Comment: Morning y'all! Happy 50th Birthday to my baby daddy Michael Joseph Jackson. Yeh yeh. I'm know I'm the wrong color, but can't I dream? I get made fun of cos I am SO in love with him and have been for years. I used to cut out every article about him from the newspaper or magazines. Everything that came on TV about it, I had to record it. I have a box full of VHS tapes full of MJJ. I also have a box full of clippings about him. So I was a bit fanatical when it came to him. When I was little, I even used to pretend that we were friends. Okay, so maybe I was a little obsessed with him, but he is the King of Pop. I'mma stop now before y'all start to think I ain' got it all...lol. Y'all have a blessed day. Happy Friday! Be safe.

Comment: Hey Jfrom I was like that about Michael Jackson from @ 1982 until 1993. When he popped back on the scene with smooth criminal video I was hornswaggled, bamboozled and led astray when I saw him for the first time and his face looked like something from the Secret of the Nimph. Michael Jackson was my first love and he broke my heart. I even stood by him during his first child molestation allegation, but I had to face the truth when he was caught giving that boy in remission Jesus Juice. Lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice. Well in closing all I can say is beat it, beat it beat it beat it, no one want to be defeated. Showing funky, strong is your fight. It does matter whose wrong or whose right.

I told him that he will remember that moment and will talk about it to his kids and to their kids, and so forth. What an awesome speech. Did anyone see his wedding photo. I thought it was cute black and white photo. This morning on the Russ Parr radio show, Russ said that Michelle was looking at Obama with that look, that was saying "Boy, I am going to give you some tonight". LOL. I laughed all the way to work.

Comment: And Now The “Hater Report”! DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Despite a stadium packed far past capacity, with nearly 90,000 supporters wildly applauding nominee Barack Obama as he spoke Thursday, Republicans responded with one hand gesture: thumbs down. Presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain issued a statement minutes after Obama wrapped his speech: "Tonight, Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama. "When the temple comes down, the fireworks end and the words are over, the facts remain: Sen. Obama still has no record of bipartisanship, still opposes offshore drilling, still voted to raise taxes on those making just $42,000 per year and still voted against funds for American troops in harm's way. "The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be president." There was just too much glitz and glamour emanating from the floor of the Invesco Field, transformed by a crew of seasoned Hollywood veterans, conservatives said. Obama's rhetoric is intended to mask the fact that he is relatively new to public service compared to John McCain, they said. McCain, for his part, put out an ad Thursday congratulating Obama on his nomination -- an unusually generous move for any politician, particularly one vying to become the next U.S. president, pundits said.Dubbing Invesco the "Temple of Obama," GOP spin artists responded to the part of Obama's speech in which he promised to lower taxes on the middle class. Writing on notready08.com, GOP supporters wrote, "From the Temple grounds, Barack Obama will outline an agenda for America that includes raising taxes, increasing spending, putting government bureaucrats in charge of health care and isolating America from the benefits of the global economy."While Barack Obama will talk about his plans to tax the 'rich' and cut taxes on the middle class, he will not say that his record includes voting for higher taxes 94 times and voting for a tax increase on those making just $42,000 per year."

Comment: CNN Reports-Obama told supporters, "As commander in chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm's way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home."In one of the sharpest zingers of the night, Obama said, "John McCain likes to say that he'll follow bin Laden to the Gates of Hell -- but he won't even follow him to the cave where he lives."McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds called the statement an "insult" on CNN's Larry King, saying it "ignored" everything McCain had done. On the economy, Bounds cut into Obama's claim that he will pay for a spending increase, by bringing up an Associated Press article on the subject published in August. Obama said Thursday night, "Now, many of these plans will cost money, which is why I've laid out how I'll pay for every dime -- by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don't help America grow. But I will also go through the federal budget, line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work and making the ones we do need work better and cost less -- because we cannot meet 21st-century challenges with a 20th-century bureaucracy."

Comment: WASHINGTON - A woman who has never shown symptoms of infection with the AIDS virus may hold the secret to defeating the virus, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.
Infected at least 10 years ago by her husband, the woman is able somehow to naturally control the deadly and incurable virus -- even though her husband must take cocktails of strong HIV drugs to control his.
She is a so-called "elite suppressor," and studies of her immune cells have begun to offer clues to how her body does it, the team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said.
"This is the best evidence to date that elite suppressors can have fully pathogenic virus," said Dr. Joel Blankson, who led the study.
"The feeling was initially that they had defective virus," Blankson added in a telephone interview.
But the couple has been monogamous for at least 17 years, Blankson said, and tests show they are infected with the same strain of virus. What is different is the immune system of the wife, who cannot be named for privacy reasons.
"That's a good sign in terms of developing a therapeutic vaccine," Blankson said. Such a vaccine would not prevent infection but might be used to treat patients.
The AIDS virus infects at least 33 million people globally and more than a million in the United States. It has killed 25 million people since it was identified in the early 1980s.
New figures show 56,000 people are infected every year in the United states, mostly gay and bisexual men but also injecting drug users and their sexual partners, both male and female, as well as newborns and recipients of contaminated blood transfusions.
Both the man and the woman, who are from Baltimore, were diagnosed 10 years ago, Blankson said. The husband is a former injecting drug user.
Tests showed that immune cells known as CD8 T-cells from the wife stalled HIV replication by as much as 90 percent, while the husband's T-cells stopped it by only 30 percent, Blankson's team reported in the Journal of Virology.
Her virus has also mutated in apparent response to this immune attack, becoming weaker, while her husband's virus has remained strong.

