Comment: Can't wait to add these items to my Obamabelia collection.
Wish the Newsweek cover was in color. Love the fact that this is a dark skinned Black woman - finally! an extremely positive role model that my daughter can relate to cause she looks just like her and does her daughter's hair in cornrows and twists.
It's difficult to look at the "Black" women in the media and convince her that she is them when so many don't look anything like her by the time they get finished with the weaves, blonde extensions, green eyes or biracial heritage - i.e Mary J., Rihanna, Tyra, Halle, Alicia, Mariah, et al, all of whom we love to death. It's just nice to see a natural looking dark skinned sister getting love.
Of course I point out and we go to see other Black women from history or contemporary media but the above mentioned are the stars and make the most impact in her pre-teen mind. Now I can point to the ultimate media star who's covering ALL the magazines, TV, etc. And she's smart too!
And it's good for the rest of the world to recognize the worth of the the darker hued sisters in the world. I work with folks from India, Northern Africa and Asia and they've all acknowledged that in their cultures to be dark skinned is considered to be less attractive, less valued and less desired. Hopefully seeing Michele Obama will upset that mindset. And it goes without saying that the same holds true in the US.
One of the greatest things that this presidency will accomplish for our kids is make being smart cool.
