I am starting my count down for Sarah Palin to take her moose eating azz back to Alaska and plan her teenage daughter's wedding and baby shower.
All of those people who still say Obama pals around with terrorist are idiots. Do they think Colin Powell, General, Chairman of the Joint chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor and Secretary of State would endorse him if there was any doubt. Those who still doubt never planned to vote for him anyway.

Comment: Bingo, HT, that "transformational" thing is [purposely] taken out of context by simple-minded, racist White folk ala Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. They've been waiting for a while to trash this man's character and now here's their big opportunity. My thoughts: 1) I've never been a big Powell fan, always saw him as a too concilliatory yes-man and I esp didn't care for him when he went in front of the UN and knowingly lied through his damn teeth about WMD, being an accomplice to Bush and co's evil. So for that, he'll never get a pazz from me. That said though, I teared up when listening to his interview on MTP yesterday, esp the part about the Muslim soldier whose mom was at his gravesite. I was surprised at how much the passionate way he spoke about it moved me. And beyond that, I was also pleasantly surprised not only at the rousing endorsement he gave BO (he did not play it safe like he usually does, he was passionate), but also at the indictment of Cain and Moose's campaign. He tore them a new one yesterday, he really did. I was proud of him. 2) I was disappointed yet again in Brokaw's interviewing style. He found it necessary to stir the convo back to race more than once. I just really, really can't stand him.

The media is so busy playing mixmaster with the news it's totally ignoring the discontent in that party and the intent of some of it's members. Colin still has a huge following of folks that trust and respect him and while I don't think any of them are made of teflon - there is no backlash that can be thrown at Colin Powell that would make a damned bit of difference and not only because he's a private citizen but because he is a public speaker and has let his disgust of the last 8 years be known. They knew it was coming but still held out hope that he would vote his party. Because of their loss and the real numbers being low for McShame - it's in their best interest to take a couple of steps back and regroup and not throw any mud his way - that would cease his circling of the bowl and he would surely go down!

Comment: I don’t want to throw cold water on the Powell endorsement, it’s a big one, but Obama still faces a monumental task to overcome the Republican voter purges, ID requirements, foreclosure caging lists, minority targeted provisional ballots, and don’t forget the machines. Ohio may have removed them, but they are still big in Florida and other places. Take a look at the article on the EUR front page “Voter Registration Snafus threaten eligibility.” This is all part of the Help America Vote Act which bush created to legitimize these tactics. It may now be a case of too little too late. The time to address these problems was much earlier, with Democrats doing what secretary of state Jennifer Brunner did in Ohio. A ten point lead in the polls may be too little to overcome the Republican vote stealing machinery. stealbackyourvote.org.

They want you to recite a disclaimer (i.e. "This is not about race) every time a black person voices support for Obama. We allow this by giving them an explanation as if we are children who "should know better". GTFOH! Never mind that so many other black politicians wouldn't have fallen by the wayside as they have *if* we as a people voted simply based on skin. They still ask us to be held accountable as if we owe THEM something. The amount of disrespect we have to handle is staggering. Comment: Race is not a factor in Powell's endorsement of Obama. Powell is a "maverick", thinking independently and beyond his party lines, so there's no way the Repubs should be hating because "maverick" has been a recurring theme throughout the McCain/Palin campaign. So based on this logic, the McCain supporters should respect Powell's endorsement of Obama, after all he's a maverick isnt he?

Comment: Back in Feb., 2007 when I began my work on Senator Obama's campaign as a volunteer, I stated from 'day one' that he would win the presidency based on the hysteria I was witnessing from his many newfound supporters. At the time, many on this site and in this country could not comprehend such a far-fetched possibility, and there were certainly the naysayers who didn't think he was "black enough," that YT would never vote a black man into office, or that he could ever withstand the pressure of much of America's love affair with Hillary and Bill. I had the honor to personally talk with Senator Obama on two occasions when I worked at rallys in Las Vegas (2/18/07) and then in Los Angeles (2/20/07). Both times, he held my hand as he talked with me, and that still quiet voice inside told me then that I was standing in the realm of greatness and that Barack Obama would be our next President of the United States. And so now, a long, tedious 20 months later, I am not surprised that Colin Powell has finally come forward to announce his all-important endorsement at such a critical moment. It was supposed to happen just this way as the devil stood off in the wings continuing to beat a dead horse with blatant, rehashed lies and negative accusations to detract from vital issues. So, my peeps, who I absolutely admire for the way you have passionately supported our soon-to-be Commander-in-Chief, as we draw closer to a historical Nov. 4, which will be a day of indescribable celebration, let us all vow to continue our support through fervent prayer for Barack Obama, that he have a safe and successful journey throughout the world to restore hope and respectability to a country that has been run into the ground by an arrogant, greedy and non-caring administration. Do whatever you have to do to get involved in your communities. Even the smallest of efforts can mean a lot... reach out and get involved because Obama's pending election, in two weeks, is just the beginning of a mighty uphill climb he'll have to make, and he's going to need our help. It's the right thing to do!!!