Comment: Elite suppression offers clues to vaccine researchers on many fronts: how CD8 killer T-cells can attack HIV and how a stronger immune response can force HIV into a permanent defensive state," Blankson said.
"We are trying to figure out exactly how the T-cells work in her to inhibit viral replication," he added. "We are just trying to see what kind of cytokines they make."
Cytokines are immune system signaling proteins. One thing the researchers have noticed is that while the husband's T-cells make just one, called gamma interferon, hers made both that one and another called TNF, or tumor necrosis factor.
That cannot be the whole story, though, because AIDS researchers have tried using such immune system proteins in patients and they did not work well.
And her immune cells seem to make the response only when they encounter the virus.
Another clue: the woman may have unusual activity in her human leukocyte antigen system, or HLA, Blankson said. This important component of the immune system helps recognize antigens -- protein identifiers -- of enemies such as bacteria and viruses.

Comment: Some of Hillary Clinton's most fervent supporters are taking their enthusiasm and their campaign contributions to John McCain.
More than 85 of Clinton's fundraisers, including Donald Trump, Univision chief executive Joseph Uva, cable mogul Charles Dolan, philanthropist Norma Hess and one of Florida's biggest lobbyists appear to be skipping Barack Obama when it comes to writing checks for the general election, according to an ABCNews.com review of campaign finance records.
These Clinton donors have contributed at least $200,000 to McCain's campaign in the last few months, an amount which doesn't include larger contributions to the Republican joint fundraising committees.
But the defecting donors, along with a significant segment (20 percent) of Clinton fans who have expressed support for McCain in recent polls, could present a problem for Obama in the general election.
In her convention speech on Tuesday night, Clinton passionately encouraged her supporters to back Obama, but some of her one-time backers weren't convinced.
"That speech was amazing, but it's not going to change my mind," one Texas donor, who gave $2,300 to Clinton earlier this year and contributed $2,300 to McCain last month, told ABCNews.com. "I talk to plenty of people like me who just won't accept an unqualified president."
At least one of Clinton's HillRaisers, elite fundraisers who contributed at least $100,000 to her failed campaign, recently donated to the Republican candidate.
Charles Dolan, head of the giant Cablevision, wrote a $2,300 check to McCain on June 30 after Clinton's initial plea to help Obama.
Ronald Book, one of the biggest lobbyists in Florida who represents clients as diverse as the University of Miami and Bell South, raised $700,000 for President Clinton in recent years and contributed the maximum to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign earlier this year.
Now, he's contributing to McCain and is leaning toward endorsing the Republican nominee. Book notes that he wouldn't give money to Obama even if the candidate took money from lobbyists.
"Obama has said a lot of stuff, but nothing with a concrete vision," says Book. "I have heard at least some sensible things from Senator McCain. He's a comeback kind of guy and I've heard from many other people who are clearly leaning in his direction."

Comment: Donald Trump Switches Sides
Trump, the New York realtor and reality show host, has long been a bipartisan campaign contributor and gave $2,000 to John Kerry's campaign in 2004.
This time around, he contributed $600 to Clinton. But when it was clear in May that her campaign was over, The Donald gave the legal maximum individual contribution of $2,300 to McCain's primary fund and another $2,300 to his general election fund. He even tried to give an extra $1,000, but the McCain campaign returned it because it was over the legal limit. Trump's spokeswoman did not return e-mails for comment.
California researcher Danit Aharon was among those who changed her financial allegiance, gving $2,300 to McCain at the end of June. Aharon could not be located for comment.
Several Democratic defectors contacted by ABCNews.com were reluctant to go on the record with their reasons for defying the party and contributing to McCain.
Certainly many Clinton supporters are heeding her wishes and staying loyal to the Democratic Party's nominee when it comes to their fundraising.
Clinton donors have raised at least $3.4 million for the Obama campaign, according to a Clinton staffer, who added that Clinton encouraged 150 of her donors to donate to Obama at a hotel reception on Wednesday and telling them "that it's a mistake to donate to John McCain."
As for the number of her donors who have contributed to McCain, "That's a ratio we can live with," said a Clinton staffer, declining to be identified while discussing the subject.
Some of Clinton's HillRaisers, such as financier Ron Perelman and Hassan Nemazee, have opened up their checkbooks for Obama.
While the ratio may favor Obama, there are indications that while most of Clinton's financial backers aren't giving money to the enemy, they are sitting on their wallets. Obama has yet to receive contributions from some prominent HillRaisers, including Steve Bing and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. Only 70 of Clinton's more than 300 HillRaisers have contributed to Obama, according to a New York Times analysis.

