "satire" from that picture without accompanying explanation. It was just a pure choice all the way around and somebody's head needs to roll. I'm so sick of this ish I don't know what to do.

Name: javone77
Comment: tgen: you're right. remember when saturday night live said that hillary's supporter's were racist. those people had a doggone fit. now that barack is going through the same thing...they wanna say suck it up. well Hillary's supporter's should have sucked it up to. but the difference here is that hillary claimed her supporter's were white and implied that race would be a factor. noe of the things the new yorker had on the cover had any kind of truth to them.

Comment: Is the word "Oreo" still a taboo to speak in public?

Name: soulmusic101
Comment: Is there a cookie that calls out "Whites" that act "Black"?

Name: javone77
Comment: soul: I don't think it's so taboo anymore. I was in the mcdonald's drive through last week when this white guy who was working the window decided that maybe this was the right time to tell me that he was the white creamy center in the middle of two sexy chocolate cookies the night before and that he was a freak. :-X LOL

Comment: TGen: "...people can try to defend this if they want, but personally, I think this fails the "satire" test. Satire is rooted in truth..." True. If they had a picture of McCain sitting in a class with a dunce cap on, or with wearing his pilot's suit with 3 or 4 crashed planes behind him, there's truth to either because he was 4th from last in his graduating class and he crashed several planes before he was "captured" and began his life as a POW. Yeah, Obama will handle it with his usual grace and aplomb, but if you let them off easy, they'll take it up a notch next time. Kind of like the school yard bully. If he sees you're gonna take it, he'll keep dishing it out. But once you throw a couple of punches, he'll back off.

We're not stupid. This depiction has nothing to do with exposing the Obama-as-Muslim propoganda: if anything it supports it. Notice no article inside the magazine has anything to do with the cover illustration.

Comment: TGEN...not really true. Not all satire is rooted in truth. It's also rooted in sarcasm or a more modern def is a "parody." I can see how many would find it offensive. Had it come from MSNBC or FOX news..so would I. But, from a source that has a history of satires...I can accept this one..even if I'm not that fond of the subject. There is truth that people see him as a muslim and michelle angela davis===JAVONE...those descriptions you mentioned also don't make you black. So it goes both ways. DCDOUG!!!! AMEN AMEN AMEN. IMO ALL black folk...and I mean ALL black folk should take another look at this ol' democratic party we have unwaveringly supported over the years. This is the same party that has acted no different than the republican party. Most things that the repubs are "now" doing..are only regurgitations of what the democratic party had done to Obama during the primary...Hellary, her husband..and their supporters included.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: BTW...satire's aren't meant to disavow folks of what they already think. The people who would read the New Yorker are the ones who wouldn't believe that Obama was a Muslim neway. I guarantee you that it is not read by hard-working americans, white americans.

Comment: musbdherbs, the negative point about the New Yorker picture is that the picture, alone, will be used by vicious people to confirm every stupid, incorrect concept that is already circulating about Barack and those who will use the picture in that manner will happily lie that the picture represents what liberals think about their own candidate . . . . . earlier, on this board, I asked why liberal supporters felt that they needed to present O-BA-MA!! in this manner that racist repugs had not done [at least not yet] . . . . . why are liberal "supporters" sallying forth in the name of truth, justice and the American way with a "satirical" display that needs explanation in order to understand the humor: if needs to be explained, it's not funny

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: co-sign musbdherbs about the democratic party which has been [still is?] anti-black through much of its existence: pro-slavery and pro-segregation . . . . . many of the pro-segregation crowd went to the repugnant party . . . . . the remaining die-hard racists in the dems genuinely have no love for blacks and those folk operate below the radar in the party

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: HT...uhm..can't say I agree. The satire isn't supposed to correct nething. The problem...as demonstrated by your post is that it will only reconfirm the lies that people already believe and will hurt Obama. Ok! That may be the case. It's not the New Yorkers job to elect him though. It may not be funny and I'm sure the subject of their previous ones...larry criag, bush, condi etc...didn't find it funny. The more obvious point is "did you get it." I got it..and most of those here did as well. Doesn't mean that we liked it.

Comment: the repugs who claim to be the party of Lincoln are lying . . . . . long time ago, in another world, the party of Lincoln stood as advocates of public education and economic integration, defenders of the rights of Indians, women, and African-Americans up until the Civil War and they started changing afterward, leaning more towards states rights with a blind eye on the issues noted in this comment

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: musbdherbs, I never said that the satire was done as a correction, however, the cartoonist and New Yorker editors claim that the satire was poking fun at misunderstandings about O-BA-MA!! in the form of fear mongering and I think that they failed in their mission . . . . . as so many have already pointed out on this board and throughout the blogosphere, the humor has to be explained, so it's not funny nor does it dispell misunderstanding . . . . the cartoon is so ambiguous that it can and does support "truths" that any viewer holds about O-BA-MA!! either for him or against him
