Comment: this eur story has been regurgitated three or four times now. we know she aint coming to the party..so what!! she didnt back obama to begin with, so its no surprise. she woulda looked outta pocket up there anyway knowing she was a clitonite.
lastly, most folks wit good got dayum sense no dayum well its gonna be nightmare out there.
case and point, in philly, when the the phillies won the world series and we had the parade down broad street a few months ago, it practically brought mass transit to its knees. folks were stuck in the city all day trying to get home on the trains and taxi cabs. forget about the taxi cabs back to your hotels in d.c., taint gonna happen for ya. there were about a bit over a million people at the phillies parade lined up on broad street north to south. philly is helluva alot bigger than the mall area and surrounding areas down there in d.c. where they trying to have, a predicted somewhere between 2 and 4 million folks. good luck, huey not discouraging folks from going, but u dayum well better bring a case and a half of mothereffn patients. i will be on my couch, snuggled up with the little sweety cakes, sipping on brown juice and crying like a little beeyitch. over

Comment: during Friday evening "rush hour", DC's Metro had a cracked rail on the Red Line resulting in what they call "single tracking": I thought it was interesting that numerous trains were going in the direction of predominantly white neighborhoods [seriously, more than five trains on that side to one train on the "diverse" neighborhoods side, I was counting] . . . . . there was another mess during Monday evening's "rush hour" on the Red Line, with the major backup in the direction of "diverse" neighborhoods, so I am not persuaded that the DC subway system is ready for January 20 . . . . . bridges will be closed and bus routes are changed . . . . . I am going to the mall and will get there somehow, some way, but it ain't gone be easy

Comment: Very gracious of Dr. Angelou, wishing the other poet well like that. Re the DC "nightmare," personally I tire of hearing about how horrible it will be. It's a historic event and no doubt the logistics will be difficult, but it's history in the making, so I'm willing to grin and bear it. So what if I'm uncomfortable while there? I will NEVER get this chance again. This is the FIRST [half] Black president in this country's history! That's just too huge to miss, at least that's how I'm trying to prep myself, lol. I can sleep when I'm dead. Right now, I just don't want to miss the moment. But that's just me...

Comment: TGEN...NY papers are reporting today that Mayor Fenty and Security said those watching the noontime oath taking from the National Mall will be BARRED from walking north to Pennsylvania Ave for the 2:30 parade. Soundslike folks will have to pick one. FYI but I am sure you already know this, since you are going!

Comment: The park service in 2009 is still saying there weren't 2 mil here for the million man march so there is no way they are able to predict the crowds on the 20th. I too was gonna make my way over to the mall but the temperature and the promise of a 6 hour wait to get outta the crowd caused me to pull together an Obama's Oath gathering at my local watering hole. Time to look at something more than cnn and sports on that big screen tv!

Comment: TGEN..that's what I'm saying..either come or stay at home or complain. DC is accustomed to traffic nightmares. The problem won't be DC really but the people coming unfamiliar w/DC (no knock against visitors). I have no doubt that DC folk will know how to get where we need to be. Teigh...it's always been virtually impossible to see both the inauguration and the parade. They are blocking off blocks around the capitol and the parade route. I have a friend who firm has already made arrangement for some of the attorneys to stay overnight in the office. Secret service is locking buildings around the site down. U won't be able to get in or out. That's normal stuff. BTW, yeah Maya stay yo azz at home.

Comment: TGen --as i stated, it will be an historical occassion an a great oppourtunity, but be advised, this is NOT a typical day in the life of dc traffic. dont let anyone fool u into believing that. this event is like none other ever witnessed before and for one to go into this thinking that the authorities have this thing all mapped out are totally off base. this will not be a cake walk, even for those that live in the metro dc/md/va area. i lived in gaithersburg md and i know the lay of the land in that little town of d.c. i use to get my hair put into tolerance and get my jerk chicken and curry goat on georgia avenue by howard u. keep in mind what im saying to u. i have seen it from both sides of the tracks philly/dc and this has the makings of a complete nightmare. it just depends on the numbers of people and the coordinations efforts, but mostly the numbers of people. be prepared is all i can tell ya, because everyone wants to be there, just like u. good luck either way, it will be a great event to be at im sure.

Comment: Even if Maya had went, she wouldn't be with the population of folks who are coming. I'm sure Oprah or whomever big she knows would have looked out for her. She's was sick recently and getting up in age and may not be able to be in mood but she is doing good by staying at home.

Comment: Huey - When I lived in DC back in the '90s, I remember some fool threatening to jump off the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The police shut down access to the bridge and the whole city was shut down by the traffic. I agree. I think it's going to be a nightmare, so I've decided to watch the inauguration from the comfort of my own living room. I wish everyone going good luck and hope you are able to watch this historic event, but I think you better set your TIVO just in case. I have a feeling a bunch of folks will miss the inauguration altogether just trying to get to it or be stuck in front of a big screen on the mall anyway--i figured if I'm going to watch it on a big screen, it might as well be in a warm house with plenty of toilets. LOL

I think what it is is "It's Been A Long Road" (and I know a change gonna come) may be part of the thinking for some of the elders. It may also be a little "Of course we are happy and elated for the brotha but it's so dayum overdue, hayell, this shoulda happened years ago, we done marched our march and fought our fights for freedom justice and equality, ya'll young people....yall got it from here! Comment: Next Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President. On this historic occasion, PARADE asked the President-elect, who is also a devoted family man, to get personal and tell us what he wants for his children. Here, he shares his letter to them.
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.
I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential—schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even if their parents aren't rich. And I want th em to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.

Comment: Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country—but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free—that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.
Sasha (l) and Malia Obama at play in New Hampshire in 2007.
Bumper cars at the Iowa State Fair20in August 2007.
That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better—and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.
I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much—although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.
These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure .
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House