Comment: Obama's Camp Pleased With Clinton Donors
In any bitterly-fought contest like this year's Democratic primary, there are bound to be disaffected voters on the losing side, says Costas Panagopoulos, professor of political science at Fordham University.
But he predicts that party defections will be much more common this year, especially to the detriment of Democrats and Obama due to McCain's moderate reputation.
"Had it been a different Republican, Democrats would not have been able to consider defecting so easily," Panagopoulos says, adding that he doesn't see much evidence of Republicans supporting Obama. "But given the perception that McCain is a moderate, there is a good chance that some Clinton supporters will defect to him."
A spokesman for the Obama campaign e-mailed a statement, emphasizing their gratitude to the many Clinton donors who are supporting and donating to Obama:
"Just the other night, Hillary Clinton made a strong, heartfelt case to her supporters and all Americans for why they should join her in supporting Barack Obama for president. Americans across the country understand how urgently we need change, not four more years of failed Bush policies and we've been very pleased that so many who supported Senator Clinton in the primary have taken active roles in the Obama campaign, organizing, raising money, and most importantly, talking to their friends and neighbors about the clear choice in this election."

Comment: Two homeless people were each held on $500,000 bail on charges they beat a woman so severely that she lost 14 teeth, prosecutors said.
About 10:25 p.m. Monday, Joyce Burgess, 36, and Derrick King, 46, approached a couple in Chicago's South Loop as they left the Jewel grocery store at Roosevelt Road and Wabash Avenue, prosecutors said.
The couple were out celebrating Jennifer Hall's 36th birthday at the Wabash Tap before deciding to shop for groceries, said her boyfriend, Joseph Hoffman.
Burgess and King walked up to Hoffman, 36, and Hall and asked for cigarettes, which Hall and Hoffman did not have, prosecutors said. The couple took a few steps before Burgess attacked Hall from behind, knocking her to the ground, Hoffman said.
Hoffman said he ran to her aid, but that King attacked him. The two scuffled into the street, and King tried to go through his pockets, Hoffman said.
King then became angry that Hall was fighting with Burgess, so he ran over and kicked Hall in the head and the face, knocking out her teeth, Hoffman said.
"She was just lying on the ground with a pool of blood around her head," Hoffman said. "She was out cold."
Police said Burgess and King fled but were caught minutes later and that Hoffman identified them as the attackers. Hall's cell phone was stolen during the incident but was found in Burgess' possession when she was arrested, police said.
Both were charged with two counts of robbery, police said. King also was charged with aggravated battery, and Burgess was charged with battery. Cook Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. set their bail.
Hall, who has severe head injuries, remains hospitalized in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She was in a drug-induced coma and is in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Hoffman refused medical treatment after the attack, police said.
The couple moved to the South Loop in March. Hall just started a job at a restaurant and hasn't qualified for health insurance. Hoffman plans to start a trust fund to pay for medical bills. Hall has been in the intensive care unit for three days, he said.
Burgess and King have long criminal histories.
Burgess has three previous felony convictions for aggravated battery to a police officer and drug-related charges, according to court records. King has five misdemeanor convictions for domestic battery, theft, criminal trespassing and criminal damage to property, prosecutors said.
Both defendants were listed as living at the Pacific Garden Mission in the 1400 block of South Canal Street. But Byron Freeman, the shelter's security director, said King has not lived there for several years and that Burgess hasn't been at the shelter for about six months.

Comment: Want to know why we're naked?" Laura Fielding asked two puzzled elderly women who froze in their tracks at Scottsdale Fashion Square.
"Well, would you like to come in for a hand treatment?" asked Fielding, who, except for her apron and shoes, was stark naked with bare backside showing.
Noontime shoppers at the upscale mall did double takes with eyes and mouths wide open as they passed cosmetics store Lush and its nearly nude employees: Fielding, Shawna Thompson, Audrey Magnuson and Jessi Leahy.
For an hour, the four women enticed mallgoers into the store to learn about its environmentally friendly products.
The women of the Canadian-based store stripped down to a black apron, with "Ask Me Why I'm Naked" printed in large white letters, in an effort to highlight the company's products, which are sold with little to no packing materials.
"Sex is definitely going to bring people in," said Thompson, 20, from behind her apron and flip-flops.
"It's awesome. If we need to get our message to stick with people, why not do it naked?"
Consumers throw out about 79.6 million tons of packing material yearly, with 40 percent of that being recycled, according to a Federal Trade Commission report.
In addition to filling landfills, packing material also pads the price of goods.
No need to worry about that at Lush, where 66 percent of its products come with no packaging at all.
"If we have to be completely naked to get our message across, that's what we are willing to do," Magnuson said, noting that the group is passionate about its cause.

