Comment: I'm not hating on Mariah, but I do believe that she should have worn something more appropriate for this service. One does not always need to show everything all the time. I think it would have done so much to enhance her in the particular moment had she worn something a little more appropriate for what was basically a funeral. A ball gown was not appropriate IMO.

Comment: I told my mama that woman was blackinese. What a wonderful singer and I'm sure her phone is blowing up. Some good always comes from a bad situation. I can understand Mariah being hurt but that is no excuse. She lost her voice long time ago when she started that whisper singing like Britney Spears. Whitney Houston almost sounds better than she does. If anybody should have been having an emotional time it was Jennifer Hudson. Use it or lose it.

Comment: It is understandable how, in spite of her years of expereince, she could lose it..when I sing (in the confines of my home), there are certain songs I am overcome with emotion that I am unable to not lose it e.g. What's Goin' On?...so I can understand how she might have lostt it seeing his casket and reality set in at that moment

Comment: I agree with most of your post Boot except the part about Bey. I've heard her sing through her nose. However Patti, Gladys or Dionne would have definately brought it! Whitney Houston has always sounded better than Mariah. I like Mariah's voice but laterly it sounds like she sings in this whispery tone. I didn't like her renedition of this song.

Comment: Give me a break SOILL, Whitney Houston on her worst day will always be better than Mariah Carey. No comparison. Mariah Carey has been sounding bad for years but she not like Whitney uses backing tapes most of time she performs. At MJ Memorial she didnt have the luxury of a backing tape so your hear the Real Mariah Carey voice and the chick hasnt been singing good for years now.

Comment: Katso - interesting. I didn't know about the backing tapes. However my former voice teacher introduced me to one of Mariah's back-up singers. She was performing in New York. My voice teacher said "I want you to hear this woman sing. Mariah is easily stealing from this woman." I was shocked to hear the similarities between this woman and Mariah's "high pitched whistles" heard on her album.

But, like I said yesterday, her plunging neckline was tasteless and she should have shown some discretion since she was at a MEMORIAL. Banned> Gladys was there but she obviously she chose not to sing. I saw her brief interview on Entertainment tonight. Debbie Allen was there as well.

Comment: Don't know if I quite buy that explanation. Mariah often seems to struggle to find/hit notes when performing live. Although I must say I watched her in a very nice live (televised) performance a couple of weeks ago where her voice was in great shape, i.e., she was hitting all her legendary Minnie Ripperton-type high notes. Speaking of singing, I saw this incredible group at the Essence Music Festival called Zap Mama. The lead woman had a phenomenal voice, as did her background singers. The musicians in the group were outstanding as well.

Comment: It didn't matter to me how anyone sounded that day. I know there was a lot of emotion and people handle their emotions differently. Who knows if Beyonce, Aretha, Chris Brown, Chaka or anyone else would have suddenly became emotional at the sight of that casket. With that being said, i'm gonna take one last jab at BET. I know Debra Lee has got to be kicking herself (and rightfully so). This is how you do a tribute, I don't wanna hear the LAME EXCUSE about last minuite changes. AEG didn't have a lot of time to either and look how great that was. I know AEG is a huge corporation, but you don't have to have deep pockets to show class. Got Steve McNair's memorial service to watch on local tv tonight (I'm sure it will be available online).

Comment: I can give Mariah a pass for this performance given the emotion, though when I was watching it my impression was that her voice sounded tired. As I said yesterday, Usher was the only one who sang well at the memorial. Everyone else had singing issues, including Stevie--though he's a living legend and one of my favs. Lionel sounded like he needed some water. Even Jennifer Hudson sounded like she was having a hard time blowing because the baby was pushing back too hard on her diaphragm. J-Hud's vocals lacked air support. The white kid that everyone was gaga over had his share of pitch issues with a song in a key that was perhaps a step or half step too high. Like I said, Ursh was the only one who sounded like you could make a record from his performance. Erry body else needed a resing or some autotune.

Comment: Honestly, none of the singing performances did anything for me with the exception of the gospel choir. But, it wasn't about that for me. It was about the outpouring of love folks had for Michael. So I can do with the less than stellar performances. I broke down when they wheeled his casket in -- it brought it all home for me that he really is dead. Loved Rev'end Al and the last part of his speech for MJJ's children.

Comment: I went back and watched M.J.'s "30th Anniversary Celebration" special that broadcast on CBS awhile ago. The show where Whitney was beyond skinny and had people wondering what drug was she on. A lot of big names were there to support M.J. and didn't care about the false allegations. Like Destiny's Child, Usher and others. M.J. was also in rare form when he performed "The Way You Make Me Feel".

Comment: I hate to be mean, I truly applaud MCarey for having the courage to go up there (esp since she rarely gives good live performances) but she gets no pazz, the emotion was not what made her fail, she's just lost "it," something that's been apparent for years despite her radio hits. Boot, you are SO right about Gladys and the old school. I had the GREAT pleasure of seeing Gladys AND Smokey in concert last night at Chastain (park in Atl). They BOTH brought it. AWESOME live performers. And you recall that Smokey was just at the MJ tribute a day before. He was still able to pull himself together and give the crowd what they paid for. Same for Gladys. I wish there were more new-school who took lessons from the old-school. There are some who bring it live (Anthony Hamilton, Maxwell, Chrisette Michelle, yes even Beyonce), but not enough. Back to the topic: Mariah, you used to be one of my favorite singers, used to love ALL your music (in your pre-slut days, lol), and I would not pay to see you perform...and that says a lot. Again, sorry to be mean. *shrug*

Comment: Many singers have off moments, unfortunately or fortunately they have not been records for posterity to dissect and criticize. Mariah had a off time, heck maybe an off few performances oh well, hopefully she'll get better and she'll still have her fans---BTW Chaka had a whole off decade performancewise in the mid 80s it was real hit or miss depending on her 'head' (if you know what I mean) at the time and people still love her. I think it depends on how much love you had from people to begin with, although many admired Mariah's voice, many don't like Mariah's perceived personality so her flaws are more glaring to a lot of people.

Comment: Mariah's voice is not the same, nor will it ever be. Her better days are behind her. BoreYawnSay would not have put any emotion, passion, life into her singing. She never does, she brings the wind machine and fake tears for effect. I don't know what people hear when she howls, but that voice is annoying and lacks versatility. It is not pleasant to hear. If she was invited which she wasn't because she was talking sh&&&t about the Jacksons, she would have found a way to make it about her. She is truly overrated. Mariah should not have explained anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She did what she was expected to sing!
