JENNIFER HUDSON ASKS FOR CONTINUED PRAYER: Singer posts MySpace message pleading for safe return of 7-year-old nephew.

*As of press time, an Amber Alert was still in effect for the missing nephew of Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson. The actress posted a plea on her MySpace page for his safe return.

It reads: "Thank you all for your prayers and your calls. Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian King back home safely. If anyone has any information about his whereabouts please contact the authorities immediately. Here is a picture of Julian and what he was last seen wearing. Once again thank you all for being there for us through this tough time."

Julian King, 7, has been missing from his South Side Chicago home since the bodies of his grandmother and uncle — 57-year-old Darnell Donerson and 29-year-old Jason Hudson — were discovered Friday by his mother, Julia Balfour, in the home they shared.

• Police are asking Chicago residents to look out for a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859. Julian is described as being 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. He was wearing a striped brown polo shirt and khaki pants when last seen, authorities said in the Amber Alert.

Donerson was found shot on the living room floor, while the body of Jason Hudson was discovered in the bedroom, police said. Their deaths were ruled homicides by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Chicago police spokesman Dan O'Brien says the search for King spans the entire city. But on Sunday, residents and officers were focusing their search efforts "in the immediate vicinity" of Hudson's home.  On Saturday, the FBI was called in to assist in the search for King, in case he had been taken across state lines, in violation of federal kidnap laws.

The FBI confirmed Sunday that Hudson's brother-in-law, William Balfour, was in custody and being treated as a suspect, but charges had yet to be filed. Balfour was married to Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, for several years, but they are currently separated. He has a criminal record and was released from prison in 2006 after serving nearly seven years on various charges, including attempted murder and car hijacking.

"All I ask, I don't care who you are, just let my baby go, please," Julia Balfour, said at a news conference Saturday night. "I just want my son."

William Balfour's mother, Michele Davis-Balfour, told WLS in Chicago that her son had nothing to do with the shootings and urged the public to focus on finding the missing boy.

"Out of no means did my son do this. This heinous crime to this family is unbelievable. It's unbearable," said Davis-Balfour. "Whoever has Jennifer Hudson's nephew or Julia Balfour's son, please, I'm begging you, me and my family are begging you to return that son."

Jennifer Hudson, recently engaged to boyfriend David Otunga, rushed back to Chicago on Friday to identify the bodies of her mother and brother. She had been in Florida on a promotional tour for her new film, "The Secret Life of Bees," and her new self-titled album.

HUDSON'S 'IDOL' FAMILY OFFERS SUPPORT: Randy Jackson, Jon Peter Lewis express condolences.

*"American Idol" judge Randy Jackson is offering support for former contestant Jennifer Hudson in the wake of what authorities are calling a double homicide at her home in Chicago.

"My heart and soul goes out to her and the rest of her family," Jackson tells People. "Such a huge tragedy – I can't even believe that it's possible. Paula Abdul and I were just talking about it yesterday and it's just so sad."

Jackson says he has attempted to contact Hudson since news broke Friday that her mother and brother were shot dead inside of their home, and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was reported missing.

"I left a couple of messages for her and I'm just trying to give to her whatever I can," said Jackson. "My God. The world is an ugly place right now."

Fellow season 3 "American Idol" contestant Jon Peter Lewis, who became close friends during the 2004 competition when both advanced to the top 12, tells People, "I am so bereft of words, just how shocking this is ... how senseless and heartbreaking. My prayers are with Jennifer."

TERRENCE HOWARD SUED FOR ASSAULT: 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' composer claims actor beat him up during rehearsals.

*When it rains, it pours for Terrence Howard. One week after learning through the trades that his "Iron Man 2" role was given to Don Cheadle, the Oscar-nominated actor has been sued for alleged assault.

Composer Andrew "Tex" Allen claims he was beaten up by Howard last winter while working together in Broadway's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, reports the New York Post.  The jazz pianist and brother of "Tin Roof" director, Debbie Allen, seeks $5 million in damages, according to the lawsuit.

He claims Howard stepped to him on Jan. 24 at about 2:30 p.m. as he was sitting at the piano inside of Walter Kerr Theatre. He said Howard punched him repeatedly in the face and head. The lawsuit does not state the reason for the alleged confrontation.