They may still say something to me later but oh well after that show of love I could care less. I went over my moms and we had an Obama party with a few people over and his speech just had me in tears. I just can't even put it into words especially watching my mom talk about how far we have all come as a people and to be able to see it in her lifetime had her bawling so then I started bawling and pretty much everyone dropped some tears but they were happy tears. My parents are 60, and they live in the deep/deep south where there are still dirt roads. My mom use to tell me that they was so hungry one time, that she caught a rabbit with her bare hands and they had that with gravy and a bisquit to eat. It pains me to hear her talk of those times of growing up. I would think that they of all people would like to see a change. At least give the man a shot.*sigh*

Comment: BY MAUDLYNE IHEJIRIKA AND ROSALIND ROSSI Staff Reporters
Time's up, the Rev. James Meeks said Thursday.
The three-day boycott is on.

(Sun-Times file)

"No more time. The window has expired," Meeks said.
Next Tuesday, the state senator and pastor of Salem Baptist, a South Side megachurch, hopes to bus about 2,000 Chicago Public Schools students to north suburban schools. The students will boycott their first day of school to call attention to school-funding inequities.
As Meeks plowed forward, officials at Winnetka's New Trier High School said they're prepared to welcome the students, who plan to ride 125 buses there and try to enroll.
The students also planned to go to Sunset Ridge Elementary School in Northfield, but they'll be received in one location -- New Trier's Northfield campus.
"To most responsibly accommodate a group of this size, the New Trier High School and Sunset Ridge Elementary school districts will hold a single registration process," Laura Blair, spokeswoman for New Trier's District 203, said in a statement.
CPS students can enroll, Blair said, but "the first step in the student registration process is to provide proof of residency."
Meeks had offered earlier this week to call off the boycott if Gov. Blagojevich, state Senate President Emil Jones and House Speaker Michael Madigan agreed to back his $120 million, three-year plan to reform Illinois' most seriously ailing schools by today, but he gave up on that idea Thursday.
"I still believe that there is time to reconsider that decision," said state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, whose district includes New Trier.
Schoenberg has been working with Meeks on logistics for the suburban protest and on urging a meeting of top state leaders.
"I'm hoping that Sen. Meeks will be inspired by Barack Obama's remarks tonight to the point where he redoubles his efforts to bring our leaders together," Schoenberg said Thursday.
"The Senate president agreed, and the speaker of the House agreed," Meeks said.
"The governor never did agree, and there's just no more time. I can't start everything in motion and pull it back. It would make me look uncommitted," Meeks said.
Meeks had proposed identifying 12 failing high schools -- in Chicago, the south suburbs and Downstate -- and their feeder elementary and middle schools, for three years' worth of audits and reforms.
Instead, he will be taking CPS students to New Trier High School, which spends $17,000 per student compared with $10,000 per student in Chicago.

Comment: Now let me rant for a minute! I'm sick and tired of people saying Barack isn't ready to lead, what made Hiillary ready, sleeping next to Bill? Just cause you sleep next to a Doctor, doesn't mean I want you operating on me. She doesn't have that much more time as an Senator than Barack. Do you have to be in Washington for 20 plus years before your considered ready to lead? Just because your a life long Senator like Mcain, doesn't mean your judgement is better, if you make the same mistakes over and over again, why would you expect different results? I'll go with someone with less experience with new ideas, than someone with old ideas expecting different results, it's insane to think something would change with that type of thinking. But that's the best they can come up with, Barack's not ready to lead, GTFOH...... Comment: Good Morning Beautiful Black People! Happy Obama Day! I just left a lengthy post on the Obama board, so I'll just repeat it here for those of you that don't go there: *still crying* Wow. Look at my President. Look at my 1st Family...They look magnificent! Obama's speech was just wonderful! He said everything that needed to be said, how it needed to be said. He shut McCain DOWN and he let America know exactly WHY he's the best man for the job. He covered everything in detail as to exactly what he's gonna do when he becomes the President. He broke it down in full detail what he has in store for us. OMG...I was just in total AWE of him last night. He moved me...he moved the world. Martin Luther King is definitely smiling down on us and he is extremely proud. I'm so overwhelmingly full of pride right now. Obama is the epitome of what a President, a husband, a father and a son should be. Obama gives hope to the black men of America...he has shown us that WE CAN excel if we persevere and just work to our fullest potential. He is an inspiration to us all and his love for his family and his community is what I love most about him. Obama isn't just talking about it, he has LIVED it. He is the OPPOSITE of an elitist. He has given so much of himself and he has a proven track record of how much he cares for his community. My question to the naysayers is, why WOULDN'T you vote for him? Especially for those that are democrats...If you're a democrat and you're NOT voting for Obama, then you have GOT to be crazy! They say was inexperienced, Joe Biden has 36 years of experience...They say Michelle is an angry black woman, she told you EXACTLY who she was this week. They say he's a Muslim, we all know that's a lie because if he was Muslim idiots, why did he attend a Christian church for over 20 years? They said they don't now who he REALLY is...he has repeated his story for everyone thousands of times and even wrote several books! They say he needs to talk about HOW he's gonna help America, He told America in full detail what he plans to do as President. Please, as Obama said last night, ENOUGH!!!! What the hell do they want from him? There's nothing left for him to do EXCEPT eat McCain ALIVE in the debates. I am SO looking forward to Sept. 26th cuz it's goin' DOWN! Obama, once again, is gonna prove again why he's the best choice. One of my favorite lines from last night was "He said he'd follow Osama Bin Laden to the gates of hell...He won't even follow him to the cave that he lives in!" Classic! Obama/Biden '08

