My feelings were and are still the same, irrespective of one’s star status. We should not applaud the use of drugs, their enablers or express “shock” at the prospect of a celebrity suffering from a drug problem later down the road.
The reasons are simple, as the signs of addiction are usually evident for quite some time. In the Whitney Houston example, I pointed to her ABC interview with Diane Sawyer…the handwriting was on the wall then.

Let’s cut to the chase and get some simple assumptions out of the way.
If you use cocaine, we can assume you are a drug addict…no ifs, ands, or buts. I’ve yet to meet any ‘casual’ user of cocaine who was not already addicted or on the short track to addiction. Using cocaine has only one inevitable destination and it’s never far away. It’s like the man who jumps off the building with no parachute…it may be “all good” as he passes floors 110 – 23; but guaranteed, the asphalt is approaching.
If you can’t do without cocaine during air travel you’re surely an addict…and surely an idiot too. In this post 9/11 world, if you try to transport anything beyond your tighty-whities and Old Spice aftershave…you deserve to go to jail, regardless of your country of origin.

This is not a point that needs to be belabored. The pardon of Dallas Cokehead is disheartening on a number of levels. It sends the message that once again, ‘celebrity’ trumps criminality and common sense. It says that although this cokehead is a user presently and has used cocaine for quite some time…his habit will continue unchecked, untreated and unpunished.
What SHOULD be belabored and underscored is that the behavior is criminal. And we shouldn’t search for any other euphemism in which to describe it. Also, if there aren’t any repercussions for the criminal behavior, then surely there is no motivation for anyone to address the addiction, one could argue. It’s pretty hard to conduct an intervention or rationalize with a cokehead that help is needed as long as the behavior is continuously enabled.