MAYA RUDOLPH BACK ON 'SNL' FOR OBAMA SKIT: Former cast member suits up as Michelle for 'Obama Variety Half-Hour.'

*Maya Rudolph made a "one night only" return to "Saturday Night Live" to play Michelle Obama in a skit about her husband's planned half-hour address on Wednesday, which will be broadcast on all four major networks.

"This airtime was initially purchased so that we could speak to you one last time about the issues," said Rudolph as Mrs. Obama, looking directly into the camera.

"However, with poll numbers putting us so far ahead - we decided now's the time to play it safe," explained Fred Armisen, as Barack Obama. Michelle added: "Instead of a conventional address, we're going to carefully manage our lead and well, shake things up."

At this point, the lights go up, and Ashford & Simpson's "Solid as a Rock" begins to play, with the Obamas singing of their poll numbers, "We built it up, We built it up, and now it's solid….solid as Barack."

ALASKA'S BIGGEST NEWSPAPER ENDORSES OBAMA:  'Palin's rise captivates us but nation needs a steady hand,' says Anchorage Daily News.

*The hometown newspaper of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin says thanks, but no thanks by announcing its endorsement of her rival, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, for president.

"Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency -- but it does not overwhelm all other judgment," the paper stated Saturday. "The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation."

"Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office," the paper continues. "In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain."

The Daily News goes on to praise Obama for his plan of action involving the mortgage crisis, stating: "Sen. Obama warned regulators and the nation 19 months ago that the subprime lending crisis was a disaster in the making. Sen. McCain backed tighter rules for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but didn't do much to advance that legislation. Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown's root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it.

"It is easy to look at Sen. Obama and see a return to the smart, bipartisan economic policies of the last Democratic administration in Washington, which left the country with the momentum of growth and a budget surplus that President George Bush has squandered."

As for Gov. Palin, the Daily News says, "despite her formidable gifts, few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful nation on earth. To step in and juggle the demands of an economic meltdown, two deadly wars and a deteriorating climate crisis would stretch the governor beyond her range. Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time."

PHIFE DAWG GETS A NEW KIDNEY: Rapper undergoes surgery to fight debilitating diabetes.

*Allhiphop.com is reporting that Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest has at last received a kidney transplant in his ongoing battle with diabetes.

The rapper had been on a waiting list for the past two years following his initial diagnosis in May of 1990, the Web site reported.

The Queens native said his lax attitude toward proper diet, and continued consumption of fats, sweets and alcohol, caused his condition to worsen rapidly.  By 1992, he started to be debilitated by the illness, with his blood sugar level reaching fatal levels of near 1000 mg/dl, well over the normal 80-120 mg/dl.

Phife was put on dialysis in 2000, and hospitalized two years later after the condition continued to worsen.

With the new kidney, Phife’s Tribe bandmate Q-Tip says he's already showing improvement.

“He’s doing great!” Q-Tip told Allhiphop.com. “He just had a successful kidney transplant so shouts out to Phife diggity dog! That’s my n***a right there.”

ROBIN ROBERTS HONORED BY CANCER CENTER: 'GMA' host rewarded for sharing journey with TV audiences.

*"Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts was honored in Buffalo, New York Saturday for deciding to share her personal fight against breast cancer with millions of television viewers.

The TV personality received the 2008 Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Gilda Radner Courage Award, named after the late comedian in recognition of cancer patients whose public battles offer hope and raise awareness of the disease.

Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. She credited her former colleague, film critic Joel Siegel, with helping to save her life. His death from colon cancer in 2007 made her more mindful of the disease and helped her detect her cancer early.

She says: "Because of his passion, I did it. I found out I had cancer and was able to handle it."

POLICE ACCUSE ISIAH THOMAS OF 'COVER UP': Former Knicks coach claims overdose reports were about his daughter; not himself.

*Shortly after news broke Friday that Isiah Thomas may have been rushed to the hospital after overdosing on sleeping pills, the former New York Knicks coach said it was not him, but rather his 17-year-old daughter, who was hospitalized.

Local authorities, meanwhile, are outraged that Thomas would make such a comment, and are referring to it as a "cover up."