Comment: John McCain kept his vice presidential pick a closely guarded secret hours before the high-stakes announcement Friday as top prospects seemed to drop away and speculation moved to darkhorse candidate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Two GOP strategists close to the McCain campaign said all indications pointed to Palin, a self-styled "hockey mom" and political reformer. The strategists spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the McCain camp to discuss the matter. There was no confirmation from McCain or his advisers.
With an announcement scheduled in Dayton, Ohio, an associate of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said the governor had been informed he is not McCain's pick. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for Pawlenty, who had all but ruled himself out.
"I'm not going to be there. I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that," Pawlenty said on his weekly call-in radio show on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis. He also called it "a fair assumption" that he will not be McCain's running mate.
Associates close to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were saying the same thing, telling The Associated Press that the former presidential candidate had not been offered the job by McCain.
Palin is a first-term governor credited with reforms of her out-of-the-way state. Newly minted Democratic nominee Barack Obama is making an aggressive play for the traditional GOP stronghold and its three electoral votes, and polls show the race close.
At 44, Palin is younger than Obama and, like McCain, she calls herself a maverick.
A Gulfstream IV from Anchorage, Alaska, flew into Middletown Regional Airport in Butler County near Cincinnati about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, said Rich Bevis, airport manager. He said several people came off the plane, including a woman and two teens, but there was no confirmation of who was aboard.
"They were pretty much hustled off. They came right down the ramp, jumped in some vans here and off they went," Bevis said. "It was all hush, hush."
Among the other possible running mates: former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and former Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio.

Comment: Source: Sarah Palin is John McCain's pick for vice president
Campaign officials refuse to confirm or deny report
by Jill Zuckman | Tribune staff reporter
8:53 AM CDT, August 29, 2008
A Republican source confirms that John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Campaign officials, however, remain mum this morning.
McCain is expected to announce his choice at a rally in Dayton later.
Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska, elected in 2006. She was also the youngest ever elected at the age of 42. She is the mother of five children, the youngest of whom was born in April and has Down's Syndrome. She ran on a clean government platform in '06 to defeat the incumbent Republican Governor Frank Murkowski.
McCain reportedly considered Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, among others

Comment: In Texas School, Teachers Carry Books and Guns
By JAMES C. McKINLEY JR
HARROLD, Tex. — Students in this tiny town of grain silos and ranch-style houses spent much of the first couple of days in school this week trying to guess which of their teachers were carrying pistols under their clothes.
“We made fun of them,” said Eric Howard, a 16-year-old high school junior. “Everybody knows everybody here. We will find out.”
The school board in this impoverished rural hamlet in North Texas has drawn national attention with its decision to let some teachers carry concealed weapons, a track no other school in the country has followed. The idea is to ward off a massacre along the lines of what happened at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999.
“Our people just don’t want their children to be fish in a bowl,” said David Thweatt, the schools superintendent and driving force behind the policy. “Country people are take-care-of-yourself people. They are not under the illusion that the police are there to protect them.”
Even in Texas, with its tradition of lenient gun laws and frontier justice, the idea of teachers’ taking guns to class has rattled some people and sparked a fiery debate.
Gun-control advocates are wringing their hands, while pro-gun groups are gleeful. Leaders of the state’s major teachers unions have expressed stunned outrage, while the conservative Republican governor, Rick Perry, has endorsed the idea.
In the center of the storm is Mr. Thweatt, a man who describes himself as “a contingency planner,” who believes Americans should be less afraid of protecting themselves and who thinks signs at schools saying “gun-free zone” make them targets for armed attacks. “That’s like saying sic ’em to a dog,” he said.
Mr. Thweatt maintains that having teachers carry guns is a rational response to a real threat. The county sheriff’s office is 17 miles away, he argues, and the district cannot afford to hire police officers, as urban schools in Dallas and Houston do.
The school board decided that teachers with concealed guns were a better form of security than armed peace officers, since an attacker would not know whom to shoot first, Mr. Thweatt said. Teachers have received training from a private security consultant and will use special ammunition designed to prevent ricocheting, he added.

