Comment: It's a shame for the King Family or any other family to get to this point, having to sue a sibling.
For all they have been through, they shouldn't be sueing each other or taking money without all three agreeing to it.

@Fan.. You couldn't of said it any nicer. I've been at gatherings where this type of thing happened years before and once the whole family got together, drank a couple of beers etc, the fighting begun.

Comment: Actually you might ask where MLK111 works? when he was in charge of SCLC they wanted to fire him before he stepped down, imagine that getting fired from an organization your father started. This is so typical of families after the death of someone,it's been said that at a funeral there's always someone crying out of one eye, that's because they're watching the %*$ets,Dexter and their late sister Yolanda were allies so this continued fight is hardly a surprise.

Comment: these young'uns are demonstrating that their Dad's legacy for them is about as deep as the dollar that they idolize . . . . . hashing the money issues in private or in public changes nothing about their essential empty spiritual centers . . . . . despite their religious upbringing, we that that one can be in church 24/7 and still be spiritually void

Comment: Dc_Diva, so true. Honestly, I didn't understand how families could break up over something as petty as a few bucks b4 my grandmother died earlier this year, lol. I could have SWORN my tight-knit family was "above" all the nonsense--yeah right. So yeah, after seeing it my OWN family, I am not surprised in the least by this. Not in the least.

People are just plain crazy when money is involved. So don't be surprised. They are everyday people. Their parents were the ones....not them.....

Their father did all the giving, but Dexter's doing the big-living
The other kids said "fucc that".
They're parents moved on up,
To the mountain top.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
The parents moved on up, to the mountain top...and the kids wanna piece of the piiiiiiiiiiie.

Comment: If Coretta is turning over in her grave, it might be over guilt. Had she not put Dexter in charge the King Center, perhaps none of this would be happening. The King Center was about to be auctioned off to the GA Parks Department because it ran out of money. The Center was not being kept up or properly maintained. Dexter was accused of using whatever monies or donations for his own personal lifestyle. It seems to me that Dexter was the prodigal son as was favorite daughter, Yolanda because they probably backed anything Coretta did. It also seems to me that this situation is not only about money but that there was alot of personal resentment among the children. Their late sister, Yolanda was an 'actress' and a producer but she didn't seem have any problem paying her bills. And Dexter, another 'actor', well, he lives in Malibu, hence Fanteeking's comment about 'Chasin Miss Becky'. Obviously, losing an iconic father like Dr. King probably took a toll on the children and I think they just knew they could not live up to what people thought they should be. Their father left with nothing and now that they have the opportunity to use cultivate his image to generate income, they are fighting. If anyone remembers the use of Dr. King's 'I have a dream' speech for a cellphone company, some of us considered it blasphemus (sp?) in having his speech used to sell cellphones. I see this as siblings wanting to use their father's work but one wants to make profit through commerical means and the other wants to use it for public means.

Comment: OK, Dexter got it honest! His mother was one greedy winch! She got mad and Henry Louis Gates to pay for using some footage of MLK and he tried to explain that all he was doing was making this film so children could see history and she got mad and sued. He countersued and won $100K. If a child wanted to write a book report on MLK, you'd have to get permission rights. Civil Rights didn't start nor did it end with MLK. I could never understand how they were always so broke. Dexter took the money and so what are they going to do???? Man, their Dad must be rolling over in his grave! They can keep Graceland open but yet the MLK Center in Atlanta is always near closing because they can't afford to pay for day to day operations. Did anyone see 60 Minutes on how the King family was misusing funds??? Do any of them have real jobs???

Comment: DCGG> The impression I always got from Coretta is that she felt she should have been taken care of because she was Dr. King's widow. Dexter seems to have picked up one of his mother's traits as he probably feels the same way. Granted they lost their husband and father but while they seem to feel the public should pay for them hustling Dr. King's legacy, they have managed to screw up the money. Coretta always knew how much her husband was loved and IMO, used that to her advantage. Unfortunately, we are now seeing the fallout amongst the children...