Comment: Another unrelated article: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/10/oba ma-race.html Not to toot this guy's horn too much, lol, but I just gotta say in so many ways he sets a great example. Here he is a shining example of "overcoming evil with good" like the Good Book says. Excerpt: Sen. Barack Obama entered the barbecue joint where an older and majority white clientele of dozens was eating lunch after church services. At the other end of the restaurant, Diane Fanning, 54, who works at a discount club, began yelling: “Socialist, socialist, socialist -– get out of here...Later, Obama came to the long table where Fanning and other members of a local First Presbyterian church were gathered. He held out his hand to her to shake it and asked, “How are you, ma’am?” but she declined to shake." Is that not awesome, how he went to shake that trick's hand even after she mocked and abused him? I mean, wow. Okay, just wanted to share that...

Comment: TGen and others, I also was moved by Colin Powell's rousing endorsement and simultaneous dismissal of the 'Cain-Moose Hate strategy. I believe what you saw was a man who neither recognized nor supported the way in which his party demonstrated their open intolerance and hatred of anyone who was not white. And notwithstanding the Iraq war decision and UN speech, Powell has won a place of respect for me. He did in about 7 minutes (in the clip included) what people have been trying to express for several months. He covered every issue ('Cain and Moose's ugly campaign, Palin's lack of readiness to be POTUS, the robocalls, the Ayers nonsense, Obama's readiness, 'Cain's erraticness, transformational leadership of Obama, the need for Obama on the world stage, etc.) And for "literalists" like Queenie and me, his straight forward way of FIRST answering the question directly THEN expounding on the answer was a breath of fresh air from the typical politician response ('Rak included) of not answering the question and yet talking for longer than needed. Truthfully, looking at Powell yesterday made me realize what we missed out of in a man who in 2000 could have been our first President who was a Black man. Kudos to you Colin Powell.

Because that's what this whole "voter fraud" foofara is about. John McCain and Sarah Palin and Lou Dobbs and the rest of the right-wing torch brigade that have been after ACORN and the Ohio Secretary of State aren't concerned about protecting people's right to vote -- and in fact, their efforts largely go toward directly stripping citizens of their legitimate voting rights. ___
Or more precisely, this is all about building a post-election narrative aimed at delegitimizing a Barack Obama presidency by claiming he won fraudulently. It's not just a handy excuse for the %*$-kicking they deserve -- it's a whole right-wing conspiracy-theory cottage industry in the making that will nurture their paranoia and rage for years down the road."

Comment: Reds, you said "Obama still faces a monumental task to overcome the Republican voter purges, ID requirements, foreclosure caging lists, minority targeted provisional ballots, and don’t forget the machines. Ohio may have removed them, but they are still big in Florida and other places." Florida still has machines but a state law post the 2004 elections required the use of a machine with a paper trail. Voters in Florida now vote on a fill in the bubble sheet (scan tron) and then insert that ballot once filled out into the machine where it is instantly scanned. I'm volunteering to be a pollwatcher for the Obama campaign and there is a verification process where the elections clerk at each polling station must verify and reconcile the number of votes cast during the day's voting. It would be difficult (not impossible) for votes to be miscounted or undercounted. Florida's Secretary of State also issued an opinion that election clerks will not be permitted to verify addresses so long as a voter has a certain picture ID and an ID containing a signature (they could be the same ID). The address on the ID does not have to match the voter address.

Comment: SS69054, you think it's "great news" that Powell will be in an Obama administration? You think Powell has earned the right to be the head of anything ever again? After he LIED and people DIED because of his lies, leading to the illegal invasion of Iraq? Seriously? I appreciate his endorsement and I think he articulated his support better than maybe anyone else has to date, but I will not give him a pazz beyond that. Some say this endorsement had more to do with his trying to make up for the hit his reputation took after his pushing the illegal Iraq invasion, than anything else. I don't think that is a stretch, in fact it's very plausible. For some reason Powell gets a pazz from most people (like in that "W" movie we saw this past weekend, which was BORING as heck btw) despite his being complicit in one of the biggest okey-dokes ever perpetuated on this country...but not from me. No, I give him props for being on the right side of history this time, but not too long ago he was on the wrong side, and I have not forgotten. I just hope we don't get carried away here...

