*After sinning up Las Vegas last year, MTV brought their Music Video Awards to Hollywood. The show may have been OK to critics but the streets of Hollywood was invaded.
Taped on the back lot of Paramount Pictures on Melrose, the show featured performances by Rihanna, T.I., Lil’ Wayne, T Pain and Kanye West but before Britney walked out to open the show, the city welcomed dozens of parties that started as early as Wednesday.
944 Magazine hosted their 2nd year anniversary affair at Kress which doubled as a pre VMA jam. Triple K threat, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian hosted the party while select Hollywood “it” girls downed Bombay sapphire. The talk of the night was Khloe’s closeness with Rashad McCants from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Guess she and Kim got at least one thing in common.
Beverly Hills was home to this year’s BMI Urban Awards last Thursday night. The annual award show honored the legendary Jackson 5. Lloyd, Ray J, and Mario were among those who paid homage to the groundbreaking group by covering some of their classics. And possibly the shock and highlight of the night was the award being presented by little sister Janet. For a list of winners check out www.bmi.com.
For those who preferred a different view, the cast of the CW’s 90210 hosted a poolside party at the Roosevelt Hotel. Cast members, directors and your typical VMA crowd celebrated the premier of the show as well as the launch of Nylon Magazine TV. And just around the corner, MTV 3 threw a jam for our latinos in mind. The sounds of newcomers Colby O’Donis and Calle 13 filled the rooms of hotspot Level 3 on Hollywood and Highland. Another newcomer that packed a club that night was Bad Boy artist Donnie Klang. He held a listening party at The Cabana Club.
There was a little something for everybody to do during this 5 day whirlwind. Famed publicist and author of “It Happened in Church,” Patti Webster held a very private and tight- guestlisted soiree at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills on Friday night. Her invite only event drew the likes of Jermaine Dupri and Janet Jackson. No media was allowed.
Yet some did find their way into JD’s Tag Records party at Avalon on Saturday night. The Simmons sisters, DJ Clue, Tamala Jones and of course, Janet tagged the red carpet. Fabolous and Q from Tag Records performed while D-Nice did the spinning.
Sunday’s official after party took place on the back lot of Paramount pictures but for those of us denied access, we had options of partying at LL Cool J’s listening party at Central Hollywood, the Pepsi Blue Carpet at Avalon or G Unit’s after party at S Bar. Who needs tickets to the actual awards when the real party happens at the club?
