*“TV One on One” host Cathy Hughes features musical legend Patti LaBelle in an episode to air Sunday, Nov. 19 from 8 to 9 p.m. ET on TV One.
The interview is part of a special evening and week highlighting appearances by the Grammy Award-winning musical legend in advance of the world television premiere of the 2006 musical/comedy/drama “Preaching to the Choir,” in which LaBelle makes an appearance.
The film airs at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23, Saturday, Nov. 25 and Sunday, Nov. 26 (all times ET)
During the “TV One on One” interview, LaBelle says her legendary group, Labelle -- featuring herself, Nona Hendryx and Sara Dash, got together to record part of the soundtrack for the film, “Preaching to the Choir,” for which Hendryx was the music director. “And you know we’re recording this year, and we’re gonna go on the road next year,” LaBelle says.
The Philly-born singer also tells Hughes about how Patricia Louise Holt – her real name – became Patti LaBelle. It happened at her first recording audition, when the studio manager, who doubled as a car dealer, told her she was “too ugly” to be a recording star.
“Well, I opened my mouth and did an a cappella version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ . . .I said, ‘You want to put a bag over my head now?’ He was so blown away with this, he said, ‘I think I have to call you ‘LaBelle.’”
LaBelle tells Hughes that her first gospel album, “The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle,” which is scheduled to be released on Nov. 21 is a testimony to the power of prayer and the effect that God has had on her life. Some of the artists featured on the CD include Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Soul Seekers, J Moss, Tye Tribett and Wynonna Judd.
In a surprise visit that has become a regular feature on “TV One on One,” LaBelle is joined by composer/friend Denise Rich who has written such songs for her as “I’m in Love,” “Addicted to You,” “Love is Just a Whisper Away,” “Voice Inside My Heart” and “Where Love Begins,” written especially for LaBelle’s gospel CD.
The Patti LaBelle interview will repeat on Wednesday 11/22 at 10 a.m., Thursday 11/23 at 10 p.m. and Sunday 12/2 at 2 p.m.. (All times ET.)