Comment: I wanted to share a funny story I heard the other day. In Ohio, we can vote early, and when I went to the cast mine, I ran into an old friend who is working there. I asked her how the turnout was so far, and she said it has been really great. But she said girl, you should have been here the day Sen Obama spoke across the street. First of all there were about 50K people in attendance, and the rally was held right across the street from where you can vote here in the city. So, my gf said it was so funny because you would have thought Sen Obama told them that when the rally is over you go across the street and vote, b/c she said when he was done speaking, they were bombarded with people. The problem is that we have a significant Somali and Ethiopian population but many are not citizens. She said those people could not understand that they were not allowed to vote. Many of them rationlized that the president of the U.S. is a world leader, and they should be able to at least vote for that position, without being able to vote on local and state issues. It was funny, sad and exciting too.

Comment: TGen, I think you're being a bit hard on Powell. Like you, I believe that the Iraq War was perhaps the nation's biggest mistake outside of slavery and government-assisted discrimination. But there is at least an argument that Powell believed the intelligence. While you and I believe that the evidence was thin to nonexistent, let's keep in mind that at the time prior to the Iraq invasion there were many in the intelligence community (including Great Britain's intelligence community) in Congress who believed that Iraq had WMDs. Even Hans Blix, the man who led the UN effort to investigate and report on Iraq's WMDs or lack of WMDs didn't definitively conclude that Iraq didn't have WMDs. They merely concluded that they couldn't find any and that Saddam Hussein was playing cat and mouse games or not allowing them entry in places where they wanted to look while running caravans of suspicious trucks and vehicles out of every place they were permitted access. Even if Iraq had WMDs I didn't see that as reason to go to war, but let's not in our haste to balance the gravity of Colin Powell's endorsement do the Monday morning quarterback thing. I don't know whether he lied to the UN. There is enough evidence to suggest that he believed the intelligence (though mistakenly). My point is that neither of us knows with any kind of certainty which one it was.

Hopefully, Obama will seek Powell's assistance with the Iraq pullout.

Comment: No Exmun, YOU don't know whether he lied. I, however, know with absolutely certainty that he did. It's interesting you cite Hanz Blix, someone who spoke AGAINST invading, wanting more time to find the supposed WMD's. He is maybe the clearest symbol of Bush and co's deviancy, they were going to war in Iraq REGARDLESS of the intelligence, and the intelligence they used was cooked up by the agencies by the AGENCIES' OWN ADMISSION now. Powell went up there and read a college term paper from years before, disguised it as current, and talked about how "imminently" we must "strike back," (strike back at WHAT, who knows? cuz Bin Laden was still roaming free at the time, hmmm). No, there were record protests all over the world, the people who had supposedly attacked us were still at large, and the case for invading a sovreign nation was weak, weak, weak. Dude gets NO pazz from me. Again, I applaud his endorsement, but he is not innocent, by any stretch of the imagination.

Comment: I too thought of that Sambo Harris and other Black Republicans like him. The memory of Harris grinning amongst a seas of racists, like he was OJ being forgiven by White folks, was beyond pathetic. Having said that, Colin Powell is an example, to me, why that 'Black people are voting for Obama because he's Black' is a ridiculous theory. One, Black people would probably be voting for whoever the Democrat was anyway. But secondly, if Barack Obama was a Republican, not only would I never vote for him, but he would've never gotten the nomination. I would have never voted for Colin Powell over Bill Clinton, back in 96' when people were trying to get Powell to run. And yet while I haven't forgotten Powell's role in Bush's war, he was very eloquent yesterday on 'Meet The Press'. He simply broke it down and it just comes down to this: no halfway, intelligent person of any color, could be for McCain, or approve of his campaign strategy. And fat azz Rush and his ilk are taking bold steps talking about him. Because talking about Powell is 'questioning the judgment' of their great hero Ronald Reagan. It's also questioning the judgment of George Bush Sr, who is thought more highly of than his trifling son. Then again, I'd be shocked sh**tle**s if Rush didn't make some stupid comment about the endorsement. Lastly, Rush and his loser crowd, are proof that they really don't know any Black Republicans. I mean REALLY know them. Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas, Joseph C. Phillips, that Sambo Harris and others, would never just vote for someone just because they're Black. Black Republicans just don't think like that.

