ANN COULTER GOES AFTER MICHELLE OBAMA: Right winger labels her a Jackie O imitator in new book.
*Conservative political commentator Ann Coulter has turned her right wing hot air toward the incoming First Lady, calling Michelle Obama a Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wannabe in a book to be published next week.
In "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and their Assault on America," from Crown Forum, Coulter accuses the liberal left of playing the victim when in fact, she argues, they are the victimizers, according to excerpts carried by the New York Daily News.
Singling out the President-elect's wife, Coulter wrote, "Her obvious imitation of Jackie O's style - the flipped-under hair, the sleeveless A-line dresses, the short strands of fake pearls - would have been laughable if done by anyone other than a media-designated saint."
Coulter said Cindy McCain, the wife of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, "dressed well without freakishly imitating famous First Ladies in history."
The author goes on to sarcastically refer to Michelle Obama as a "saint" and "Mother Teresa" and suggests that her public service career "advanced in lockstep with the political advancement of her husband."
Meanwhile, Coulter repeatedly refers to the President-elect as "B. Hussein Obama" and complains that the media "literally wanted to have sex with him."
KATT WILLIAMS RIPS HARVEY ON NEW YEAR'S EVE: As promised, comedian calls out veteran on stage during joint show. Footage hits YouTube.
*Comedian Katt Williams took his animosity toward Steve Harvey to the stage on New Year's Eve and, as promised, spent part of his act ridiculing the veteran comedian who had performed just before him.
"Please give it up for Steve Harvey one time. He's an excellent comedian. One of the finest we've ever had," Williams said to begin his set. "But he don't want no parts of this in any way shape, form or fashion. This is some other s***."
"I don't know why he came out here, with all this money yall spent on these mother f****n' tickets, and talked about a lady in the audience for 15 god***n minutes," Williams continued. "That n**** should've talked about me the way I'm fittin' to talk about his b****-made…" (the rest was drowned out by audience cheers).
Williams went on to talk about Harvey's hair ("You see he had to take off his lace front high top fade before he came out her to battle me."), his outfit ("Wearing that ugly-ass, sparkly-ass tie with a regular black suit like he was going to a funeral. Yours, n****, yours!), and his age ("He was the s*** in 1968, but I'm the s*** this evening.")
In other Katt news, the comic purchased a six-bedroom, seven-bath home at 20515 Abercrombie Lane in Malibu over the summer from for $3.33 million. The 8,259-square-foot home was built in 2005.
JANET UPSET WITH BEYONCE?: Ms. Jackson apparently took offense to Bey's comments about Jackson family in Elle magazine.
*The New York Daily News claims Janet Jackson is "infuriated" by Beyonce's comments about her famous family in the latest issue of Elle magazine.
In the new January 2009 cover story, Beyonce attempts to explain the differences between her road to stardom and the more common route taken by black performers who struggled economically during childhood.
"I grew up upper class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar," said Beyonce. "We're African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we're like the Jacksons, but I didn't have parents using me to get out of a bad situation."
Jackson, who was born in the working class area of Gary, Ind., is reportedly so offended by the comment that she is planning to confront the singer, claims the Daily News.

QUEEN LATIFAH ROBBED OF BLING IN TOBAGO: Thieves reportedly took off with more than $10,000 worth of jewelry from villa.
*Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday is reporting that Queen Latifah was the victim of theft last Monday after someone stole more than $10,000 in jewelry from her villa in Tobago.
The actress/singer, born Dana Owens, was vacationing with a female friend at the $1,000-per-night Stone Haven Villas in Black Rock, Tobago, when burglars struck on Monday, the paper reported.
Latifah reportedly checked in under the name Cynthia Hadden. According to the newspaper, she returned from a barbecue brunch held in her honor by the establishment's management to discover a bracelet, two gold rings, a gold chain and a silver ring had disappeared from her room. Police were called to the resort after staff security conducted a search of the estate.
Police Commissioner James Philbert tells Newsday: "Several searches are being carried out and the police are trying to have the jewelry returned to Queen Latifah. Investigators said the larceny seems to be an inside job and efforts are being made round the clock to make a breakthrough.”