"It wasn't his daughter," Harrison Police Chief David Hall told The Associated Press. "And why they're throwing her under the bus is beyond my ability to understand."

As previously reported, authorities were called early Friday to Thomas' Westchester County home, where police said a 47-year-old man was taken to the hospital and treated for an overdose of sleeping pills. Several media outlets reported that police confirmed it was Thomas who went to the hospital.

But reached on his cell phone Friday, the 47-year-old NBA veteran told the New York Post he had not been treated for a sleeping pill overdose, and that it was his daughter Lauren who had a medical issue.

It "wasn't an overdose," he told the newspaper. "My daughter is very down right now. None of us are OK."

       Hall forcefully refuted Thomas' statement.

"My cops ... know the difference between a 47-year-old black male and a young black female," Hall said. "These people should learn something from Richard Nixon — it's not the crime, it's the cover-up."

Thomas' 20-year-old son, Joshua, has come out in defense of his father's initial statement about his sister having the overdose.

"Saying that someone is being thrown under the bus when you are talking about health issues is disrespectful," the Indiana University student wrote in a text to the New York Daily News regarding Hall's comments. "I love both my sister and dad and am glad that both are doing well. Thanks for all the support, but as a family we are fine and stronger than ever."

No suicide note was found, and police were classifying the case as an "accidental drug overdose" on "a number" of prescription sleeping pills, Hall said, however, he stillwould not confirm the identity of the hospitalized man.

Thomas was fired as the Knicks' coach April 18 after a dismal season, a scandalous sexual harassment lawsuit and unending chants from fans demanding his dismissal. Still, he was retained by the organization as an adviser and consultant.

"Isiah Thomas spoke with members of the New York Knicks organization and is OK," the Knicks said in a statement. "He is dealing with a family matter, and we will have no further comment. He has asked that we respect his privacy, and we will."

'DWTS' PREPPED MONIQUE COLEMAN FOR 'HSM 3': Actress gets her waltz on in film's prom scene.

By Cameron Turner

*Monique Coleman, who plays brainiac student leader Taylor McKessie in the “High School Musical” movies, loves to dance.  She just doesn’t like being judged while she’s doing it.

She discovered that during her 2006 stint on “Dancing With the Stars.”  Coleman’s passion for performing propelled her into the top four, but she never vibed with the contest aspect of the show.

“One thing I learned is that I am not a competitive person.  I only compete with myself.  So, that sort of platform…isn’t really suited for my personality,” explains the versatile entertainer and DePaul University graduate.

At the time Coleman had no way of knowing that “Dancing With the Stars” was prepping her for the third and final “High School Musical” flick. When director and choreographer Kenny Ortega announced that the young cast would have to waltz for a prom scene in “HSM3,” a lot of the actors got nervous.  (Leading lady Vanessa Hudgens thought Ortega was joking at first and she says the waltz was “the most difficult dance that I’ve had to do throughout these three movies.”)  But Monique was excited.  She knew she could handle the dance and she loved the idea of adding old school elegance to a movie about teenagers.

“Whatever you expose kids to is what they’re going to absorb,” Coleman opines. “If you expose them to (a dance) that is very difficult and does require trust and does require you to be intimately close to someone without it being sexual then I think we’re really sending out an awesome message.” Coleman believes that “High School Musical 3” also has a message for
parents:  take some of the pressure off of your kids!

“We’re living in a time when kids need to know what they want to do by the time that they’re 7 and that’s ridiculous,” Coleman declares.  “What this movie does is it says is that you don’t need to know by the time you’re 18… you have a whole world of possibilities that lay before you and ultimately the only thing that is important is that you do make a choice and that the choice is yours.”

BOW WOW VISITS 'NEW JACK CITY' ON UPCOMING CD: Rapper's new album due in December.

The follow up to 2006's "The Price of Fame" will be released Dec. 16 via Columbia and is led by the single "Marco Polo" featuring Soulja Boy, reports Billboard.

Other tracks on "New Jack City Part II" include the Jermaine Dupri-produced "Sunshine," a video for which is coming in early November, and "Big Girls," which is circulating virally.

