OBAMA WANTS ERIC HOLDER FOR ATTY GEN: Washington attorney was No. 2 official in Justice Dept. under President Clinton.
*President-elect Barack Obama has his sights set on Washington attorney Eric Holder to serve as his attorney general. According to the Associated Press, Obama's transition aides have gone so far as to ask senators whether he would be confirmed.
Holder, a former U.S. attorney who served as the No. 2 official in the Justice Department under President Bill Clinton, would be the nation's first black attorney general.
Also a former judge and U.S. attorney in Washington, Holder is widely respected in legal circles and among Justice Department career lawyers. He has been on Obama's short list to be attorney general since before the election, and already has had private conversations about how he would run the department.
A potential snag in Holder's confirmation would be his involvement in the 2001 pardon of fugitive Marc Rich by Clinton at the end of his presidency.
Rich was a wealthy commodities dealer who had spent years running from tax charges. Holder said he was "neutral, leaning toward favorable" on the pardon. Clinton later cited that as among the factors that persuaded him to issue the pardon.
Among Holder's fans is Rev. Al Sharpton, who issued a statement Tuesday praising Obama's attorney general choice as "a great step toward bringing responsible change to this country at this juncture in history."
"When he served as deputy attorney general we worked with him on his review of the Amadou Diallo police shooting case in New York and other civil rights cases down through the years," said Sharpton. "He has been balanced in his support of law enforcement as well as his support for accountability of law enforcement. I think that his appointment is one that both the law enforcement and the civil rights community can exhale and says that someone that is fair and open will take the top law enforcement seat in Washington."
PRINCE SUED OVER HIS 3121 PERFUME: Plus, Prince tribute band Purple Reign rocks 'David Letterman.'
*Prince and his music publisher Universal are being sued for breach-of-contract by the makers of his 3121 fragrance for failing to help market the product as both parties had agreed, reports the Associated Press.
In the lawsuit, filed Monday in New York, Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc. claims it spent $2.5 million on the product and agreed to pay Universal half of profits made from sales of the perfume. According to the company, Universal and Prince have not participated in promotions since the fragrance was launched in July 2007.
Universal spokesman Peter LoFrumento calls the claims "completely without merit."
In other Prince news, Monday's "Late Show with David Letterman" featured Prince tribute band Purple Reign performing "Let's Go Crazy," marking the first time the show has ever invited a cover band to play.

MIJAC TOO SICK TO GET ON AN AIRPLANE?: Singer a no-show at London breach-of-contract trial; lawyer says he's too ill to fly.
*An attorney for Michael Jackson said Tuesday that the pop star might be too sick to fly to London and testify in a breach-of-contract lawsuit that claims he owes an Arab sheikh millions of dollars.
Jackson's camp is seeking to give his testimony by video link from the United States.
"It would be unwise for him to travel, given what's he's got now," lawyer Robert Englehart said, declining to elaborate "for the obvious reasons."
Al Khalifa's lawyer, Bankim Thanki, called Jackson's submitted medical evidence "very unsatisfactory" and argued his illness could be treated with a bandage "if the diagnosis is positive."
"It's not the first time a sick note has been presented by Mr. Jackson," Thanki said, also without elaborating.
The judge, Nigel Sweeny, said he would decide the matter Thursday to allow time for medical experts on both legal teams to talk.
Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain, claims that Jackson reneged on a contract for an album, an autobiography and a stage play, after accepting $7 million from the sheikh.
Al Khalifa also claims he spent $2.2 million for Jackson to produce a song in aid of the victims of 2005's Hurricane Katrina - but he failed to turn up for the final recording session. He also alleges he gave Jackson financial support, paying his living and travel expenses during his stay in Bahrain following his child molestation trial.
Jackson's lawyer denies the claims, insisting their agreement was not valid and that Al Khalifa's case is based on "mistake, misrepresentation and undue influence."
Meanwhile, Fox411 columnist Roger Friedman wrote of Jackson's alleged illness Tuesday: "If this is like his famous “spider bite” from his 2003 trial in Santa Maria for another breach of contract, Justice Sweeney should be suspicious. A very inside source insisted to this column years ago that the 'spider bite' was caused by other activities and that no insects were involved. And of course, Michael famously tried to get out of his child molestation trial a couple of times by going to the hospital — once in his pajamas. Of course, Justice Sweeney should be suspect if Jackson’s “doctor’s note” comes from one Dr. Tohme Tohme. That’s Michael’s publicist, not his physician."