The rapper was reportedly upset over the theft as she stated the jewelry had sentimental value and that she would be willing to offer a reward for its return.
OBAMA PUSHES FOR NATIONAL SERVICE: Inaugural committee to launch Web site linking volunteers with service projects beyond MLK day.
*President-elect Barack Obama is looking to expand Martin Luther King Day from its current national day of community service into an ongoing commitment to help the needy.
In the coming days, Obama's inaugural committee will launch a Web site to link volunteers with service projects in their neighborhoods. The new Web site will incorporate similar work already begun by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency overseeing 7,000 service programs - including AmeriCorps, given the directive by Congress in 1994 to turn Martin Luther King Day into a national day of service.
"President-elect Obama hopes to summon a new spirit of service and call on Americans to make a more enduring and active commitment to our communities throughout the year, because it is a critical time for America to come together to tackle the common challenges we face," said inaugural spokeswoman Shannon Gilson.
Meanwhile, all four members of the soon-to-be First Family are in Washington D.C., their new permanent home for the next four – possibly eight – years.
Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha flew to Washington on Saturday, while President-elect Barack Obama was due to arrive yesterday. They are staying at the Hay-Adams Hotel until the Jan. 20 inauguration.
Today, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, are scheduled to begin classes at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School. The Obama girls will have Vice-President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren as classmates.
WILL SMITH TOPS 2008 CELEB MONEYMAKERS: Actor outranks Downey Jr., Bale and LaBeouf.
*Will Smith has been voted the Top Money-Making Star of 2008 in Quigley Publishing Company's 77th Annual Poll and is the second African American to win since Sidney Poitier was first in 1968.
Smith, whose 2008 slate included "Hancock" and "Seven Pounds," placed second to Johnny Depp last year. This is Smith's eighth appearance in the Quigley Poll since 1997, when he placed fourth.
The Quigley Poll, conducted each year since 1932, is an annual survey of motion picture theatre owners and film buyers, which asks them to vote for the ten stars that they believe generated the most box-office revenue for their theatres during the year.
There were four newcomers to the poll this year: Robert Downey, Jr., Christian Bale, Shia LaBeouf and Daniel Craig. Robert Downey, Jr., who starred in "Iron Man" and "Tropic Thunder," finished second in the voting followed by Christian Bale in third ("The Dark Knight") and Shia LaBeouf, who was one of the "Stars of Tomorrow" last year, was fourth. ("Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "New York, I Love You" and "Eagle Eye").
Harrison Ford ("Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull") was fifth and Adam Sandler ("You Don't Mess with the Zohan" and "Bedtime Stories") was sixth. The rest of the Top Ten in order were: Reese Witherspoon #7 ("Four Christmases"), George Clooney #8 ("Leatherheads" and "Burn After Reading,"), Angelina Jolie #9 ("Kung Fu Panda" - voice, "Changeling" and "Wanted") and Daniel Craig ("Quantum of Solace" and
"Defiance") was tenth. Ford has placed in the poll 13 times with one win and Clooney has been in the poll six times to date.
BLAIR UNDERWOOD'S 'DIRTY SEXY' IS DONE: Actor tells die-hard fans it's pretty much a wrap.
*Despite an online campaign by fans of the ABC drama "Dirty Sexy Money" to keep the show alive, co-star Blair Underwood tells E! Online that the drama has been taken off of life support.
"As far as I'm concerned, we're not doing any more shows," says the actor, who played Simon Elder on the series. "ABC officially doesn't want to use the C-word—canceled—but we're not on the schedule. I would pretty much say we're canceled."
HBO's "In Treatment" is another series Underwood won't be returning to, either. His character, a Navy fighter pilot traumatized by a disastrous bombing he led in Iraq, died near the end of the first season earlier this year – but not before his work earned a Golden Globe nod. He's still debating if he'll put together an acceptance speech beforehand.