Bow Wow is planning to support the release with a mini version of his Scream tour, with dates to be announced. In addition, the hip hop star appears in the current season of HBO's "Entourage" and will be seen in the film "Hurricane Season," which opens Dec. 25 in U.S. theaters.

BRAXTON 'COMES TO TERMS' WITH SON'S AUTISM: Singer says she spent years wondering 'Is there something I did wrong?'

*Entertainer Toni Braxton says for years she was filled with confusion and guilt following the 2006 diagnosis of her youngest son, Diezel Ky, 5 ½, with autism.

"You tend to blame yourself," the singer admits in the Oct. 27 issue of People, adding that she tortured herself with the question: "Is there something I did wrong?"

The recent "Dancing With the Stars" contestant says it took some time and a lot of patience to accept her son's condition.

"A lot of times, parents are in denial because they want to think their child is perfect," says Braxton, 41. Over time, however, she was able to "come to terms" with the diagnosis and with the help of an applied behavioral analysis (ABA) specialist who works with Diezel both at home and at school, Toni's family appears to have brighter days ahead.

"A friend of mine told me, 'Toni, all these autistic kids in the world now, they are God's new angels, and they are here to show us life differently.' I've been embracing that," she says. "He's a wonderful kid."

JANET SAYS SHE FEELS 'A LOT BETTER': Singer in boyfriend's YouTube video thanking fans for support during recent illness.

*Janet Jackson is thanking fans for the well-wishes that poured in during her bout with vertigo-induced migraines. The condition caused her to postpone a string of dates on her current "Rock Witchu" tour.

"I want to thank you for all your messages and all your love and support when I wasn't feeling very well," the singer said in the clip shot by her boyfriend Jermaine Dupri before her show in Houston last week. "I'm a lot better now."

Later in the clip, the couple attempts to downplay rumors that the two were toward splitsville.

"Baby, they say you broke up with me because I threw up on you," a laughing Dupri said as he held the camera.

"How lame is that?" Jackson deadpanned. "Because you threw up on me? Well, there's no real love there, is it?"

APOLLO THEATER TEAMS WITH COLUMBIA U.: Partnership to help safeguard Harlem landmark as a 'cultural institution.'

*Harlem's Apollo Theater has teamed with Columbia University to create an oral history of the world-famous landmark, a move done amidst controversy that the school's expansion is threatening the solidarity of the surrounding Harlem neighborhood.

The project, described as "an effort to spotlight and safeguard one of New York's most important cultural institutions," is planned for the theater's 75th anniversary in 2009 and will include online and on-site exhibitions, an educational program for public school students and an archive of audio and video interviews with Apollo performers such as Smokey Robinson, Leslie Uggams and Fred Wesley, reports Variety.

Columbia has announced plans to expand uptown from its 120th Street borders, building $6.3 billion worth of new facilities between W. 125th Street (just west of the Apollo) and W. 134th over the next 25 years.

Local residents are dreading the inevitable uptick in prices, and individual businesses have been hurried out of the 17-acre area, which the Empire State Development Corp. declared blighted in July, making way for the expansion.

Columbia president Lee Bollinger has stated his intent to keep the community involved in the process, and the university estimates that the new campus will create some 6,000 new jobs in the area.

The film is based on the novel "Shooter" by award-winning children's book author Walter Dean Myers and centers on the aftermath of a high school shooting from the perspective of three misfit teens, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Evan Ross is among the supporting cast, joining Leven Rambin and Taylor Nichols. Leslie Hope is in negotiations.

Perrineau recently wrapped up starring in and executive producing the indie film "The Killing Jar" with Michael Madsen and next appears in the upcoming ABC drama "The Unusuals."

*"Ugly Betty" actress Vanessa Williams has come out in defense of guest star Lindsay Lohan amid reports that a feud with lead America Ferrera cut her scheduled six-episode visit to four. "That's what the press does, that's what gossip's about, and media is about," Williams told WENN. "I had a few scenes with Lindsay. In terms of me working with Lindsay, she was professional, she knew her lines and she was great with me."

*Lil Boosie was arrested in his hometown of Baton Rouge on Wednesday and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance and resisting an officer. MCCAIN VOLUNTEER MADE UP ATTACK STORY: Police say she faked account of being assaulted and mutilated by black Obama supporter.

