*It amazes me how much time we spend in front of the television. In most homes the only communication we hear is that which is coming from the television. There are times when watching TV is fun and exciting. While there are many programs that only offer violence, sex and other destructive behaviors to our minds, there are also some very entertaining and wholesome programs for the entire family.

However, often times we use television to take the place of personal contact and communication with our family and friends.  I have even visited folks' home while they were watching television and they never once turn the program off to entertain me, their guest.

Guests should not have to compete with the TV for your attention.  Even if you are not watching the program, the background noise of television can be distracting. If yours is a home where the television is on most of the time, be aware that many other people prefer a quiet background, especially during a meal.

When a visitor comes unannounced during your favorite program, you don't necessarily need to turn off the show. Ask your visitor to join you for the remainder of the program, or you might take a minute to put the tape in so that you can record the show to watch after the visitor leaves.

Some occasions are planned around a television program---the Super Bowl, a favorite movie, or the Olympics, for example.  When this is the case, everyone in the room should focus on the program.  Remember to give the guest the best seats and make sure all the guests are comfortable.

Television is a fun and valuable tool to have around the home. However, let us not spend more time with the television than we do interacting and sharing with our families and friends. Remember, "People are like diamonds, they sparkle once they are polished."
