Comment: before I respond to JCP's essay, I wanna give a shout out to McWhy because he canceled a planned campaign trip to an oil rig out in the gulf . . . . . the claim was bad weather due to Hurricane Dolly but the truth is there was a massive oil spill in the near New Orleans yesterday (7/23/2008) . . . . . the McDuh! campaign thought it might not look too good with McOilsupporter touting the safety of offshore drilling while there was another headline about an oil spill nearby . . . . I would laugh but this is not funny

Comment: HT, his campaign is imploding right before our eyes. They cannot match the Obama rout, it's like allstars versus benchwarmers, lol. It's really becoming painful to watch. If things continue this way into November, it will be a blowout, you heard it hear first. Even the "I'll never vote for a colored" crowd will not be able to deny the reality at that point.

Comment: damn skippy, TGen, and don't bet nothing that them clintoons are pleased as punch about the success of BHO's trip to demonstrate his grasp of foreign affairs . . . . JCP, we will get back to you, momentarily

Comment: HarrisThomas....LOL!!! McWhy may have to change those campaign commercials because of that. The one thing the "domestic drilling" folks tend to forget is, we can live without oil (it'll be rough as hell) but we damn sure can't live without fresh water and if we drill here and %*$!( it up, we'll be totally screwed. At least the Saudis and other mideastern countries have sand to absorb the oil spills when they happen and even if we did that, this country wouldn't see any gas price relief until years and years later, then that oil would be sold to the highest bidder, China and India, because the american dollars doesn't have as much value as it used to!!!!!

Comment: I don't know where he's shopping b/c where I live all of those organic, eco-friendly and "green" products cost twice as much.

Comment: You know if Jospeh C. Phillips were really into this subject he'd at least post this website, http://www.motherearthnews.com/; the information on this site tells it all, even how to make some of these things that cost more organically, cheaper!!! Like washing powder.

Comment: Did anyone see Joseph's comments made on CNN's "Black in America" last night???? Soledad was doing a segment on the criminal justice system and how it unfairly sentenced black offenders versus whites, particularly crack cocaine offenses. I respect JCP to have his own opinions and stances, but I felt like I was watching a Step-N-Fetch coonery "yassa captun boss I's feelin mightygooooodtodaysa".. His stance was it's not like cops are picking up innocent people off the streets, because we all know that NEVER happens. He felt that people that anyone sentenced under these laws got what they deserve.. Although the point was that white offenders don't get as harsh sentences as blacks... That went right over his head. I actually felt sorry for this guy.

Comment: I'm having trouble understanding how you start off with an article decrying the moral superiorism of eco-friendly products and then end up moaning about how much these things cost. The REASON eco-friendly things cost so much is that in most cases, they are not done on a mass scale with enough 'supply' to drive the cost down. It's simple economics and it's not the fault off eco-friendly manufacturers and growers. The fact is that as a country and a world we've been massively wasteful and abusive to the environment. Over the last thirty years we've drilled in the ground to suck up the earth's oil like there was an infinite supply. We have not seriously considered other alternatives to oil and its power, including the free alternatives like solar and wind power. It's only now that the dollar is in the crapper, gas is at an all time high, war is raging in the part of the world where oil is most plentiful, we're in an election year, and circumstances have basically FORCED us to conside alternatives to protecting the earth that we want our grandchildren to live in that we've had to grow up. And while cost is a concern for the average among us. This is the time to innovate and get some grand scale on these things so that we can drive the cost down. This isn't a matter of political convenience or grandstanding... it's a matter of life and death for us and our children's children.

Comment: And I did see JCP's comments in the Black in America piece and I thought he looked silly and off topic. I get the tough on crime stance. I'm all for that. If you %*$ault my family or me, I want you to pay regardless of your color. But they were talking about different sentences for the SAME crime and disparity in treatment based on color... regardless of one's color, it sure does sound stupid to be taking the whole tough on crime spiel when that wasn't what they were talking about.

Comment: I saw JCP on BinA too and it just made me cringe. The moral aspect of crime was not the issue -- the inequitable justice system was being discussed. Yes, Tony Soprano and Tony n' Em from the corner are equally morally corrupt, but the topic was the laws view of rock v. powder cocaine, etc. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but the guy is so self-righteous he just misses the point. Today, I'm shocked because we actually share a view. It is shameful that Eco-friendly (for the most part) products are more costly (yes, Exmum, I acknowledge that production rates may drive some of the cost factors) but in some cases, it's just a matter of what's "cool". He didn't really go into the why's of it, but it is true. It costs a whole lot more to get a fresh organic tomato than to go to the local mexican market here and get tomatos imported from Mexico (salmanella, anyone! wicked pesticides!? -- that's another issue). My 88 yr old Nana repeatedly tells me stories of her mother's garden -- too bad more of us don't grow our own these days....Farmer's markets are good alternatives AND it supports local small businessmen.

Comment: some points here: - I can see where Joe gets the "consumer" mindset from re: eco-friendly products. I think the producers of these items are tryna break and "old" concept into "new" american (i.e. consumer) society. - recycling is not new. folks with less, i.e. poor folks, traditionally don't have to luxury to be SO wasteful as the person with more money is. -quality over quantity is something to learn when adopting a recycle.reuse. lifestyle. -it IS a lifestyle change - to become conscious of your USE/WASTE in this world -our kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, are gonna have an interesting world to live in based on how we leave the earth. period. -(again) it's a lifestyle change, i.e. expensive copays, frequent Dr's visits to treat a symptom (no cures here-gotta fund the machine) vs. paying to eat healthy on this end (vs. the sickness end) -small steps make big changes = lightbulbs that last longer, cars that use less fuel, turning off lights when not in use (remember what Mom used to say), turning off water while brushing your teeth = these are free! steps -you don't have to purchase eco-friendly products from the rip = start using up what you have and asking yourself what you really NEED before you make idle purchases = less driving too and from places -we gotta change our consumer mindset. frankly, it simply keeps us in a cycle of spending vs. wealth = economically and physically

Name: adifferentpath
Comment: (other suggestions to minimize your impact on the planet) - a person might pay to get a manicure, pedicure, outfit (outer stuff) but not pay good money for the food (fuel) they put in their bodies...or the nail polish they use - chemicals are absorbed into our bodies -Whole Paycheck i.e. Whole Foods is NOT the only market in town AND you frankly don't have to shop there - shop the "outer a.k.a. perimeter" aisles at your grocery store. that's where the healthy food lives. - buy local when possible. folks in CA seem to have cheaper and more health food stores - that's where the majority of food is shipped from to the east coast. -start reading labels of food you eat. eat less crap. (sounds easy, but it's addictive...just like the drugs pumped into them) I love some McDonald's...but McDonald's keeps my arse spending...and driving thru....and throwing away vs. a hamburger made with some decent meat or a turkey burger or a veggie burger...no drive thru....I had to put them down....and start cooking.... (ok, pushing soap box back under desk) -it's just one at a time, making small steps toward a cleaner, healthier world -individually and as a whole- and away from being so consumeristic. ok. done.
