Comment: Hmmmmmm. We'll have to see. Saw the trailer for this and some scenes appeared to be over the top. Downey's a good actor, but let's hope he didn't go overboard with stereotyped perceptions in this one.

Comment: Ummm...dakoolestkat - You missed the whole point of his character....He plays a white guy who takes a black role in a fictional movie....the movie is produced by Ben Stiller, so that should tell you it's a comedy and the whole point of his character being actually white adds to the humor.

Comment: Angel, you beat me to the punch. And where's there is Ben Stiller, there is humor and hijinks. Lets see how it turns out when the movie is released. I am a Robert Downey Jr. fan since Less than Zero.

Comment: I saw the trailer to this and it didn't seem offensive at all. It is a Ben Stiller pic so you can't take it seriously. From the trailers though, it doesn't look stomach-clutching funny. It just looks like it'll have some jokes in it. Stiller's stuff is starting to wear on me. He never seems to change his facial expression!

Comment: Why are black people so ready to get up in arms, protest, boycott etc. when they Wayan's brothers, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Eddie Griffin and probably others that I can't recall at the moment, do WHITEFACE all the time?? Plus, when they do it, it is more to "mock" white people than to imitate. I have no problem with this role at all.

Comment: I saw the trailer and it looks funny to me. I have no problem with it, because it is supposed to be a white man playing a black man. Why don't we complain when Eddie, Arsenio, Dave and even Tyler take on additional roles, be it a different race or sex? When I saw the three stars of this movie, Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey do Midnight Train to Georgia, I cracked up.

Comment: Penelope: I also agree about OUR men having to don dresses and makeup to entertain. White comedians rarely if ever do that , with the exception of Robin Williams but he is "suspect" to me anyway.

Comment: I saw a screening of it last night and it was hilarious. Downey's performance was funny and the least bit offensive. The whole joke is built around the ridiculous extremes method actors go to when trying to "get into character."

Comment: For the brain dead folks who thinks blackface is fine, I suggest you check out the history of blackface. As for whiteface, I think that is also stupid. Black actors shouldn't have to do that. And, I love it how some blacks think our image in the media shouldn't be an issue. As far as I'm concerned, with that thinking, you folks are part of the problem, not the solution.

Comment: The strangest thing is there is nothing in the article to suggest that anybody is protesting anything. It is an actor given a critique of another actor's performance. That's it. I'm puzzled by some of the comments.

Comment: Blackface was/is, to some folks, an accurate portrayal of blacks. What is that "accurate" portrayal of blacks? Speaking ebonics, doing silly dances, googly eyes, etc. And, in order for a white person to portray a black person, he or she will to engage in blackface most of the time. Nice try. If you want to be a moron and support the image of blacks as fools in the media, whether it be a white person or a black person doing the portrayal, fine. But, I'm not supporting any of this garbage.

Comment: NYCSoul: I made the comment because black folks are QUICK to protest be it by picket or mouth, when it comes to anything we think might be poking fun at the black race. Even the black actor in the film according to this article, had to question the role RD Jr. was playing. Just like Disney is having a hell of a time with the "Frog Princess" movie because people have too much to say about the direction of the cartoon. I mean, folks wanted the lead character's name to be changed because it sounded too much like "Mammy." Maddie was the original name of the lead character in that movie. It has now been changed to Tiana, because of the criticism of black people. Sometimes, we talk loud but say nothing and it bites us in the azz.

Comment: Blackdragon - Calm the f*ck down. No need to be calling folks names. You haven't even seen the movie so you don't know how Robert Downey, jr. portrays a "black guy". That was my point...just because he portrays a black guy doesn't mean he goes straight for the negative stereotypical portrayal which most people consider to be a "blackface" performance. Just like actors portray all types of roles, it doesn't automatically mean it will be offensive to the group or person being portrayed. Relax, dude....

Comment: I have not heard of anyone protesting or making a big deal about this picture. But people have the right to protest if they want. Black face is part of our history and some people are very sensitive about White actors portraying Black actors even if it's part of a comedy. If there were more opportunities for Black actors to portray a variety of characters, I think this would not be an issue with some people.
However, I think this picture would have been more realisitic if Robert Downey Jr. played a White actor who pretended to be a black rapper in order to get a role that is intended for a Black actor.
The Frog Princess is going to be a very big deal to Black folks. Because there are so few positive images of Blacks on film I think Black people just want to make sure that it is done right and in a way that we can be proup. I think Disney is trying to be sensitve to the needs of our community. If studios had a more diverse group of Black writers and if they valued these writers work and opinions, then they would have a better idea of what buttons they should not push.

Comment: PRDC--he does look realistic and that is because 'Black' features are dominant -our genes are dominant, white genes are recessive and more mutant, its easier for them to play up their features-get tan, etc, because its who they should have been to begin with! We, black folk, by ethnicity, but African by direct ancestry, come from strength. Its too bad so many of us forget that on a regular basis.
But I co-sign most folk on this one, the difference with this one is that its a white actor in a movie that is spoofing Hollywood and the notion that they won't get authentic Blacks to play significant movie roles. It remains to be seen how well RD will carry this in the actual movie.
'White Girls' on the other hand was some negroids finding gross humor in stereotypes and bringing those images to life. Same to a lesser degree, with the black men portraying black women roles...all of these movies straight converted stereotypes.

Comment: It might not be offensive?? However, the very premise is stupid. Considerating that there are extremely few leading roles written for black actors and more than enough for white actors, why would an "award" winning white actor need to go after a black role. If anything, the premise would make more sense in reverse: an awarding winning blk actor who can't get work, uses make up to get a role written for a white man. Hell if sure there are plenty who would if they thought they could get away with it

Comment: 'Ya know, Luke_Cage, I dug Less Than Zero(still get sad thinking about the scene when his friends are driving him after the party and their singing with each other) and knowing how his life has been with the drugs and all it's funny seeing how art imitated life. But Downey is a good actor and I think this movie will be funny as hell.

Comment: DOne - That's the whole point of Downey's character...from what I know of the movie, the black actors in the fictional movie are all pizzed that Downey's character gets the leading black role. The movie is trying to make light of how ridiculous it is for him to be in this movie.

Comment: I can't wait for the movie to come out. My main reason for seeing it is RD's character. I thought the trailer scene when he says, "what do you mean 'you people'?" and the real black guy says, "what do YOU mean 'you people'"? was funny as all get out. And the theme song to the Jeffersons part. I cracked up!! Luke: Less Than Zero was my movie too. Been a fan ever since.