Comment: How unfortunate. I pray they get this resolved and quickly. Also, it is amazing how I still feel they should go out and get jobs like the rest of us. The King legacy is very real, but I often wonder how much work it actually takes. I am sure its more than what I'd imagine, but I just wonder....

Comment: Bad_Kitty> I might be wrong about the cellphones but I think it was for some type of telecommunications company. This only happened about 2 to 3 years ago and all hell broke loose and the ad was yanked. It was said that Dexter was the one who authorized the use of the rights of Dr. King's image and voice. Disgusting is putting it mildly!

Comment: vroger2> If that's the case, they were not dealing with reality. It is what it is. Just because some folks were down with the movement does not mean that they didn't have their own agenda. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Andrew Young sitting on the board of Wal-Mart, a company notorious for underpaying and not providing decent health insurance for their workers? The unions have been after wal-mart for years and I think Andrew may have rescinded his position on the board of that company.

Comment: The conflict between the King chillun is long and deep and I believe it stems, in part, from favoritism show to Dexter. It emboldened him and made him arrogant. According to a recent Atlanta Journal Constitution report, they barely spoke to one another anyway and Yolanda had to try to keep the fake peace after Mrs. King died.
In some families, they don't even wait until the matriarch/patriarch pass. They clown all the time. My family is a prime example of that. My maternal grandmother always favored her youngest child. His siblings are in their sixties now and the infighting with him never ends. He recently announced that he's hosting a birthday party for grandma - she's nearly 90. Half of them aren't coming because he didn't consult them and he's asking them to help foot the bill. The last time they had a party for her, she ended up giving him most of the money that she received as gifts. On top of that, they are fighting like cats and dogs about how the family reunion should be held and who should be in charge. It is like watching 10 year olds. The wounds are really deep with this kind of thing.

Comment: This is a prime example of what happens when folk try to front. That dysfunction will always come to light somehow and some way. I've known plenty of people who were adept at keeping up appearances and when the truth about their situation was revealed, it was shattering. I have a relative who is prone to being very judgemental of everyone and talking about how she wouldn't put up with this and that in relation to other people's marriages. Come to find out she "secretly" divorced her husband, still wears her wedding ring and doesn't realize that everyone knows. She even brings him to family functions and calls him her "husband."

Comment: I'm with gingerg. This is nothing new in the King family. They (MLK III and Berniece) have all but said they have tried to resolve this amicably, before they filed the suit against their brother.
They are not supposed to sit there while Dex launders money, unauthorized out of the bank account, and neither should he.
Dex lives out here in Cali and he is a hot mess. He aint no joke with his cute self, but he is a hot azz mess.
Just because someone has a legacy to live through familiar doesn't mean that it's inbred in them; in fact, I would say that it's probably the inverse in their cases. It's all based on perception. They can either live the legacy and be proud of it, or be haunted by it and feel overshadowed by it. They could be both, depending on the child.
It's unfortunate, but true. The same thing goes on in families all around the country.

Comment: gingerg> You are absolutely right that Dr. Betty struggled and created a career for herself. Always quiet and dignified. I had no idea that this woman work for the city university until rap artists like Public Enemy started mentioning Malcolm X in their lyrics. Then everyone really took notice of Dr. Betty when Winnie Mandela came to NY after Nelson got out of prison and when Dr. Betty was introducing her, she then told the audience who she was, Winnie was shocked and grabbed her. Winnie was so honored to be in her presence and it showed.....Back to Coretta, I, too, have wondered where did all that money disappeared to considering Dr. King's status. I did not understand how CK had no where to live while Dexter was living it up in malibu.

Comment: I think the King family, from Coretta on down, has mismanaged MLK Jr's legacy. They all wanted to simply sit back and live off of his name (i.e., charge anyone for even saying the name "Martin Luther King"), and felt they were owed millions apiece annually (did I read somewhere King died without any substantial life insurance coverage? Perhaps a driving force in Coretta's disposition). And what exactly does Dexter do? Kind of like Tommy on "Martin": nobody to this day knows what Tommy did for a living.
