Angela Carr Patterson      Teaching our children the value of writing thank you notes is an important lesson.  It teaches them how to express their gratitude and appreciation for someone else’s good deed toward them.  Thank you notes should be sent soon after the deed is done, preferably within a week.  Thank you notes should be sent on these occasions:

        * When you receive a gift from someone.
        * When you have stayed in someone’s home overnight.
        * When you have received a special kindness or favor from someone.

Thank you notes have three parts:

        1. Thank the giver and name the give.
        2. Say something nice about the gift.
        3. Use a pleasant closing and sign your name.

Anyone is capable of sending an electronic thank you note.  But thank you notes are meant to reflect the sender’s personality, not only in the words selected but in the stationary and handwriting.  Most people save thank you notes to remember your message or to re-read.  This cannot happen to an e-mail thank you message.  I realize that people are eager to embrace new technology.  But please remind your child that a personal thank you note should not be electronic because it deserves a personal touch. Remember, people are like diamonds, they sparkle once they are polished.
