Comment: I'm glad to see a story on this topic. Because when the incident happened, my first thought was WTF was going on with Whoopi and Sherri??? But at the same time, it also speaks to something that I have been uncomfortable with from day one. Meaning the day Whoopi and Sherri joined that mess called 'The View'. Whoopi is not a good fit for that show. And she has this history of defending blatent, racist incidents, by putting it back on the victims, claiming that they're 'overreaction' is the problem. Never has anything disparaging to say about racists themselves. And Sherri is just too ignorant and stupid to be there. She makes Elizabeth Hasselbeck look smart and she even gets gossip incorrect. I don't know who should be sitting in Sherri's chair, but Whoopi's spot should have been filled by either Gayle King or Renee Suyler. Professional women who know what they're talking about.

Comment: I, too, am glad that someone is taking a stance against this vulgar word. I am of mixed race with one Black parent and the other white/Jewish. I can honestly say that my Jewish relatives ans friends would NEVER use this word to describe themselves, even in jest. It should be made a hate crime. When I pay visit to many schools in the inner city, too many kids are walking up and down the halls loudly saying N** this and N** that. I'm sure it's because their parents also wear the N-word like a crown of glory. I try commenting on this board, but I notice way too many of the commenters are way to proud to use the word. It should be made a hate crime to utter it.

Comment: Darryl Bell is preaching to the choir. I, too, am glad more and more blacks are standing up against blacks and others who use the racial slur.

Comment: I agree with all the foregoing posts. I was very disappointed in Whoopi and Sherri re that discussion and sad that there was no one presenting the opposing "view" re the use of The Word -- except Elizabeth. A strange circumstance indeed when Elizabeth is the only one making sense. The double-standard use rule is indefensible; if you voluntarily put The Word into the public domain (via music, videos, movies, etc.), then the public has a right to use it. What other ethnic group "embraces" and glorifies a hate word used against them? I absolutely do not understand "our" love of a word that carries the baggage of so much negative history. We are a creative group -- can't we come up with our own term of endearment for ourselves?

Comment: I agree with everyone comments, I don't watch the View, just happened to see it that day, sadly those two bird brains Whoopi and Sherri sat before a mostly white audience and proudly defended the n-word....for shame. To bad there wasn't an intelligent black woman sitting up there as well to put the brakes on Sherri and Whoopi's stupidity to let America know that word isn't embraced by all African Americans. Yes Whoopi and Sherri please stop with the foolery and represent.
