*Fantasia, currently starring in the Broadway production of “The Color Purple,” was announced among the musical performances on tap for the 61st annual Tony Awards ceremony, to be held on June 10 at Radio City Music Hall and broadcast live on CBS.
The ceremony will feature musical numbers from each of the nominees for Best Musical (Curtains, Grey Gardens, Mary Poppins and Spring Awakening) as well as performances by the casts of the currently running Best Musical Revival nominees (A Chorus Line, Company and 110 in the Shade); no number will be performed from The Apple Tree, which closed in March.
Fantasia, who replaced last year’s Tony winner LaChanze as Ms. Celie, will also make an appearance on "Live with Regis & Kelly" tomorrow morning (June 1).
In other “Purple” news, the hit musical at the Broadway Theatre was to welcome its one-millionth audience member during yesterday’s performance. A special announcement was to be made following the curtain call of the May 30 matinee to honor the person who purchased the one-millionth ticket. That patron was to receive The Color Purple One Millionth Patron Grand Prize.