"My dad told me I should have something prepared just in case," Underwood says. "He would always get ticked off every time he'd watch an awards show and somebody said, 'I didn't expect that.' And he'd say, 'What do you mean? You were nominated! How could you have not expected that? If there's a possibility, be prepared!' "
Underwood is also a Best Spoken Word Album Grammy nominee alongside Beau Bridges for their work on Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." Oddly enough, Underwood has yet to hear the album. He says with a laugh, "Now that I got the nomination, maybe they'll send me a copy."
LIFETIME BOOKS KIMBERLA LAWSON ROBY: Author sells network rights to recent novel 'One in a Million.'
*Author Kimberla Lawson Roby has sold the rights to her 2008 novella “One in a Million” to Lifetime Television Networks, an accomplishment she has been hoping for since beginning her career 11 novels ago.
“I was a little shocked,” Roby told Illinois' Rock River Valley Web site go.rrstar.com. “After you’ve written ‘x’ number of books, you don’t look for it (to happen). I’m also excited because both the Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network channels are my two absolute favorites to watch.”
"One in a Million" follows a woman whose seemingly perfect life is suddenly upended the very day she wins the lottery. About 100,000 copies of the hardcover are in print, and the paperback edition will be released in May.
Roby is keeping mum on the deal's price tag, but said she will receive an “option amount” when the paperwork is completed and the rest if a movie is made.
The writer is best known for her series of books featuring the philandering minister Curtis Black. Her 12th book, “The Best of Everything,” is about Rev. Black’s college-graduate daughter who has a serious shopping addiction that causes big marital problems. It will be released on Jan. 13.
SOULJA BOY ROBBED AT GUNPOINT?: Rapper's rep claims masked men invaded the house; video of men claiming responsibility surfaces.
*Hip hop fans and media outlets alike are skeptical about reports of Soulja Boy being ambushed by masked gunmen, who later released an Internet video claiming responsibility. But a rep for the artist says it's true.
The unconfirmed reports hit the Web on New Year’s Eve. Supposedly, the rapper and several of his friends were attacked in his Georgia home by six gunmen who stormed the house on Dec. 30.
The following day, a video surfaced of two masked men claiming responsibility for the crime. In the clip, the men are dressed in all black, with black cloth covering their entire faces. The speaker, whose voice is disguised electronically (chopped & screwed style), boasts of following the rapper home from his album release party to carry out the robbery.
In the n-word-drenched clip, the men also appeared offended by initial reports of six assailants armed with pistols and Ak-47s committing the crime. Instead, the alleged robbers claimed it was just the two of them, with one weapon.
Soulja Boy's camp has confirmed with AllHipHop.com that an incident did take place, but the rep refused to provide any concrete details, stating only that the crime is “a serious situation.”
The rapper's sophomore album, "iSouljaBoyTellem," was released on Dec. 16.
BEYONCE VIDEOS DOMINATE YOUTUBE: Singer's music clips viewed more times than Jonas Bros, Rihanna and Chris Brown.
*More people are hitting up YouTube to watch Beyonce videos than any other artist, including MTV staples Soulja Boy, Rihanna, the Jonas Brothers and Chris Brown, according to the Associated Press.
Her clip for "If I Were a Boy," where Beyonce imagines life if gender roles were reversed between her and her boyfriend, has been watched by more than 34 million on the video-sharing site.
Her other recent song, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" – featuring Beyonce dancing in a black leotard and heels – has drawn at least 22 million views and inspired dozens of copycats – including a popular toddler named Arianna.
Beyonce has spoken about how bowled over she is by all the imitations and met some of the dancers. She also joined the "Saturday Night Live" parody of the video with Justin Timberlake and cast members Andy Samberg and Bobby Moynihan. (That video has also been watched by millions online.)
The singer and her record label, Sony/BMG, are hoping her latest video, "Diva," has similar success. Released on Dec. 24, it returns Beyonce to the simple style of her and two dancers in a plain setting — this time an empty warehouse. It has drawn less than one million viewers on YouTube so far.
MILITARY POLL FINDS TROOPS SPLIT ON OBAMA: More than half of active-duty service members are 'uncertain or pessimistic.'
*A new survey taken by the Military Times has found that six out of 10 active-duty service members say they are uncertain or pessimistic about President-elect Obama as their commander in chief.
