Comment: My nephew's b'day party was Saturday. Now I was the only black person there, as my brother is white (we have different dads) and he married a white woman. Her parents are die-hard Republicans with liberal leanings that are inexplicable. They told my sister-in-law to get an abortion when she had my niece because the child's bio-dad is black (not my brother). They also believe in the government stepping in to help businesses and they also believe in raising taxes. I know - confusing but not so confusing when yo consider that people tend to put their pro-life leanings aside when they find out their child has reproduced with a black man. To a die-hard racist, killing a 1/2 black child ain't really a bad thing...So anyway, my brother took som pictures of my sister-in-law's cousin and in a few she wore glasses. I said she had the whole "Sarah Palin" look. She looked at me funny so I had to qualify it by saying "I think Palin's pretty. She is. That wasn't an insult. If I had said you SOUND like Palin, that would be the insult". So she was okay with that. So anyway, from there, we had a mini conversation about politics and pretty much everyone agreed that Palin was an airhead. Now my brother has warned me to not discuss politics with his Republican in-laws present and I don't. I was just commenting on fashion and didn't mean to "go there" but the other relatives took off with it and started talking about what a nut Palin is. Everyone else is for Obama except my brother's in-laws. I think his wife may be for McCain, too but we don't "go there" because we just don't. I love her and everything and she has a 1/2 black child and everything but she and her parents are straight closet racists. So anyway, there we were talking about Obama and here comes the mother-in-law and she says, "The one you have to worry about is his wife, Michelle!" and nobody said anything to that because it was a child's b'day party and all we were really talking about was the whole glasses look. But I was like WTF?! I wanted to know so badly what she meant but I knew I couldn't ask and I didn't. I say all of that to say that white people come up with some f*cked up azzed ideas that are so off the wall but they truly have deluded themselves into believing them. As far as I'm concerned, anybody who stands up for McCain has screws loose. His healthcare platform alone is enough to make anybody run for the Democrat ticket. I just don't get it. But there you have it. People really do believe the BS the McCain people are putting out there. In my opinion, it's not because they really believe it. It's because they can't stand the idea of this country being led by a black man. So sad. I try not to be in the room with such ignorance but in the case of my brother and his wife's family it is unavoidable.

If I had gone to the party knowing full well all of the dynamics you mentioned, I wouldn't have alluded to anything political because as you know there are three things you don't talk about in a party environment -- politics, sex, and religion. Either of these topics are pretty quick way to turn a rather jovial and celebratory occasion into the express train to Hades.

There are family dynamics at play here that are do jacked up that I have to keep my silence. The whole situation is just ridiculous. Her parents pretty much "own" my brother. He defers to them out of financial necessity. It totally sucks but that's the reality of it. In a power struggle between them and me, I'd be the loser every time so I consider not being in the lives of my niece and nephews and it's not worth it. They love me and I love them so that's what I focus on. With all the nasty talk towards black people that I'm sure takes place in front of the children, they need to be around black people to see that what their grandparents are saying is bullsh*t. That's the priority.

In August, my best friend from college threw a "Watch Party". I was like WTF? It was a party to watch Obama's acceptance speech at the DNC. I was like, okay, cool. I'd never heard of a watch party. I was like, is this like a Tupperware party or whatever? Anyway, at the party, we got to talking and one girl, black from Kansas, said she was Republican. I was like, "There are places you can go for help with that condition." And everybody laughed because it was all good and she understood that whatever party she belongs to is her perogative and I respect that (- as long as she votes for Obama)...But that's what it's all about. You can be yourself and state your case and argue and be in opposition and still be respectful. It doesn't always have to be a rabid, vitriolic nasty situation to disagree about a topic. But I know that with my brother's in-laws it would be ugly and that's a shame.
