Comment: We're now at the point where rather than research and use logic we make it up as we go along because that justifies celebrating a holiday that brings the hypocrites out and in full color. I have never gotten into the gift giving, the tree or the waste of electricity but somehow or other every time I say 'I don't celebrate xmas' I end up with stuff I didn't ask for and really can't use. Dust catching nicknacks in ugly shapes and colors, gift certificates to stores I don't shop at, restaurants that I don't eat at and I'm still trying to find all the Christ in that. Crime rises this time of year and with the influx of immigrants the crimes have become more horrific. What about Peace on Earth Goodwill toward men (and women)? That's a simple concept but maybe that's the problem - its too simple. The best I can do is wish you all a happy holiday season and pray for better times and for 2009 to be the start for all good things in the black community. Past that I'd end up buying a gift and I just can't see wasting my hard earned dollars on something I'd rather keep for myself!

Comment: Insightful piece Darryl. McNasty, cosign. When you get down to it, the so-called sacred text that we know as the Bible was an amalgamation of scriputures from various authors and was put together as a uniform document through quite a bit of politics, debate and compromise. For anyone to suggest that the Bible is or is the only expression of God (a higher being) writing through people is seriously in the dark about how the Christian faith came to being. I say this as someone of faith (Christian if you will). But let it not be said that I'm deluded into believing that the expression of the Bible is the be-all and end-all of what a higher being has been saying to human kind over the years. Your piece on Christmas hightlights the very real issues that we have in these so-called sacred holidays and holy scriptures.

Comment: Hi Darryl, I am throwing my two cents in today about the celebration of christmas. I haven't celebrated christmas for over 15 years for those very reasons(after learnign about mithraism). When I tell people I don't celebrate I get stares and glares, believe it or not some people love living in the dark.
In saying that, this is still my favorite time of the year, because of the creativity. Even though I don't participate in xmas parties or gift exchanges, I love seeing the decorations and lights.
It is difficult for my son because he often participates in grab bag. As he gets older he will show more restraint. I am not completely without fault, my heart tends to reach out to disadvantage kids that ask for clothes or other things and I tend to donate anonymously.

Comment: Sexee its one of my favorite times too! Even though some of the camarderie is fake - I still like it that some will make the effort at being cordial. For me its a time to get together with people I don't see regularly and get some serious house cleaning done. Other than that I can honestly say at this point I am just too tired of all the ads, commercials and deals and fake santa's ringing a bell trying to part me with my hard earned dollars. I don't just donate this time of year - I do it every change of the season so all I have left at this time of year - is me! The only ones that benefit are merchants and undeserving kids.

Comment: Co-sign with McNasty, Exmun, Sexee and Darryl! DJ, you're better than me on this one because most people out here are followers and when it comes to following and believing in those things that this society has elevated to the highest level(s), the orgins of which unbeknownst(sp) to most, it's almost nothing you can say or do to make them see the delusion in their thinking...even if you show them proof, especially proof coming from their own "one and only" book of Right, they will always give you bunches of ifs-ands-n-buts that basically amount to excuses as to why they're fearful of thinking for themselves-- "I mean, what will my friends and family think of me if I don't celebrate with them...oh my". This holiday is about MONEY, ok, plain and simple...injecting money into the economy to strengthen whatever it is that this country uses as its economic indicators now. It was a period when these holidays (TG &X) was used to strengthen GDP; but now, being that a small % of the products consumed are produced in this country, I'm not sure how GDP factors in. I wonder do people know that there was a time, when everything was going swell, that from the day after thanksgiving to new years day more than 75% of the money made by the US all year was made then. It's probably much higher now even though people with little-to very very little money are still scrambling to do what they've been told they should do and what everybody else doing. Umh umh umh...keep skribblin' man.

Comment: Paper money has no just weight or measure. Once upon a time you were able to exchange paper money for gold or silver. Now money is backed by credit. THat is the very reason our country and the world is in the state it is in today. USA GDP is service as oppose to actual products and the majority of the manufacturing jobs are outsourced. The manufacutring jobs we have internally lacks quality compared to imported products. We are a nation of consumers, but if we don't have any jobs how can we consume? Our pseudo-corporate leaders forecasting only were observed on a month to month basis. They didn't stop to think on how this would effect our future generations.

Comment: Uhm---I like Christmas, I like gifts (even the real funky ones, it's challenge to me to see how I can use it,) I like giving Gifts (don't go overboard give what I can afford to for that year,) I love the whole season, no problem with those who don't it should truly be a personal choice without being labeled a Heathen or worse. With that said I truly appreciate the history lesson, too many people follow blindly without knowing the reasons---Now you have me afraid of Mistletoe LOL! Anyone looking forward to the next installment, passing this article along---hope I don't get labeled a Heathen or worse LOL!!!!

Comment: When it comes to 'rules' to follow we have the 10 commandments but I don't see a whole lot of folks breaking their necks to follow them and out of all the directions, instructions and birthdays in the bible the one that is not there is that of Jesus Christ. Even He didn't say anything about celebrating his birth - just reiteriting what God said about following His word.

Comment: Very good article Darryl, Sexee I so agree with you. I stopped celebrating this pagan holiday about ten years ago. And like you I get strange looks when I boldly say I don't celebrate Christmas. I started thinking outside the box, and really observe this time of year and see it for what it really is, this time of year people who are normally snobs the phoniness comes out of them, the crowded stores, the heavy spending and parents are forced to lie to their children (lol) and I realize this cant be about Jesus, all of the sudden I was on the outside looking in. We are taught and condition to believe that this is the time of year to celebrate the birth of Christ and to give give and give . The bible makes no reference about Christmas so how religious leaders base their Christmas day sermons on a holiday that is not supported by the higher being is beyond me!

Comment: an unbiased study of the history of Christianity will bear mental feast for thought on the DJ's points and much more . . . . my favorite family and friends gathering holiday is Thanks Giving . . . . . in these times, every year sees earlier and earlier prompting to spend money for Christmas . . . . the reason for the season is Jesus and He never called Himself a Christian . . . . if He truly does return to earth, how will we discern His spiritual purity from the pollution?

Comment: thank u brother james 4 addressing this issue. something i've been preaching about 4 umteen years. christmas and easter, both pagan helladays in which black people spend money we don't have and indulge all manner of behaviors which have no spiritual basis 2 them at all. i have no beef w/ people celebrating whatever they desire, my beef is with the ignorance surrounding it. ye worship and ye know not what. great peice...keep 'em comin

Comment: GWINE, Brotha Darryl, wit yo' bad self! Sadly, we are steeped in tradition: the way it's done versus getting the facts. As a people, its been our faith that's brought us thus far, and 'now' that's been sold at below market value. Furthermore, if more of us would 'get into' the facts of how Constantine deluded the people towards what is now perceived as 'christianity,' the 'wall would come tumblin down!
