*Don’t cha wish you could be hot like the Pussycat Dolls? Don’t cha? Well the hot pop group is offering that chance to thousands of women in “The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll.”
The show, which premiered last night (with an encore presentation tonight) on the CW Network, brings a new flare to the “realitition” (reality competition) genre, pitting Pussycat wannabes with hopes of heading out on tour with the top-selling singing group.
The new music/reality series is a behind-the-scenes look at the process of selecting a member of the group out of thousands of hopefuls who audition. Nine finalists will compete on the show and in addition to these beautiful and talented young women, the show will include three judges: PCD creator and choreographer Robin Antin, Chairman of Geffen Records Chairman Ron Fair, and rapper Lil’ Kim.
The show is the next step in the Pussycat Dolls franchise, which has been in existence for more than 12 years. See, while the Pussycat Dolls the platinum-selling singing group may be considered new on the scene, the Pussycat Dolls the group was created 12½ years ago by Antin and her good friend Christina Applegate who had a dance studio in her garage.
“It started there and then grew into this kind of underground really cool thing we did at the Viper Room in Hollywood,” Antin explained, “and then these guest celebrities started coming in and wanted to be a part of it. They’d get dressed up, like a doll and that’s how it started. And then I met up with Ron and [Interscope/Geffen/A&M CEO] Jimmy Iovine who were interested in the concept.”
The Pussycat Dolls
The Pussycat Dolls guest dolls have included Christina Aguilera, Eva Longoria, Nicollette Sheridan, Denise Richards, Pamela Anderson, and Gwen Stefani. The buzz on the concept grew huge in L.A. as a dancing troupe touching on a bit of lounge music. But Iovine had the idea to turn in into a singing group. Now, they’ve taken the concept to television – in search for an additional doll.
Antin made it clear that no one is leaving the current group, made up of six women, including lead singer Nicole Scherzinger, who many assumed would be exiting for a solo career. Scherzinger is finishing up her solo album, but is also putting in work for the PCD’s sophomore disc and has no plans to break from the group anytime soon.
“No one has left the group” Antin clarified. “We’ve got all of our girls; I just always say there just can’t be enough Pussycat Dolls in the world. Now, it’ll be seven girls.”
Seven group members might seem like a lot, but the original singing group launched three years ago with 11.
“It’s not about the number of girls,” Fair said. “We’re just having fun with this concept now and we’re just enjoying our success and playing with the brand.”
Antin and Fair have had an early stake in the Pussycat Dolls, but the two said that they found it a no-brainer to bring in artist Lil’ Kim to be a part of the new show saying that the rapper embodied the idea of the Pussycat Dolls – powerful and sexy.
“I was born a pussycat doll, that’s the bottom line,” Lil’ Kim said of why she should be a part of the search. “When I first stepped on the music scene, everything the Pussycat Dolls are is everything that I’ve developed myself into being. Just the allure of being in front of that camera and able to show your sexiness and sensual side is something that all women like to kind of bring forward at one point in time.”
“When the Pussycat Dolls heard that Lil’ Kim was going to be a part of this, every single one of our girls was just beside themselves with excitement because they are all so inspired by her,” Antin added.
In addition to Antin, Fair, and Lil’ Kim, singer Marc McGrath is on tap to host the show, not to mention, the Pussycat Dolls themselves will make appearances on the show.
“The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the New Doll” will air Tuesdays, 9/8c on the CW. For more, go to the CW website at www.cwtv.com.