FOREST WHITAKER HEADS TO 'BRICK CITY': Actor to executive produce documentary on struggles facing Newark, N.J.
*The Sundance Channel is teaming with Forest Whitaker to produce "Brick City," a new documentary series that takes an in-depth look at the challenges facing Newark, N.J., and its mayor, Cory Booker.
The film will also follow local citizens and key figures -- from real estate developers to ex-gang members -- as they try to remake the city, working to stamp out violence, poverty and corruption and make improvements in housing, employment and education.
Whitaker, the Oscar-winning star of "The Last King of Scotland," will serve as an executive producer with the series' directors, Marc Levin ("Slam") and Mark Benjamin ("The Last Party"), according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The series, which will take place over the span of about a year so viewers can see whether things change, is scheduled to debut with six half-hour episodes in the third quarter of 2009.
Sundance executive vp/GM Laura Michalchyshyn said Whitaker is a "huge supporter of this project and of Newark," but that it was too early to determine if he might provide voice-over for the series.
NBC TO MAKE 'FRIENDS WITH BLACK PEOPLE': Network developing sitcom about race relations in the U.S.
*A buddy comedy based on the 2006 book "Making Friends With Black People," about the state of race relations in the U.S., is being developed as a sitcom for NBC, reports Variety.
Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, executive producers of CW's "The Game," will write the script and executive produce the project.
The book's author, Nick Adams, hopes the show can capitalize on how the election of Barack Obama as the country's first African American president has changed the nation's dialogue on race.
"From time to time, race bubbles up in the consciousness of the country and then dissipates," said Adams. "Now, with Obama, people are talking about race a lot more. We hope to capitalize on that and not let the dialogue die down. ... It seemed like a good opportunity to strike while the iron is hot."
"Making Friends" will center on two guys -- one African-American and one white -- who become close friends, but who don't necessarily see things the same way. Adams, a standup comic, wrote the book as a humorous look at how people dance around issues of race. He'll serve as a co-producer on the project, while Industry's Dianne Fraser and Eryn Brown will be co-exec producers.
DIDDY TO 'FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE' FOR CBS: Mogul set to guest star on 'CSI Miami.'
*Sean "Diddy" Combs will join "CSI: Miami" for a two-episode appearance set to air in mid- to late winter, CBS announced Tuesday.
The Bad Boy founder will play a prosecutor who butts heads with Lt. Horatio Caine, played by David Caruso.
Diddy follows in the footsteps of fellow rap star Nelly, who had a recurring role this season on "CSI: New York."
The rap mogul's last television appearance was in the ABC movie "A Raisin in the Sun."
SNOOP PAYS VISIT TO MARTHA STEWART: Rapper appears on daytime program to plug new season of 'Father Hood.'
*Snoop Dogg finally got his wish to be a guest of Martha Stewart on her daytime talk show. [Scroll down to watch entire two-part interview.]
Ever since the two met backstage at the "Late Show with David Letterman," Snoop has been e-mailing her regularly about getting a spot on the program. On Tuesday afternoon, Stewart got a kick out of reading some of those correspondences, which were laced with his particular gangsta slang.
While helping to prepare mashed potatoes using a recipe from Stewart's mom, Mrs. Kostyra, Snoop shared with the host his five essential vocabulary words to get through life, which included 'fo-shizzle' and 'crack-a-lackin.'
He also admitted that "in the hood" he doesn't make mashed potatoes with an electric mixer... or know how to peel potatoes.

DON CHEADLE INKS FIRST LOOK DEAL: Actor's Crescendo Prods. partners with Overture Films for two years.
*Don Cheadle's Crescendo Productions has signed a two-year first-look deal with Overture Films, Variety reported Tuesday, noting that the pact reunites him with the producers of Overture's "Traitor," which stars the actor.
Crescendo's projects include the documentary "Darfur Now" and a Miles Davis biopic that's in development.
The shingle, also headed by Cheadle's partners Lenore Zerman and Kay Liberman, will remain in offices outside Overture's Beverly Hills headquarters, but will work closely with Overture CEO Chris McGurk and chief operating officer Danny Rosett.
Cheadle's connections to McGurk and Rosett also pre-date the first-look deal, as his film "Hotel Rwanda" was co-distributed by MGM while the pair headed the studio.
UNIVERSAL PLOTTING ANOTHER 'NUTTY PROFESSOR': Open call reportedly out to writers for third installment.