Comment: Johnson’s Dream, Obama’s Speech
By ROBERT A. CARO
AS I watch Barack Obama’s speech to the Democratic convention tonight, I will be remembering another speech: the one that made Martin Luther King cry. And I will be thinking: Mr. Obama’s speech — and in a way his whole candidacy — might not have been possible had that other speech not been given.
That speech was President Lyndon Johnson’s address to Congress in 1965 announcing that he was about to introduce a voting rights act, and in some respects Mr. Obama’s candidacy is the climax — at least thus far — of a movement based not only on the sacrifices and heroism of the Rev. Dr. King and generations of black fighters for civil rights but also on the political genius of Lyndon Baines Johnson, who as it happens was born 100 years ago yesterday.
When, on the night of March 15, 1965, the long motorcade drove away from the White House, heading for Capitol Hill, where President Johnson would give his speech to a joint session of Congress, pickets were standing outside the gates, as they had been for weeks, and as the presidential limousine passed, they were singing the same song that was being sung that week in Selma, Ala.: “We Shall Overcome.” They were singing it in defiance of Johnson, because they didn’t trust him.
They had reasons not to trust him.
In March 1965, black Americans in the 11 Southern states were still largely unable to vote. When they tried to register, they faced not only questions impossible to answer — like the infamous “how many bubbles in a bar of soap?” — but also the humiliation of trying to answer them in front of registrars who didn’t bother to conceal their scorn. Out of six million blacks old enough to vote in those 11 states in 1965, only a small percentage — 27 percent in Georgia, 19 percent in Alabama, 6 percent in Mississippi — were registered.
Name:
oldschoolbrother
Comment: What’s more, those who were registered faced not only beatings and worse but economic retaliation as well if they tried to actually cast a ballot. Black men who registered might be told by their employer that they no longer had a job; black farmers who went to the bank to renew their annual “crop loan” were turned down, and lost their farms. Some, as I have written, “had to load their wives and children into their rundown cars and drive away, sometimes with no place to go.” So the number of black men and women in the South who actually cast a vote was far smaller than the number registered; in no way were black Americans realizing their political potential.
More important, many civil rights leaders felt that President Johnson wasn’t helping them nearly as much as he could have — and that in fact he never had. He had passed a civil rights bill in 1964, but it hadn’t been a voting rights bill.
And they remembered his record, a long record. It was not merely that during his first 20 years, 1937 through 1956, in the House and Senate, he had voted against every civil rights bill — even bills aimed at ending lynching.
Leaders of the civil rights movement who had watched their bills die, year after year, in Congress — not a single civil rights bill had been enacted since 1870 — knew that Johnson had been not merely a voter but a strategist against civil rights, a tactician so successful that Richard Russell of Georgia, the leader of the Senate’s mighty “Southern caucus,” had raised him to power in the Senate, had, in fact, made him his anointed successor as the South’s legislative leader, the young hope of the elderly Southern senators in their desperate battle to maintain racial segregation.
In 1956, by which time Lyndon Johnson was majority leader, he devised and carried out the strategy that had not only crushed a civil rights bill in the Senate by a majority greater than ever before, but had done so in a way that humiliated, in a particularly vicious manner, the liberal senator who refused to bow to his wishes, Paul Douglas of Illinois.
In 1957 he had engineered the passage of a civil rights bill. The mere fact of its passage in the face of Southern senatorial power — it was the first civil rights bill to be enacted in 87 years — made it a significant benchmark in the history of American government, and the guile and determination with which Johnson drove it to passage made it a landmark of legislative mastery as well. But he was forced to weaken it to get it through, and liberals, not understanding the obstacles he had surmounted, blamed him for not making it stronger.

