Since the war in Iraq began four years ago, Soldiers have had all sorts of entertainment from the home front as a show of support-including receiving sexy Maxim Magazine free of charge. The scantily clad images in Maxim, described as "soft porn" don't appeal to some soldiers. As an alternative to the "lad mag" they have asked to receive Christian magazines.
Lifeway Christian Resources, the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, is working with Baptist associations and churches to create "Lifeboxes," which will provide, in addition to gum, notes of encouragement and stationary supplies, magazines like Christian Singles.
Lifeway, based in Nashville launched the effort when soldiers from Fort Campbell in Tennessee said they could live without the suggestive poses found in men's magazines like Maxim, Stuff and FHM, which are titillating, but don't show complete nudity like Playboy for example.
"They said, 'Frankly, when we're away from our families, we don't need to be seeing soft-core pornography,'" according to Rhonda Buescher, Lifeway's Director of advertising and circulation.
Says AP: nearly 3,500 churches nationwide have banned together to drop between 35,000 and 50,000 boxes to troops by March 23, targeting an Easter (April 8) arrival.
"Soldiers have said that mail and magazines are greatly appreciated, and now we have an opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives," Buescher explained.
Maxim spokesman Sean Evans said the magazine is not pornography and that Soldiers have requested it since the beginning of the war in Iraq.