Comment: What I find funny is all the Republican spokespeople who come on MSNBC (I don't like CNN) and try to downplay Powell's endorsement. "Oh, well, he's not campaining for him, so it's no big deal." "Powell did it because they're both black." Blah, blah, blah. They wouldn't be saying it didn't mean anything if he had endorsed that old nasty lying cracker named McCain. And McCain is so friggin' jealous of Barack's having raised in excess of $150 million last month, that now he wants to imply that it's scandalous. He just doesn't know what to do with himself. He's just so envious of Obama. I truly believe this is Barack's destiny. Noone and nothing that has come against him has succeeded. And they have tried EVERYTHING. McCain clearly didn't learn from Hillary's mistakes, so let him keep making them.

Comment: TGEN..I would venture to say that ire against those who voted for the war was for those who continued to support the war after it's invasion seemingly w/out any remorse. The biggest example of such would be John Edwards and Hillary Clinton. Both voted for the war, only the latter had the decision firmly planted around her neck. So him being complicit in "some people's eyes" is no greater or worse than the democrats (Hillary Clinton) who supported it and people apparently gave her a pazz. BTW, Pat Buchanan (as expected) on y'day said that after everything the republicans did for Powell like giving him the JChief of Staff, he turned his back on the party and voted for Obama because he was black. Pretty shameful but not surprising.

But seriously, to maintain the strong offense he's playing right now, he'll need quite a bit of it in the last week of this campaign. As far as Powell's endorsement goes, it will (a) help the Republicans who have already decided to support Barack feel better and more firm in their decision, and (b) push many Independents and fence-sitting Republicans over to Obama.

Comment: TGen, for all of your passionate certainty that Colin Powell lied, you offer little in terms of proof. You don't know what was in Powell's mind then any more than I do. So let's get some balance on the issue. Like you, I believe that his complicity in assisting "W" to prosecute the Iraq war is perhaps his biggest lapse of judgment. But for anyone to suggest that they know that he "lied" without anything more than earnest speculation is the height of arrogance. Most Democrats in Congress voted to authorize war in Iraq. The United Nations in several resolutions indicated a hardened belief that Iraq had WMDs. Even if all of that were true, I still don't think that was a good enough reason to wage war. So Powell, in my book, still bears the backside of that flaw in his judgment. But I'm not going to demonize Powell as you do just to prove a point. He wasn't the only one involved in the decision to go to war. He was one of the players who had influence over the process. But there were many others who played a role including Democrats (Biden, Clinton, Edwards) virtually the entire Bush cabinet, the complicit media, the vast majority of the American public (much of it misinformed). To single out Powell is doing the Monday morning quarterback routine.

Comment: McCain said he disagrees with Powell that Obama is qualified, yet at the end of his little roast at a function both he and Obama were at last week (the video is on E! Network's website) he gave a little praise to Obama. Also, I heard on Bill Maher's show that Palin's husband belongs or belonged to some group in Alaska that is anti-American, yet nobody in the media had said anything about it. As Bill Maher said on his show, where is the media attention about this? Where is the outrage? I guess people in Alaska are scared to talk for fear of Gov. Palin's rath, something the media has said before about how she operates.

Growing up in the south I've seen the best and the worst of them (yt folks). It's most unfortunate yet factual that most of the southern states still hold on to some conservative values. Comment: kwrob, what you're referring to is Todd Palin's membership in the AIP, Alaskan Indepence Party--a group whose sole purpose is to have Alaska secede from the United States as an independent nation. The founder (Vogler) has, prior to his death, said some of the most heated and terroristic statements about the United States. While Palin runs around accusing Obama of "palling around with terrorists" given his very above board and limited association with Bill Ayers, Palin was literally "sleeping with the enemy." But I believe what you raise is the dramatic difference between Democrats and Republicans. Say what you want to say about Rethuglians, they will fight for theres. The media won't cover the AIP story because no Democrat of any repute will actually make a public statement about it. Dems. in leadership are scared of the fight. So they stay silent about it, like they run scared from a lot of other fights. And the media is even more scaredy cat than the Dems. They won't do their own independent research and investigative journalism. They'd rather run fluff pieces about candidates' personal lives while ignoring anything remotely controversial. And that Palin woman has gotted a free white woman pass on this, so there you go.