*A third film in the "Nutty Professor" franchise, which starred Eddie Murphy as a scientist who turns obnoxious after trying one of his own cures, is reportedly being planned by Universal and Imagine Entertainment.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, an open call is out to writers for their take on a potential third installment based on the 1963 original starring Jerry Lewis.
Murphy is not attached to a new "Nutty"; his involvement would be contingent on the writer, director and other elements. Murphy's ability to play multiple characters was seen as key to the success of the two "Nutty"
movies, and it seems unlikely that a third installment could go forward without him.
The sequel to 1996's "The Nutty Professor," titled "The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps," was less successful than its predecessor, earning $162 million worldwide vs. the $270 million of the first installment.
RASHIDA JONES BACK ON FAMILIAR GROUND: Actress to star in spinoff to her previous sitcom, "The Office."
*Actress Rashida Jones, who had a role on "The Office" for a year, was just hired by that show's creators and NBC to star in the spinoff that will be headed by "Saturday Night Live" veteran Amy Poehler, reports the New York Post.
Jones, the daughter of legendary music producer Quincy Jones, played the romantic interest of John Krasinski's character Jim in 24 episodes of "The Office" during the 2006-07 season. She and Krasinski started dating in real life after meeting on the set.
The untitled spinoff, also starring Aziz Ansari, is scheduled to premiere after Super Bowl XLIII along with a new episode of "The Office." The series will then shift into the regular timeslot of Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.
Details of the series are being kept a secret and will be released at a later date.
DAMON DASH ALLEGES JAY-Z/KANYE FEUD: Former mogul claims it started at 2003 concert; West's rep says story is 'ridiculous.'
*Kanye West's camp is denying claims made by Damon Dash in December's Complex magazine suggesting that Jay-Z's refusal to give his Roc-A-Fella chain to West at a 2003 concert sparked a longstanding beef between the two rappers.
Dash tells Complex that in 2003, the then-up-and-coming West expected ruling Roc-A-Fella artist Jay to "knight" him by presenting him with the diamond chain as a sign of acceptance into the label's family. But, according to Dash, Jay didn't want to give it up.
"This ni**a [Kanye] was like, 'Wow. [Jay-Z] ain't going to give me the chain,'" Dash tells Complex. "I had to take off my chain and give it to him, and I was heated. I had the real canary diamonds. That sh** cost $40,000! I told Kanye, 'Yo, you got to give that back when we get off this stage!'"
Dash contends that after Jay-Z violated the code of hip-hop chivalry, "Kanye hated Jay-Z." But a rep for West told the New York Daily News that the whole story is "ridiculous and totally false."
"This is sad," the paper quotes of the source. "Damon does this every time he's promoting an artist. He just makes things up. They're both on [Def Jam]," the source continues. "They're friends and always have been."
The paper quotes another "hip-hop insider" who adds: "No one has ever said that Kanye hated Jay. [West, Jay-Z and Dash] were all together at one point every single day. To say he hated him back then is silly."
"Damon wants to blow [Jim Jones] up," the source agreed, noting that Dash is producing a documentary about Jones in which Dash introduces the rapper to influential acquaintances, like Vogue editor Anna Wintour. "We'll see how this plays out."
The full interview with Dash and Jones is available at Complex.com.
JESSE JACKSON TALKS OBAMA AT BALTIMORE CHURCH: Rev. says president-elect 'represents a chance to start over.'
*During a visit to Baltimore's Bethel AME Church Sunday, Rev. Jesse Jackson said the election of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is cause for celebration but that "substance" must follow.
According to The Baltimore Sun, Jackson told churchgoers his relationship with Obama was a good one, despite a highly publicized remark caught by microphones in which he said he wanted to castrate him for "talking down to black people" when calling for black fathers to take more responsibility for their families.
He said Obama's presidency "represents a chance to start over," The Sun reported, and expressed concerns that outgoing Bush administration may cause economic harm by backing ill-conceived taxpayer bailouts for the financial industry.
Instead, Jackson called for help for the ailing U.S. auto industry and for urban and rural restructuring to end racial injustice, the newspaper said.

AUTOPSY INCONCLUSIVE ON PAULA ABDUL FAN: Toxicology to take 'six to eight weeks' for woman found dead outside star's home.
*An autopsy on the Paula Abdul fan discovered dead in her car outside of the entertainer's Beverly Hills home last week has been conducted, but an official cause of death is on hold until toxicology tests can be completed.
Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles coroner's office tells E! News the toxicology screenings "will take six to eight weeks."
Although Goodspeed's brother said Thursday that her body would be released to the family Saturday and flown home to Maine for burial, MacWillie says the remains are still with the coroner.
"The body is ready to be released," said MacWillie, "but the legal next of kin [still] has to make arrangements with a mortuary."
Police suspect Goodspeed's death was the result of a suicide. Just months ago, she reportedly tried to commit suicide by overdosing on pills, also in a car parked on Abdul's street, E! News reported.
LABELLE ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL REUNION TOUR: Opening night is Dec. 19 at the Apollo Theater.

The Apollo gig is on Dec. 19 and is followed by stops in Chicago, Atlantic City, Detroit, Los Angeles, Oakland, Washington D.C. and Atlanta.
The Los Angeles Times last month called Labelle "a phenomenon whose music helped change the very idea of what pop and the artists who made it -- especially women singers previously confined to 'girl groups' -- could be."
Billboard says it's the combination of "LaBelle's soaring sass, Hendryx's rock-edged stance and Dash's earthy accents" that make for a unique and electrifying combination not to be missed.

CONSTANCE BRISCOE SUED BY MOM OVER MEMOIR: Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell claims daughter's accounts of child abuse are fiction.
*British author Constance Briscoe, who wrote a popular book recounting a childhood of emotional and physical abuse, is being sued for libel by her mother, who says the claims are fantasy, reports the Associated Press.
Briscoe, the child of Jamaican immigrants, defends the veracity of her book, "Ugly" — the nickname she says her mother threw at her as a child.
In the book, Briscoe alleges that her mother regularly beat and starved her before abandoning her when she was 13. She claims her stepfather once stubbed a cigarette out on her hand, and says that as a teenager Briscoe needed surgery on her breasts because of trauma caused by her mother's assaults.
Her lawyer told London's High Court on Tuesday that the book contained some errors but was "quite properly put in the biography section of the bookshop, not the fiction section."
Her mother, Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell, 74, insists that the harrowing incidents described in the book are fiction. She is seeking damages from Briscoe and her publisher, Hodder and Stoughton.
Briscoe-Mitchell's lawyer, William Panton, told the court the allegations of abuse were "nonsense" and said that as a child Briscoe had not complained to police, social services or teachers.
"There were opportunities to complain about ill-treatment — if that ill-treatment had in fact taken place," he said.
"Ugly" has sold more than half a million copies in Britain since it was published in 2006. It was followed by a sequel, "Beyond Ugly."
Briscoe, 51, grew up in a poor part of London but went on to become a lawyer and one of the first black women in Britain to be appointed a recorder, or part-time judge. The court case is expected to last two weeks.

EUR DVD REVIEW: Tropic Thunder
Controversial Ben Stiller Action Comedy Comedy Comes to DVD
DVD Review by Kam Williams
*You know you're asking for trouble when you make a movie with a white actor in blackface wearing a lower lip extension who's always talking jive jibberish, and with a mentally-challenged character who is repeatedly teased about his disability. Consequently, it's no surprise that this comedy, written and directed by Ben Stiller, would stir up so much controversy.
Superficially, the storyline sounds innocuous enough. It revolves around a Vietnam War flick being shot on location. Early on, we learn that each of the film's stars has his own selfish reason for participating in the project. One (Stiller) is trying to rebound from a poorly-reviewed picture.
Heroin-addict Jeff (Jack Black) wants to overhaul his image after a kiddie hit filled with fat and fart jokes.
An Oscar-winner (Robert Downey, Jr.) likes the challenge of playing an African-American, while Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) is a hot hip-hop artist out to parlay his musical success into a screen career. Finally, there's a virtual unknown (Jay Baruchel) who's just happy to get his big break.
However, disaster strikes soon after their arrival in Southeast Asia, when the director (Steve Coogan) is blown to bits by a land mine. It turns out that they've been mistaken as enemy invaders by bloodthirsty guerillas running a drug-smuggling operation. So suddenly, these clueless, pampered Hollywood actors suddenly have to fend for themselves in the jungle.
This provides plenty of fodder for a surprisingly clever satire of the war movie genre. For Tropic Thunder is an intelligent and frequently funny film with some profound points to make about the shallowness of the movie industry. Unfortunately, those relatively-subtle insights are likely to be lost on those too busy laughing at all the slapstick and cruel humor coming at the expense of minorities to bother to appreciate the movie's deeper message.