Comment: In a tragic tug of war that could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court, a Staten Island father is desperately fighting for the young daughter surrendered for adoption without his knowledge.
On one side is 21-year-old Kareem Williams, whose four-year battle is at a turning point. On the other is the Queens couple who have cared for the girl since birth.
In the middle is 4-year-old Seasia D., as she's called in court papers, blissfully ignorant of the turmoil swirling around her.
"It feels like hell, trying to get my daughter back for so long," said Williams, a nursing student. "That's my child that's gone. That's my blood."
The drama, detailed in court decisions, began in 2003 when Williams, then 16, had sex with 13-year-old Tenisha Davis at a Staten Island church.
Davis, a former foster-care child, got pregnant. Her adoptive mother spurned Williams' offers to help raise the child and threatened to send Tenisha back to foster care unless she gave up the baby for adoption.
By the time Seasia was born April 1, 2004, she had been promised to a Queens couple - an MTA inspector and his wife - through Family Focus Adoption Services.
Name:
TheQuietGuy
Comment: When Davis signed away her parental rights, the agency didn't give her a lawyer or legal counseling, in violation of state regulations. No one asked Williams for his consent.
The adoptive parents - he's an inspector with the transit agency's counterterrorism task force, and she's a social worker - took the child straight home from the hospital. The Daily News is withholding the names of the pair - he's 41 and she's 42 - because they were not included in the court papers.
The legal skirmish began a few weeks after Seasia's birth when Williams filed a paternity and custody application.
Lower courts ruled in favor of Williams' rights as a father, but this summer, the Court of Appeals, the state's highest, reversed those decisions.
That opened the door for the Queens couple, who paid $15,000 in adoption fees and more in untold legal costs, to go ahead with an adoption petition.
"She's their child," said the couple's lawyer, Deana Balahtsis. "They were there when she was born, and they are the only parents that she has known."
The biological mom wants the couple to have the child. "I didn't have a home when I was little. I want her to do better," said Davis, 18, a high school senior on Long Island. "I couldn't raise my baby at 14
Name:
TheQuietGuy
Comment: Still, she worries that despite the couple's promises, she could be shut out of Seasia's life since she unwittingly agreed to a closed adoption.
That's just one of the problems with a process that may have been badly botched.
There are accusations of conflict of interest, as Balahtsis first represented Davis and then took on the adoptive parents as clients.
Balahtsis shares an address and phone number with Family Focus lawyer Frederick Macgovern, but says she's just a tenant.
Both deny any impropriety.
"If Family Focus had done anything improper or illegal, the Court of Appeals would not have reversed seven-zip," Macgovern said.
Lower courts slammed Family Focus, saying Davis signed adoption papers "under duress." The Court of Appeals disagreed, noting Davis at one point accused Williams of rape, though she later recanted and no charges were filed.
The end of the road for Williams could be Monday, the deadline for appealing the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. If he doesn't come up with $4,000 to cover printing and filing fees, his case is officially over.
"No one should be able to manipulate the process in such a way that a father's right is deprived. That's exactly what happened here. And it happened on so many different levels," said Williams' lawyer, Janet Brown.
"This is a very sad story."

Tavis told them that some people would respond that Obama shouldn't/isn't running as the BLACK candidate, just as a candidate. To me, it was more important for him to 1) say what he will do as President and 2) counter McCain. Plenty of others had mentioned the 45th anniversary all evening long, and John Lewis, Bernice King and MLK III spoke about it. Barack is trying to unite all races and classes and I don't have a need for him to emphasize being Black. What do y'all think?

Comment: Did y'all notice how Barack kept hugging and kissing Michelle at the end? I think he wanted to kiss her on the mouth but they probably figured that would be too much. They love each other and it shows. They are a REAL couple who still have intimacy and mess up sheets! Can you imagine the heat in their bedroom last night? Shoot, if my man just made a big speech like that it would be a 100% certainty he was gettin' broke off that night. What a turn on!

Comment: beyourself - Thanks for the idea, I'm going to look into volunteering to drive the elderly, also. My church is a polling place so they may need some drivers. What a great way to spend Election Day, with my Obama shirt on. /So, your mama did the "invisible" layaways, too? LOL If my mom said she was going to do layaway, I said "Never mind" 'cause I knew I probably wouldn't see it again. However, as an adult I was a layaway queen, and always got my stuff out on time.

Comment: jmho-but no matter what Obama does he will be forever critizied. he didnt mention the speech, he isnt black enough, he doesnt have enough blacks on his staff-im going to go on record and say this now- we all need to look in the mirror before we start to critize. we need to look to this man as one who has a strong chance to lead our country and support him because his walk on the long road ahead will not be easy. These comments are not directed at anyone on the board just general opinion.

Comment: Hey Family!! YES WE CAN!! YES WE CAN!! What a magnificent night last night was. It touched my heart so much to see history unfold. I too, wished that my Grandaddy and others long gone were here to witness this historic event. I remember my Grandaddy told me that back in the 40's, he had to pay a poll tax ($3) to vote, but he made sure he saved the $$ and did so every time he had the opportunity. And he had 7 children and a wife to look after, but made sure he had the $$ to vote in addition to taking care of his family. I love you Big Daddy! RIP. *getting overwhelmed, typing as the tears fall from my eyes* DJ> Happy Birthday Bruh!! Many blessings to you this year and many more.

