Comment: This is a story worth being told and I for one am glad its being brought to the big screen. Maybe if JCP sees it or even bothers to read the story he'll get a clue and quit saying racism isn't as bad as we are making out or that if we ignore it it will go away. He is truly one misguided ill informed kneegrow!
As for her moving from Podunk to Houston - she'll like Houston better - I know I fell in love with the city last year when I spent some time there.

Comment: Good Morning Boot! Don't feel like the lone ranger - in fact I believe you have a lot of company on that line. Since before Obama's campaign I've been teetering my damn self. Southern crackers need to be sent a strong message that this kinda shat won't be tolerated but will be prosecuted to the fullest extent and black folk on the receiving end need not be afraid to stand up for what is right.

Comment: Morning. I hadn't heard about this case until today. I went to Regina's website and read up on it. The one question I kept asking over and over (before I found the answer) was - what was the benefit to the drug task force to arrest these people? Increased federal funding for good arrest numbers. DAMN!!! I knew money was at the root.

Comment: Houston was cool, but something kept me short of wanting to move there. I have family there that love it, and will never come back to DC, but something bout the Texas law, and the large distance to drive everywhere that got me. Plus their homes don't have basements (extra Man space I love and need). LOL

Highlife that's a good reason to create a man sized dog house/boomboom room in the back yard. As for all the distance driving - didn't bother me too much cause traffic isn't as bad there as it is here in the metro DC area so I can't take issue with that either. The only negative about Houston is the extreme heat and humidity but after a few days even that wasn't reason enough not to go back or not consider moving there myself.
ArkansasGirl I'm looking forward to going back to visit my new friends at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe where my husband and I spent time. We met some of the local jazz artists and were given their cds and we discovered a throw down soul food joint called 'This is It' and damned if it wasn't!LOL

Comment: I hadn't heard of this story until today. Gotta read up, especially since this sista lives right here in H-Town now! McNasty, you are right, This is It IS the place to be, it was the resturant the chicks worked at in the movie Jason's Lyric (and the radio DJ in the movie, Madd Hatta is still on today, he has a morning show on 97.9!) And you're right about the basements Jazzy, unless folks want an indoor swimming pool! We're too close to the water for underground shelters...ie, Hurricaine IKE!

Comment: in other news: federal appeals court in Atlanta on Thursday rejected death-row inmate Troy Anthony Davis’ bid for a new trial on claims he did not kill a Savannah police officer in 1989.
In a 2-1 opinion, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Davis could not establish by clear and convincing evidence a jury would not have found him guilty.
In October, the 11th Circuit granted Davis a stay three days before he was to be put to death by lethal injection. It marked the third time Davis’ life was spared before his scheduled execution.
On Thursday, the two-judge majority noted that state courts and the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles had exhaustively reviewed Davis’ claims and rejected them.
Judges Joel Dubina and Stanley Marcus said they agreed with those conclusions. “Davis has not presented us with a showing of innocence so compelling that we would be obligated to act today,” they wrote.
The judges said they view the recantations with skepticism and, after reviewing Davis’ claims, “remain unpersuaded.”
Judge Rosemary Barkett dissented. “To execute Davis, in the face of a significant amount of proferred evidence that may establish his actual innocence, is unconscionable and unconstitutional,” she wrote.
The 11th Circuit kept in place its stay of execution for another 30 days so Davis can pursue his final appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court. The high court in October declined to consider a previous appeal.
Davis, 40, stands convicted of killing off-duty Savannah Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail. The 27-year-old former Army Ranger was shot three times before he could draw his weapon.
Russ Willard, spokesman for state Attorney General Thurbert Baker, said the 11th Circuit made the “correct decision.”
Tom Dunn, one of Davis’ lawyers, said he was disappointed, but would fight on. “Troy is innocent and this struggle is far from over.”

Comment: Lovebites whites don't fear us - they have the power and authority and they don't want to share any of it. We are making strides - more blacks in high places, more blacks in places usually coveted by whites - what scares them is for us to in their faces appear equal to them.

Comment: McNasty, I'm from Arkansas so the heat and humidity I'm use too. lol Houston is the 4th largest city so driving a distance is a given. The last time I visited my friend and I just rode around. As long as we knew which highway to get back on to get back to his cousin's house, we were good. Houston is where I fell in love with Pappadeaux Restaurant.

Comment: Jazz> I think the numbers will not be great, considering I haven't seen one commercial regarding this movie. This is the first piece of information that I have seen that said it will be in theaters this weekend. Have you seen commercials? If not, I would say it's safe to say that this won't be in Top 10. I haven't seen one stitch of adverstisement in the Seattle area.

I hadn't heard about this sista's story prior to seeing the trailer and didn't know any docs had been done, which I'll check out as well. I've never been Texas, but the way some of you have described Houston make it sound like the place to be. ;-)

Comment: >RegalOne- I stopped reading the posts after I read yours. You took the letters right off of my keyboard! In this country, the bottom line is money. The color the matters the most is GREEN. And if some crakkkas have to step on some black/brown/yellow folks that "get in the way", then hey, that's just gravy!!! I'm very proud of this young sista for standing up for herself and I wish her and her family well in the future. I'm so glad her story is being told and I will support this movie in the theatre. We need to keep telling these types of stories. There is nothing post-racial about Amerikkka. The Repbulicans are chomping at the bit because Obama shook Chavez's hand. The sight of a black man and a brown man, who are world leaders, showing RESPECT to EACH OTHER has sent them into a tizzy. Newt 'nem really, REALLY need to get a life. How in the heyell is Obama shaking hands with Chavez sending a "wrong message" and "threatening US security"? I mean, REALLY? You can still respect your adversary even if you don't like or trust him. All Obama is "guilty" of is stepping to another MAN like a MAN. If that's wrong, then I'm like Gladys and don't wanna be right. *Stepping off soapbbox.* Sorry about going off topic, but that's been bothering me and I had to get it off my chest.

Comment: I check this movie out the other day. It is a good film. I sat frustrated throughout the movie, almost yelling at the screen wondering why these people weren't speaking up for themselves! Why these people didn't know their rights! They don't know cuz they aren't exposed to better, to empowerment. Whew makes me wanna holla!