Uncertainty from the men and women in uniform is centered on Obama's lack of military experience and their perceived difference in his mission and values from that of Bush. There was also concern expressed over Obama's timetable for pulling troops out of Iraq, his ability to lead Americans fighting in Afghanistan and his calls to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Army Times reported.
"Being that the Marine Corps can be sent anywhere in the world with the snap of his fingers, nobody has confidence in this guy as commander in chief," a lance corporal who asked not to be identified responded to the Times survey.
A higher percentage of respondents responded that Bush had their best interests at heart more so than Obama.
The findings are results of the sixth annual Military Times survey of subscribers to Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times newspapers. Conducted Dec. 1 through Dec. 8, the survey had more than 1,900 active-duty respondents.
Nearly half of the respondents described their political views as conservative or very conservative, the Army Times reported.
ITTY BITTY BITS: Globes tap Rock; Denzel's swim race; T.I. glitch in Miami; more black/white twins; Diddy's Jan. 20 tix; Travis & Katy split; Rucker's 'Browns.'
*Chris Rock has been added to the list of presenters at "The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards," to be telecast live on NBC Sunday, January 11 (8 - 11 p.m. EST) at The Beverly Hilton. Cameron Diaz and Jessica Lange were also recently added, joining previously announced presenters Simon Baker, Drew Barrymore, Glenn Close, Sacha Baron Cohen, Aaron Eckhart, Laurence Fishburne, Ricky Gervais, Jake Gyllenhaal, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Poehler and Seth Rogen.
*Denzel Washington celebrated his 54th birthday on Dec. 28 in the Turks and Caicos, says the New York Post. "During a boat ride to the island where his party was held he jumped overboard and challenged his son to a swimming race," according to a source. Washington lost the competition, but won over guests like Star Jones and Turks and Caicos Premier Michael Misick at his 25-person party, where everyone enjoyed Dom Pérignon and platters of lobster.
*T.I. fans experienced a seating snafu at a New Year's Eve gig in Miami. According to the New York Post, the jail-bound rapper was supposed to perform poolside at the Gansevoort Hotel, where promoters sold tables for $10,000, but when partiers got there expecting to see the concert, they were told T.I. would be performing inside the hotel's small ballroom instead. "The city wouldn't allow him to perform outside," a Gansevoort rep said.
*A mixed-race couple in the UK has had another set of black and white twins, reports The Sun. [View photos here:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2082429.ece] Dean Durrant, who is black, and his wife, Alison Spooner, who is white, welcomed twin girls in November, one of them dark-skinned, the other very fair. It was a miraculous repeat of 2001, when the couple had their first children, also twin girls, and also of opposite skin tones.
*Diddy's camp is clearing up rumors that he has been begging for four inauguration tickets for the past several weeks. "The story is ridiculous and untrue," his rep tells TMZ.com. "Diddy was offered tickets by the Obama inaugural committee because of his work on the campaign trail with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Kevin Liles. He never asked for tickets and he was never asked to pay for them." Diddy added: "I am very grateful to be a part of this moment in history. I'll see ya'll at the inauguration."
*It's over for Travis McCoy and Katy Perry. McCoy, the 27-year-old frontman for Gym Class Heroes, had vacationed with the 24-year-old "I Kissed a Girl" singer in Mexico over the holidays, and McCoy had even bought her a "promise ring" in June.
But People.com is reporting that the singers ended their relationship shortly before the New Year. McCoy took to his FriendsOrEnemies.com blog on Dec. 31, where he posted lyrics to hip-hop group Main Source's breakup song "Looking at the Front Door."
*Lamman Rucker will star in the TV version of Tyler Perry's "Meet the Browns" series, premiering Wednesday (Jan 5) on TBS. Rucker plays Leroy Brown’s nephew Will Brown, a gynecologist in his early 30s who is married with two kids. He provides free medical services to the residents of Mr.
Brown's home he’s transformed into a small quaint geriatric dwelling filled with quirky characters. Meanwhile, a lively fraternity house bustles with collegiate activity next door. "Meet The Browns" also stars David Mann as Mr. Brown, Tamala Mann and Denise Boutte.