Comment: Slideshow: Sen. Barack Obama Play Video Video: Preston on Politics CNN Play Video Video: Campaign '08: Obama To Rally With Clinton CBS 2 New York AP – In this photo provided by NBC, Meet The Press, shows former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell speaking … WASHINGTON – Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.
"He will have a role as one of my advisers," Barack Obama said on NBC's "Today" in an interview aired Monday, a day after Powell, a four-star general and President Bush's former secretary of state, endorsed him.
"Whether he wants to take a formal role, whether that's a good fit for him, is something we'd have to discuss," Obama said.
Being a top presidential adviser, especially on foreign policy, would be familiar ground to Powell on a subject that's relatively new to the freshman Illinois senator. Obama has struggled to establish his foreign policy credentials against GOP candidate John McCain, a decorated military veteran, former prisoner of war and ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Comment: In the NBC interview, Obama said Powell did not give him a heads-up before he crossed party lines and endorsed the Democratic presidential candidate on the network's "Meet the Press" a day earlier.
In that interview, Powell called Obama a "transformational figure" in the nation's history and expressed disappointment in some of McCain's campaign tactics. But, Powell said, he didn't plan to hit the campaign trail with Obama before the Nov. 4 election.
"I won't lie to you, I would love to have him at any stop," Obama said with a grin Monday. "Obviously, if he wants to show up he's got an open invitation."
Powell's endorsement came just hours after Obama's campaign disclosed that it raised $150 million in September — obliterating the old record of $66 million it had set only one month earlier.
He expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain's campaign, his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate and their decision to focus in the closing weeks of the contest on Obama's ties to 1960s-era radical William Ayers, saying "it goes too far."
McCain, meanwhile, seemed dismissive of Powell's endorsement, saying it wasn't a surprise, that the two share mutual respect and are longtime friends.
The Republican from Arizona pointed out on Sunday that he had support from four other former secretaries of state, all veterans of Republican administrations: Henry Kissinger, James A. Baker III, Lawrence Eagleburger and Alexander Haig.

Comment: At a boisterous rally Sunday, Obama said McCain was "out of ideas and almost out of time."
He and his aides appear so confident of his prospects that apart from a brief stop in Madison, Wis., next Thursday, Obama currently has no plans during the next 10 days to return to Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Hampshire or any other state that voted for John Kerry in 2004.
Instead, he intends to spend two days this week in Florida, where early voting begins on Monday, and travel to Virginia, Iowa, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico and possibly Nevada and Indiana. Those states hold 97 electoral votes combined, and Bush won all in 2004.
Obama also may stop in West Virginia, where his campaign recently bought statewide television advertising in a late attempt to put the state's five electoral votes into serious contention.

It's contradictory for BO to tout Powell's praises on one hand and lambast the war he helped start on the other. Does that better reach your bar of truth? But on your other point, WHO IS SINGLING OUT POWELL??? He happens to be the SUBJECT of this thread, that's why I focused on him. But I have NEVER given a pazz to anyone who supported that war, included complicit Democrats (they should ALL be thrown out imo), the media, etc. NEVER gave them a pass, ever. And let me say for the record, this is something that troubles me about BO. I've wondered more than once (esp after his vp pick) if he stood against the war more because it was politically expedient to do so, or because of principle. I've honestly wrestled with that notion. So as of yet, even BO doesn't get a pass just yet. I hope he will do the right thing once in office, but he still has some convincing to do, for me anyway...

There still will be issues with voter identification. As an Obama pollwatcher we are looking at how the election clerks are going to try to get around the law on voter IDs. The nicknames thing that you raised is an important issue, especially in the hispanic community where their use of maiden names and family surnames is a bit different than how many other Americans use these names. Comment: This is some info I found on the AIP:
The Alaskan Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of Alaska that advocates a state vote which includes several options, including strong beliefs in Federalism, limited government, and territorial status.
It has been alleged that some of its members in the past have also proposed that the state explore the possibility of joining Canada. Some other members have expressed opposition to joining Canada in its present form but are open to the possibility of joining an independent Western Canadian state comprising the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
In 1973 Joe Vogler began arguing about the validity of the Alaskan statehood vote. Early in that year, he began circulating a petition seeking support for secession of Alaska from the United States.
Vogler has been quoted as stating "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."[4] [5]
The AIP is listed as an affiliate of the Constitution Party on the latter party's website.[2]
Todd Palin controversy
On September 2, 2008, the Associated Press reported that the Alaska Division of Elections said that Todd Palin, the husband of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, had registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party in 1995 and 2002; he no longer is registered as a member of the party, having registered as "undeclared" since 2002.[7] Sarah Palin was never a member of the Alaska Independence Party, and has been a member of the Republican Party since 1982.[8]

