Comment: Interesting observation. I'm very courious to see how Obama's stance on affirmative action plays out, and how his supporters respond to it.

Comment: Earl, I'm not familiar w/Obama's response to Connerly's ad back in '06. It is best to point out the difference 'tween a quota and affirmative action. The purpose of a quota is to set aside a certain limited number of slots for minority candidates. It is simply a numerical calculation. Affirmative action has been so politicized that when most people here it, they think that it is solely a set aside for minority candidates irrespective of qualifications. In a push for diversity, AA is supposed to ensure that there are greater numbers of minority representation of equally qualified candidates...not just hiring a person becz of their minority status. It is important becz it is the only resource available that ensures groups which have been historically kept out of the labor force, are given consideration.

Comment: I meant Obama's ad on Connerly's initiative. Re: Obama, in our current position, the goals of affirmative action should be revisited because there has been a change in minority representation across the board and now the issue is more about class than it is race. He flatly said that he does not believe his children should be given special consideration due to their race bcz of the advantages of class they were born into. that is not something I disagree w/at all. But again, you need to make distinctions between quota (numerical) and affirmative action (long-range goals).

Comment: how much of this is pure politics about affirmative action and how much is really about getting a canddidate elected? . . . . . states that have affirmative action, abortion, same sex marriage and other such issues as referenda on their ballots for any election but especially a presidential election, tend to have large numbers of people turning out to vote on those issues . . . . . the candidate who espouses the viewpoints held by most of the people voting on these referenda tends to win those elections: this ploy worked extremely well for dubya in 2004, so much so that even black people voted for him because he was against same sex marriage and a referendum on same sex marriage was on their ballots becuase RNC worked hard to get it there
