Huey, in that case he and Marion should be together FOREVER!

Comment: Didn't he have a baby with Marion Jones? I feel so sorry for the child starting his/her life with parents in prison. It's so sad.

Comment: Yes Fanteeking, he did (would have been nice if EUR had included that tidbit, huh?). And I was thinking the same thing about their child, having two convicts for parents. But one consolation, I think Marion Jones is out now.

Comment: Actually I could see him not having a job. In college, athletes aren't allowed to work, correct? Then, once he hit it big, his "job" was to run and he was supported by endorsements, right? Correct me if I'm wrong because I always thought it odd that these athletes travel the world competing but then I just assumed they lived off sponsorships/endorsements. Please correct me. In any case, it's very very sad. As others have said, he and Marion's child has a very sad start? Who will work to support the child? From my understanding, Marion Jones is in debt up to her eyeballs. What a big ole mess. Doesn't she have 2 children?

Comment: I will say this - regarding the steroid use - I think they all use them. All of them. I just think some are very clever. You can't tell me that Flo Jo didn't die as a result of long term steroid use. You can't tell me that because I wouldn't believe it. She looked like a dude in a weave. I idolized her as many others did but I still have always thought she used steroids. The thing is, they have to use them because everyone else is using them and if they don't, they won't win. This Bolt guy - I'm not sure. I'm sure they're all in his bidness trying to make sure he's clean. I hope he is because he was my highlight of this year's Olympic Games. Bump Phelps. Sure he did kick butt by taking all of those medals but I thought Bolt stole the show because nobody really saw him coming.

Comment: Someone made an intereting observation a while back saying that even though Phelps won 8 gold medals, Bolt could have won 8 or 9 or more if they had a 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 meter sprints and the 400, 500 and 600 meter relays. It makes sense to me.

Comment: >Angel - now that I don't know of course. I agree. I guess he's a cautionary tale for future professional runners. They really need to have a "Plan B" because 1) they will eventually fade and lose their speed, and 2) they may never get to the level of a Bolt and they have to have something solid to land on if/when running stops sustaining them. Everybody in track and field isn't going to be a Michael Johnson. Their coaches in college should be preparing them for the future in some kind of way. I wonder this - how many track and field athletes actually graduate? I know in football and basketball the graduation rate is decreasing.

Comment: Queeniebunz: you're right... professional runners definitely need a Plan B. I'll take it a step further and say that ALL pro athletes need a Plan B. Their promising career could end instantly with an injury, and if they haven't developed any other skills, what then? Most athletes don't have the charisma or speaking ability to be sportscasters. And even fewer have what it takes to be an actor. So they're gonna sell smack for a living? Crazy.

Comment: I agree with you Queenie, but I must add that this should be a cautionary tale to PARENTS!!! I see so many parents out there pushing their kids towards sports which is great because I believe sports can teach a lot about discipline and goals etc. HOWEVER, they should also push academics and have a well-rounded child--young adult--adult...because some of these athletes know nothing else but their particular sport and when things go wrong they have no idea how to go about making a living and turning to dealing etc. Now, I know that's no excuse--as an adult, you ought to know better, but it would be helpful if from the beginning they understood about planning for their future after sports without trying for the quick buck...

Comment: >vroger2 - I agree. You're right. They all do. I was close to a few ball players and runners at UMCP and they told me point blank that the coaches don't give a flying f*ck about anything but winning. Preparing them for the future isn't a concern. All the coaches cared about was winning in the here and now. The athletes had to worry about that themselves. By the same token, I taught at Gaithersburg HS in Md. I had a student who told me that his coach passed him through football season and then flunked him ultimately when the season was over. It happens pre-college, too. Athletes and their parents need to wise up. This has been happening for decades. It shouldn't be happening now. There are too many cautionary tales. I will say this - to my knowledge, many athletes going pro take out insurance on their persons as soon as they know they're going pro in case something happens. That's smart and gives them a cushion in case of an injury. I think athletes forget that it's not ever about them. It's about winning and endorsements and sponsorships and if you are't winning and bringing in the cheddar, you get dropped.

Comment: Jamerdelta - I agree. But you have to really look at some of the parents. Allen Iverson's mother - off da hook. Anytime you name your second son Mr. Allen Iverson, that says it all. She's not the brightest crayon in the box and she's ghetto as heyall. A lot of the athletes are raised by single mothers who really don't know much about anything, just survival. Those are the ones who really don't have the foundation/common sense/education to properly prepare their children. It is still their responsibility but you can't count on parents like that at all.

Comment: JamerDelta/Queeniebunz: Yaw both are sho-nuff right. I played college basketball and the first day on campus, the coach gathered all the BLACK basketball players in a room and demanded that we major in physical education so that the coaches could "look out for us". I refused because I went to an excellent ALL-BLACK high school and had good grades and SAT scores. Some of my basketball mates could barely read and write. Also, the coach told us whenever we decided to date "there were some nice, clean colored girls in east Denver near the 5 points. Get my drift?