Comment: I think when Colin Powell had to tell those lies about WWMD in Iraq, he was so riddled with guilt and he knew Bush's real motive and he was like, I'm out...George Bush is on TV every week trying to explain how and why we're reliving the great depression and you have to really ask yourself, does he give a flying f@uck??? Why should he care what happens to the American people and the economy that he messed up with this bogus war? Its so simple, while funding that unnecessary war, the government was taking money from everywhere and finally they ran out... Bush won't need to worry about a job, a mortgage, money in the bank...so why should he care...however, it must suck to go down in history as the worst president this country has ever seen!

Comment: TGen, neither you nor I need to debate the issue of whether Iraq posed an imminent threat. Powell said this himself in his Meet the Press interview yesterday. Paraphrasing, he said that absent the WMD issue, Iraq did not pose an imminent threat to the US. I agree with him (and you if that's your position). My simple point has not been about giving him a pass. I blame him for his participation in the Bush administration at a critical time for him to have used his gravitas to persuade the President that even if this WMD thing were true, this is still not a good reason to go to war. I still blame his decision on the Iraq war, WMD issue notwithstanding. His hands are not clean. My point is that you're saying what he knew, and none of us can know that so let's talk about what we really know with more certainty. What I can say with certainty, is that on yesterday, Powell stood taller by laying out centrist/Republican reasons why Obama is a better choice for today's world. And for that I give him props, just like he lost points on the Iraq thing. But let's not get lost in our hatred of Bushism to not realize that for the better part of the 90s, the U.S. was engaged in fighting in Iraq, pre "W's War." Gulf War I and the enforcement of no-fly zones by Clinton. Still I disagreed with the decision to go to war like no other, but I'd rather pass off facts as fact and make clear where things diverge into strong opinion.

I also have guarded optimism towards the Powell endorsement. Winning an election is all about appealing to a small group of voters, those inclined to sit on the fence, crossover voters, those who vote Red one election and blue the other. This group is mainly made up of whites. It is this group which accounts for the wild swings in the polls. A lot of them that are now leaning to Obama, may see the Powell endorsement as race based, and as previous Republican voters, some may even be offended. Bear in mind that this endorsement will have no effect whatsoever on the base of either party.

If that's the gauge you are using then Clinton and all of the other democrats should receive no "praise" from Obama because they voted for the war and Obama doing so would be contradictory as well. That's an odd criticism. If you listen to those vested at that time, there was no political benefit to Obama voting against the war. Even his critics criticize him for voting against it when it was of no consequence. I'm surprised you haven't heard that be talked about to the extent it has been.

Exmun, like I said, our OPINIONS will not intersect. Yours seems to lean towards giving Powell the benefit of the doubt, mine is opposite. We see the events leading to the war very differently (though we agree that it was unnecessary), but I'm just not in the business of being fake about it: it's cool he's supporting BO, but he still belongs on trial for war crimes right alongside Bush, Cheyney, Rumsy, Rice, et al. Musb, I don't follow you. I said nothing of BO praising Powell, I said I had a problem with Powell being in the administration. Also, BO didn't vote against the war. He spoke out against it, which I've always applauded, and it's actually what made me start to support him. However, in his political circle at the time, being against the Iraq war was the expedient thing to do. I would take nothing away from his BRILLIANT speech if I was 100% certain that he gave the speech from a place of principle. 90% of me believes he did, but the other 10% wonders how he could choose an Iraq war supporter like Biden and talk about having someone like Powell in his administration. It just...doesn't...fit. But like I said, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach.

I said nothing of BO praising Powell, I said I had a problem with Powell being in the administration."..*scratching head* IMO, not having Powell in his adminstration over the war issue should also eliminate every other politician who voted in favor of the war as well should it not? I think I'm up to speed on the pre/post war stuff but I'll concede your point if you can simply direct me to any article, qoute, etc. that suggests being "anti-war" was the politically expedient position to take. IMO, being politically expedient means doing something not favored by the majority. Hagel voted against the war, I doubt if he considered it the politically expedient thing to do. It's difficult to be 100% certain about what nebody says..especially a politician. BTW, I'm sure Obama had his reasons for choosing Biden but if I can recall, Kaine (your orginal VP choice) also supported the war. Should he be banished from an Obama adminstration too?

