Free at last. I never thought that I -- a black girl who came of age in the utterly anticlimactic aftermath of the civil rights movement -- would say the phrase with any real sincerity in my lifetime. But ever since Nov. 4, I've been shouting it from every rooftop. I'm not excited for the most obvious reason. Yes, Obama's win was an extraordinary breakthrough and a huge relief, but I don't subscribe to the notion that his capturing the White House represents the end of American racial history. Far from it. There is a certain freedom in the moment -- as in, we are all now free from wondering when or if we'll ever get a black president. Congratulations to all of us for being around to settle the question.
But what really thrills me, what really feels liberating in a very personal way, is the official new prominence of Michelle Obama. Barack's better half not only has stature but is statuesque. She has coruscating intelligence, beauty, style and -- drumroll, please -- a butt. (Yes, you read that right: I'm going to talk about the first lady's butt.)

Many, Many people have said that the Levee was delibrately blown to flood out the low income/black areas to more or less 'clean' it out, instead of the offical report that the Levee simply broke---as an act of nature. HOWEVER, if you would like to read the official report on what caused the collapse...please read http://wtc.nist.gov/media/NIST_NCSTAR_1A_for_public_co mment.pdf. Pay special attention to section 4.3.4 (page 49) which talks about the collapse and that there was no evidence of a hypothetical blast scenario. They concluded that in order for the blast of the WTC's critical columns, the sound from the blast itself would have been comparable to a gunshot blast, standing next to a jet plane engine and more than 10x's louder than being front of speakers at a rock concert. There was no recorded sound of such from official videos.

Comment: I've seen American Gangster and I certainly have the sense to know that it is your choice to take drugs, but the type of drugs, the highly addictive drugs--I will still question why are neighborhoods were targeted, the same reason I question why it is rare to find the highly potent cheap wines in the liquor stores in white neighborhoods but are very prevelant in the black neighborhoods, why it is easy to buy a 40 in the black neighborhoods but not in the white neighborhoods, why the higher alcohol content beer is in the black neighborhoods. I am not blaming the man, but the man sure does give us the ability to make poorer choices.