*A campaign worker for John McCain admitted Friday that she made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" carved into her face in a politically inspired attack, police said.

Ashley Todd, a 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, is being charged in Pittsburgh with making a false police report, according to Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division.

Todd, who is white, initially told police she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night, reports CBSNews.com. She told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM when the man approached her from behind, put a knife with a 4- to 5-inch blade to her throat and demanded money. She said she handed the man $60 and walked away.

Todd claimed that she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car, became angry and punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground and telling her "you are going to be a Barack [Obama] supporter," police said.

She said he continued to punch and kick her while threatening "to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter," police said. She said he then sat on her chest, pinned her hands down with his knees and scratched a backward letter "B" into her face with a dull knife.

Todd also told police she didn't seek medical attention, but instead went to a friend's apartment nearby and called police about 45 minutes later.

After admitting she had fabricated the story, Todd told police she believes she cut the backward "B" onto her own cheek, but she didn't explain how or why, Bryant said.

"She said she doesn't remember doing it but knows it must have been her who did it," Bryant said, according to the Tribune-Review.

Todd, who worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, reportedly said she thought of Barack Obama when she saw the "B" on her cheek and minutes later "came up with a plan" to manufacture the story, according to Bryant. She now tells investigators she was neither robbed nor attacked.

"We had some serious cases going on, and this wasted so much time," Bryant said. "Our detectives have been working through the night just to verify the information we suspected was false from the beginning."

Bryant said somebody charged with making a false report would typically be cited and sent a summons. But because police have concerns about Todd's mental health, they are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney. She remained in custody and was awaiting arraignment.

EUR FILM REVIEW: Oliver Stone's W.
Oliver Stone Chronicles Bush’s Checkered Career with Damning Bio-Pic

Film Review by Kam Williams

*Oliver Stone has never been afraid to court controversy, and this bio-pic is no exception. The iconoclastic director has made presidential docudramas before (JFK and Nixon), but W. is the first about one still in office.

This incendiary offering is apt to be appreciated or reviled along party lines for it paints a most unflattering picture of George W. Bush as a spoiled-rotten nincompoop who has been a miserable failure at his every endeavor.

For, once it breezes past his early adult years frittered away as a boozing, womanizing embarrassment to his family, it settles down to focus on his copious shortcomings, first, as a businessman, and then as a politician.

Along the way, we’re treated mostly to W’s familiar fiascos, such as his much-publicized, ill-fated forays into the oil and baseball businesses. So, the movie doesn’t really make any new revelations, unless you were unaware that he got a girl pregnant, was arrested for drunk driving and has been a bitter disappoint to his father (James Cromwell), former president George Herbert Walker Bush.

The film is at its best only after a Born Again Junior cleans up his act, marries Laura (Elizabeth Banks), and makes the fateful decision to enter politics. Once he ascends to the presidency, we find him surrounded in the White House by a cast of infamous characters including Karl Rove (Toby Jones), Vice President Cheney (Richard Dreyfuss), Dr.
Condoleezza Rice (Thandie Newton), Secretary of State Colin Powell (Jeffrey Wright), Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Scott Glenn) and CIA Director George Tenet (Bruce McGill).

What makes the story fascinating at this juncture is that it takes a “fly-on-the-wall” approach to confirm the country’s worst fears about the shady shenanigans among members of the administration. For example, we see Rove as the ever-scheming brains behind the throne while Cheney is exposed as a power-hungry maniac who felt that the Patriot Act didn’t go far enough. Rice, Powell and Tenet are presented as weak-kneed sycophants who consciously compromised their integrity by beating the drums of war, knowing full well that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction.

Still, the worst criticism is reserved for Bush, who is positioned as a clueless chimpleton-in-chief more than willing to hand the reigns of government over to his vice president so he could be free to eat junk food and watch sports on TV. A damning biography magnifying the worst traits of the president with the lowest approval rating in history.

Talk about beating a man when he’s down in the polls!

Very Good (3 stars)
Rated PG-13 for profanity, sexual references, smoking, alcohol abuse and disturbing war images.
Running time: 131 minutes