Comment: IMO, It says a lot when the man who was so vocal during the beginning of the Iraq war, endorses someone who is oppose to it. It says that, the war has been surpassed by everything else going wrong in our country. That's McCain's biggest problem he can''t seem to let go of this war thing. The war was a mistake. It'll go down in history right below Vietnam as one of America's worst military decisions. War, war, war that's all McCain knows. Well the rest of the world, Powell included, has decided to give love a try. Love for the brother man who will have a conversation with world leaders before dropping bombs. It was that dumb azz war that got us in the financial mess we're in today. So McCain can continue to press for a war that the majority of the country now opposes. He can continue to have his geriatric Barbie for a wife cry on tv about their son who is at war (probably the most protected soldier in Iraq). He can continue to let his lipstick pitbull make an azz out of herself. Also, he can continue to try his darnest to make Obama look "un-American". He can continue to boast the support of Sec. of States who haven't served in half the country's lifetime and he can find another "Joe" to add to the bunch. I want him to continue to do these things b/c the more he does this the more America sees that he has no platform to stand on. While he and his sidekick stand at the platform looking for another country to invade, this train's rolling to the White House.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking now gives Barack Obama an 11 percentage point lead over John McCain in the presidential vote preferences of all registered voters, 52% to 41%. Obama still leads, but by single digits, among “traditional” and “expanded” likely voters.

Comment: Musb, you parse my sentences. My intial point was in response to SS69054, who wrote: "Obama stated that he will have Powell as one of his top advisers." Maybe for your benefit I should have said "touting praise to the point of giving him a cabinet position." Is that better? Moving on, I don't know of an article off-hand, I just know that I heard that Obama was in the midst of very liberal Chicago politics in the Illinois State senate and there, like in most places, the war was unpopular. So in that circle, Obama (speaking at an anti-Iraq war rally it should be noted) was preaching to the choir in many ways. Still though, the speech was brilliant and he did make a caveat that he wasn't "against all wars just dumb wars" which helped him in the long run, so again, I applaud him for that. That sentiment, though, was not apparent in 2005 when he voted for war funding or when he chose Biden as his running mate. FYI, Hagel voted for the war. I'm not sure about Kaine's support but I'll take your word for it. I favored them over Biden though not because of the war (obviously) but other reasons, ala more charisma, more of a game-changer, bringing in more new people, but that's another topic for another day. But about your overarching premise, you were being facetious, but you were right about my opinion. I believe everyone who partook in that war should have lost their positions of power, I've stated that before. Given that that's not going to happen, there are some who are more beneficial going forward than others, but that entails other issues as previously stated. I hope that clears up where I was coming from.

Comment: CRENEEJ "now i know they work across the aisle and party lines, but to have someone who is so fundamentally different doesn't seem like a good idea at least to me right now." I totally disagree. First, I don't know or at this point care whether 'Rak asks Powell to be involved in his cabinet. It's counting eggs before they hatch, because he needs to first win the election. One thing, however, that the Bush administration did to their detriment was surrounding the President with synchopants, people who thought like and agreed with the Prez on most every issue. When you surround yourself with people who see the world the same way that you do and don't ask your "advisers" to challenge your positions and offer differing views you miss out on the diversity of American. Regardless of Powell's flaws on the Iraq war, he is one man that any president would and should be honored to have in his administration. Just don't put the shackles on him like Bush did.

Southernbelle, I may go to TGIF Nov. 4th...Re: Prayer,Bigchassie, I posted a 'No Weapon formed against Barack Obama shall prosper' prayer at my blog if you want to recite it daily at www.princene.blogspot.com scroll down.
Did anyone hear my shoutout at KJLH radio this morning on the Guy Black Show? All their shows are centered around registration for voting as this is the last day to register in California. You can fill out your registration there at Magic's Starbucks Centinela and La Cienega in Ladera. I got to do the famous roll call and shouted out my church/Pastor, who is former Motown Producer. You can hear some of his music/video at www.myspace/princene. I loved the fact that Colin Powell communicated in a language his Repubs understood (NO MCCAIN)and if he is truly sorry for the war in Iraq then I can forgive him, but then I did not lose my son who also joined after 9/11, so I'm sure it is a mixed bag of emotions out there for Colin Powell. I hope the King adult children get on the same page and vote for Barack Obama and really let God deal with their differences as it saddened me to see them in court behind their disagreements.

