Michelle Obama

*Michelle Obama escaped injury in Hampton, Iowa Tuesday when a motorcyclist slammed into the van she was riding in.

According to reports, the Illinois senator's wife and five campaign staffers were en route to a rally, where she was to speak on behalf of her husband, presidential candidate Barack Obama.  As they were making a left turn, the van was hit by a motorcycle driven by 40-year-old Tim Emerson.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and suffered injuries. A medical helicopter landed at the scene, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.

Michelle Obama's campaign activities were suspended for the rest of the day. The crowd in Hampton was informed that the rally would be rescheduled.

“Barack and Michelle's thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time,” the Obama campaign said in an e-mailed statement.