She has a degree in Communications/Journalism, former beatuy queen, former mayor of a small town with population of 8K, only been gov for 1.5 yrs, first veto was against same sex to have insurance benefits, she's in trouble now for trying to put the squeeze on somone to fire her ex brother in law b/c he divorced her sister. This is going to be good!

Comment: An Atlanta police officer shot and wounded a man Wednesday afternoon on the sidewalk near the Fulton County Courthouse, turning one of the city’s busiest downtown streets into a traffic-halting crime scene, police and witnesses said.
The man, 21-year-old Emanuel Uzowihe, was running from police and pointed a gun at officers after stumbling and falling as he struggled to keep his baggy jeans from falling down, witnesses said. Uzowihe’s injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, Gentile said. No officers or residents were hurt.Evidence of where the incident started and ended remained well into rush hour.
The car Uzowihe had been driving, a white Toyota sedan, sat in the middle of Pryor Street. About 100 yards down the street, a black handgun that police say was Uzowihe’s lay on the sidewalk across the street from the Fulton County Daily Report newspaper.
The chaos drew similarities to the events of March 11, 2005, when authorities say inmate Brian Nichols escaped from a courtroom holding cell and allegedly killed a judge and three others during his escape. He is awaiting trial.
Wednesday afternoon, courthouse employees and other pedestrians watched with curiosity as police cordoned off a two-block stretch of Pryor Street, diverting motorists and delaying some who weren’t allowed to pull their cars out of nearby parking lots.
The shooting occurred about 3:45 p.m., when officers with the department’s Auto Theft Task Force tried to pull over Uzowihe for an undisclosed traffic violation, police Sgt. Lisa Keyes said.
Uzowihe stopped the car, jumped out and ran down the sidewalk, police investigator Anthony Gentile said. At least one officer followed, ordering Uzowihe numerous times to stop, Gentile said.
Police said Uzowihe refused and had a gun in his hand as he ran, though witnesses offered conflicting accounts of when they first saw his firearm.
Witness Darrell Jackson, 42, said the man didn’t have a weapon in his hands when he ran past, cursing to no one in particular. Jackson said he first saw the gun when Uzowihe pointed it at the officer after falling down.

Comment: Another witness, Trevious Grier, said she saw the gun as the man was running.
“He had a long black handgun he was holding in front of him,” Grier said. “I’ve never seen a gun that big before.”
The officer fired at Uzowihe as soon as he pointed the gun, striking the young man twice, police said. Jackson and another witness, Julia Kelly, said Uzowihe fell because he couldn’t keep his baggy pants on his waist.
“He was running pretty fast,” Jackson said. “The only thing that messed him up is he was trying to pull his pants up.”
Said Kelly: “I bet he won’t wear baggy paints again.”

Comment: Yeah, Michelle's dress was too "busy" for me. I didn't even notice her shoes. Her article in the Sept. Ebony is really good. Her mother mentions that Michelle has always been comfortable with her height, 5'11, and that she wears heels. /TQG - I wish I knew about that brother's case earlier, I would have sent a donation for his court fees. It sounds like he and the girl have been mistreated by the lack-of-justice system and manipulated by the adoption agency. Any man who WANTS to be a part of his child's life should be encouraged to do so. Please keep us posted on this story, and I'll keep my eyes out, too.

Comment: Yeah, that brother is getting a raw deal on the child custody. So many young fathers get looked down upon b/c they don't stay and take care of their children, but this young brother is more than willing to step up to the plate and handle his business as demonstrated when he initially filed the petition to get his baby girl. Goodness, gracious, that story really makes me mad and sad at the same time.

Comment: ame- I read the story concerning this young brother and i am floored. here is young man that is trying to be involved and he is getting dissed. It takes to to tango and this young man has a RIGHT to have his child. i dont care if the other folks have raised this child from birth its not their child. I do hope the activists in NYC support this brother in his fight. the scary thing is if it happened to him how many other people ad this happen to them?

Comment: (CNN) -- A bounty hunter said Thursday that he will revoke the bond of a Florida woman suspected in the disappearance of her toddler daughter as new evidence suggests the possibility of a sad outcome in the case.
A law enforcement source with knowledge of the case told CNN affiliate WKMG reporter Jessica D'Onofrio that DNA evidence had matched a strand of hair found in the trunk of a car linked to Casey Anthony with her daughter, Caylee.
On Wednesday, a law enforcement source close to the investigation told CNN investigators have also found chemical evidence of human decomposition in the trunk.
Police were alerted of the car by Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony. At that time, Cindy Anthony told authorities that it smelled as if there had been a dead body in the trunk.
Cindy Anthony has since said she believes that her granddaughter is alive.