Comment: TG...lol..nah I just responded to what you wrote to Crenee when you said "Creenj, exactly. It's contradictory for BO to tout Powell's praises on one hand and lambast the war he helped start on the other." My confusion was you making Powell an unacceptable cabinet pick but wanting Hillary as the VP. IMO, that is contradictory. Re: Obama's opposition, Obama was in synch w/those against the war (Durbin, Clyburn, Kennedy, Conyers, Cummings, Fatah, Jackson-Lee, Waters etc.) Whether he deserves credit is up for debate. One thing not debateable is that his "speech" laid out a blueprint for what would happen post-invasion..much of which has happened. Crenee..I hear ya..it's just hard for me to separate a Senator who voted for the war from the person who made the case to the UN. Both are said to knowingly have had "faulty" intelligence and still went forward in supporting it. Also, Powell's foreign policy doctrine is similar to Obama's in that they both believe it {diplomacy} should be exhausted at all costs. They are in agreement on Education matters. They are in agreement w/where black people are/need to go. Yes they are different re: political affiliation but I don't see their differences as fundamental. Obama has fundamental differences w/Bush/Cheney and now McCain. Powell is a different breed and nebody..including Hillary would welcome his support. BTW, it would not surprise me if Condi voted for Obama.

I think most Blacks are morally guided and I think it would be hard for them to sell something that was a matter of life or death with good conscience, I really do. The fact that Powell did that--reluctantly or not, being an obedient soldier or not or whatever--says a lot imo. But again, I appreciate his endorsement of BO. (I have to keep saying that so it doesn't get lost in my criticism).

If BO doesn't take Georgia, it won't be because Blacks didn't show up, it will be because rednecks outnumbered them, lol. But for right now, BO still has a really good shot, imo. Don't count GA out just yet...

Comment: An account from early voting in NC yeaterday: "The campaign has given supporters lists with hours and locations of early voting sites, and collected the names, e-mail address and cell phone number of each attendee at the Fayetteville rally Sunday afternoon. (There were a few thousand who had to listen to his speech from the parking lot after the coliseum hit about 10,000 capacity.)....I headed over to the closest one and found a steady line of voters hoping to cast ballots early. Most seemed to be Obama supporters and several had come from the rally. Nearly all the voters were black. Also at the polling site was a group of loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. Nearly all were white....Most voters in line ignored the hecklers but a few heckled back. One black woman told me she was deeply saddened to see people protesting the most fundamental right of democracy...." Hopefully things won't get much uglier than this, particularly in the very rural areas of the South, where some white folk may be having a flashback to 60/70 years ago when they could put on some sheets and successfully intimidate Black people away from the polls. This is a new day though, and they may have to be reminded of that by whatever ways become necessary.

Comment: TGen I told the story earlier this year and because of your scathing Powell post I have to reiterate some of the remarks he made. Powell was the guest speaker at the University's 60th anniversary gala and he admitted he was wrong for first giving bushit his support for the war (which is more than what sillary was willing to do) he also distanced himself from the rethugs because of that same war and when he could get out he did. He doesn't speak too highly of his time believing bushit had reason but he is definitely regretful. I said all that to say at some point you have to let all that go and especially because he came down on the right side - I'm waiting for Condi to verbalize her choice and although I know it's for Obama - she is likely to keep it to herself to keep from burning bridges important to her regardless of whether or not she decides to continue in politricks.

This is the type of stuff I was hinting at. They come up with more and more ways to intimidate and disenfranchise voters every year. They do these outrageous things because the Dems will let them get away with it. I bet If a Dem ever think of doing something like that in a Repub district he would just get laughed at. Why can’t they pass laws to criminalize this. There is already a system to verify your eligibility, so how can this intimidation be permitted. Well, at least now we know how desperate they are.

Comment: Playing The Rev. Wright Card
McCain's campaign manager says he is reconsidering using Barack Obama's relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright as a campaign issue during the election's closing weeks.
In an appearance on conservative Hugh Hewitt's radio program, Davis said that circumstances had changed since John McCain initially and unilaterally took Obama's former pastor off the table. The Arizona Republican, Davis argued, had been jilted by the remarks of Rep. John Lewis, who compared recent GOP crowds to segregationist George Wallace's rallies. And, as such, the campaign was going to "rethink" what was in and out of political bounds.
