My thing is this - given that this article is in freakin' Newsweek, it would seem to me that "community organizers" there should want to help. Like having a day or two where people volunteer to take whoever to the MVA to get an ID card and then register to vote. Church groups could do it. If it happened here in the MD/DC/VA area, I'd suggest it at my church and my pastor is active enough that I'm sure he'd do it here. MD/DC are pretty much a lock for Obama though, so I don't think we have anything to worry about here. VA, well that's another story. Northern VA may change things and actually pull VA for Obama. We'll see.

There are competing mega-churches here in Naptown that are more concerned with filling church pews and making a lot of Sunday money than worrying about voter registration or topics that will galvanize the Black community. When I grew up the chuch was concerned with saving souls, now it's concerned with earning money. Various churches compete to see how much money they can "preach out of the people". There is one 'minister' here who only accepts "cash money" no checks or credit cards and then he takes the tithing box home. It ain't no wonder that a lot of my socially conscious friends have converted to ISLAM. When Christianity and capitalism got together, they produced an offspring named GREED!!!

I lived in ATL and worked w/a lady that went to Cashflow Dollar's church. She was poor as a churchmouse. She was subbing at the school where I taught. Her kids lived w/their grandma and she gave regularly to the church because they told her that if she gave and gave til it hurts, that she would get a huge financial blessing. month later.

Michelle Obama will trade in her power suit and microphone for an apron and spatula for an upcoming appearance on "Paula's Party," an hour-long cooking show hosted by popular southern chef Paula Deen. The episode will air Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. ET on The Food Network.
During the show, appropriately titled "Grease Is the Word," Deen, Obama and celebrity guests Connie Chung and Maury Povich will share their recipes for such cholesterol-laden goodies as fried shrimp and creole french fries, fried dumplings and fried apple pies. Comment: To Fanteeking & Queeniebunz, giving to the church is not a Man Made rule, it is a requirement from God. If you read in Leviticus & Deuteronomy, the priests weren't allowed to work because they were to solely concentrate on doing the Lord's work and they depended on the generosity of others' "givings" to support and sustain themselves. In addition, when you give, it's not about the giving itself, but about being obedient to the Lord's Word. If you are only GIVING to RECEIVE (as with your co-worker) then you're not giving from your heart and no blessings will come from that. We are not to concern ourselves with what is done with the money we give because we will be rewarded for obeying God's word. And lastly, Christianity and all churches **should not be lumped together**. If you don't feel comfortable about who or where you're giving your money to, than by all means you should find another congregation to worship. To me what's the difference from the person who posted something about their funds being low and/or some of their friend's being unemployed but they sacrifice to give to Obama???? Sometimes, giving is about sacrifice but as with anything, you have to use discernment.

He wasn't concerned with feathering his nest at the expense of those who suffered. If you want to give your offerings to a jackleg who wants to buy a Lear Jet, a lives in a multi-million dollar mansion and who has millions in the bank and wouldn't give you a piece of bread then you go right ahead. I'd rather follow the religious leader who'd stoop to give bread and water to a leeper who everyone passed by on the road to Damascus. You have your right to give and I have my right to question.

I am talking about ministers who sell a pipe dream and tell their flock that they will be blessed beyond all comprehension if they give til it hurts - like it's the freakin' lotto or something. They actually attempt to get their parishioners to believe that if they give extra they'll stumble upon a fortune and that ain't so. Sure people get blessings when they need it but I am sure it doesn't come from giving their mortgage payment to a crooked minister. It's absolutely ridiculous to give to the church instead of paying your light bill so you can get more money. God helps those that help themselves.

When someone tells me something, I don't necessarily take their word for it, I want to read it for myself cause as you may very well know, people lean to their own interpretation. I attended Creflo's church once with a friend when I visited ATL and I didn't find his sermon to be overly overt towards monetary giving at that particuliar service, so I can't attest to him per se. What I can say is that I don't believe God's intends for everyone to be rich or it would be so. I, like you find that my money tends to stretch as well because I give, not to receive, but because it's what required of me. Now on the other hand, I know people who make a boat load of money, they don't give and they are always financially strapped so in essence they are no better off than a poor person. I also agree, I don't believe a person should give their car note and not have a car, which may be their only means to get to work, that's where discernment comes in. God gives people common sense.
