*Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles are on the radar of human rights groups after both reportedly agreed to wear a bunch of bling at last week's Golden Globes Awards to promote the diamond industry.
According to Contact Music, the actress/singers were recruited by the Raise Your Right Hand campaign to showcase their ice in the face of negative publicity sparked by the recent film “Blood Diamond,” which highlights Sierra Leone’s diamond-fueled civil war during the 1990s.
According to reports, J.Lo and Beyonce agreed to wear diamonds to the Globes in exchange for a $10,000 check to be donated from the Raise Your Right Hand campaign to the African charities of their choice.
This arrangement did not sit well with such groups as Global Witness, whose Combating Conflict Diamond Campaign calls on Hollywood to stop promoting the precious jewels because of the way African rebels amputated civilians in the search for conflict diamonds.
Global Witness campaigner Alex Yearsley says of Raise Your Right Hand’s actions: "It's rather disgusting if you think about Sierra Leone and the hands that got hacked off there. It's an attempt to hit back at the film. You can imagine the PR campaign that came up with it. But the industry didn't do much for the Sierra Leonean women with no right hand when all this was going on."
Meanwhile, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) continues to hound Jennifer Lopez for wearing real animal fur.
J.Lo was not present during auditions Friday for her new "Glow After Dark" reality show at Macy's in Downey, California. But two PETA members showed up disguised as hopefuls auditioning for the program. Once on stage, both launched into a verbal missive denouncing the entertainer.
Before one protester was shoved off stage by event handlers, she told the crowd: "I think the most important thing about being a diva...is not only being sexy and being stylish, but is not wearing real f***ing fur!” The PETA woman also tried encouraging the audience to repeat: "J.Lo, fur ho!"
TMZ.com has video of the confrontation here.