NEW WEB SITE TRACKS MIDDLE PASSAGE ROUTES: Blacks can now trace slave ships that carried ancestors from Africa.
*A newly-launched free Internet database gives African-Americans the opportunity for the first time to explore their African heritage the way whites have long been able to chart their migration from Europe.
Voyages: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database (http://www.slavevoyages.org/tast/index.faces) is the result of 40 years of research by hundreds of scholars. It allows African-Americans to trace the routes of slave ships that transported 12.5 million of their ancestors from Africa as early as the 16th Century.
Two years ago, Emory University researchers, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, began compiling maps, images and other records of about 35,000 slave-trade voyages from Africa to North America, Brazil, the Caribbean and Europe, according to the Chicago Tribune. It is the first time such a large amount of data on the subject has been available to the public.
"Everybody wants to know where they came from, and for people from Europe, it has been possible for several centuries now to trace migrant communities," said David Eltis, a history professor at Emory and a director of the project. "Now it is possible to do the same for people of African descent."
"The records for people of Africa and the Americas are better than the records of connections between Europe and the Americas for the simple reason that slaves were property," he said. "No one cared what happened to free migrants. They did care what happened to slaves, because they were making money from them."
While the database can establish the regions slave ships launched from in Africa and where they arrived in the United States, it generally is impossible to determine which ancestors were on board, researchers said, because the records have African names that were changed when the slaves arrived in North America.
"The data certainly is not going to be helpful in tracing individual ancestors. You can't say your ancestor came on this vessel, except in a tiny handful of cases," Eltis said. "What it can do is provide context. The big advantage is that it establishes connections between parts of Africa and parts of the Americas."
Since 2003, a Washington, D.C., company called African Ancestry Inc. has offered mail-order DNA tests for $349. In recent years, other DNA research projects have been developed, attracting such celebrity clients as Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee and civil rights icon Andrew Young.
The problem with DNA testing, according to researchers, is that insufficient samples of DNA have been collected from Africa, making it difficult to provide matches from many parts of the continent. The Voyages database will help reinforce DNA data, researchers said.
"People may not be able to trace their particular ancestor, but it is the most complete accounting of individual lives, individual ships, individual journeys to date," said Leslie Harris, an Emory genealogist and author of "In the Shadow of Slavery: African Americans in New York City, 1626-1863."
The database, which is expected to become a classroom tool, contains the records of 10.5 million slaves, more than 85 percent of the slave trade. It identifies more than 67,000 of them by their African name, age, sex, origin and place of embarkation.
Though many Americans view slavery as a U.S. phenomenon, the United States represented only 4 percent of the slave trade, far behind Brazil, the leader, which imported about 45 percent of the slaves, Eltis said.

Spoof Lampooning Michael Moore Moves to DVD
DVD Review by Kam Williams
*This shameful spoof takes cheap potshots at Michael Moore ostensibly for the amusement of right-wing zealots.
The film features Kevin Farley as Hollywood moviemaker Michael Malone, a thinly-veiled caricature of Mr. Moore.
The plot is very loosely based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, except that this Scrooge (aka Michael) hates the Fourth of July holiday instead of Christmas.
The simplistic premise has him not merely being un-American but the unwitting dupe of a cell of radical Islamists planning to blow up Madison Square Garden.
Narrated by Leslie Nielsen, the story unfolds in post 9/11 Afghanistan where we find Michael naively accepting $10 million in financing for his next project, "Fascist America," from a trio of Taliban terrorists. Fortunately, he is visited by three ghosts, that of General George Patton (Kelsey Grammer), President John F. Kennedy (Chriss Anglin) and country singer Trace Adkins (himself), who take turns trying to show the Prodigal citizen the light in time to avert the impending disaster.
While the film's first few might be deceptively palatable, it doesn't take long for the humor to be subsumed by a heavy-handed political message. Director David Zucker resorts to his trademark slapstick, silly skits and sight gags to poke fun unfairly at not merely Moore but a host of liberal causes, including global warming, nationalized healthcare and gay rights.
Along the way, ACLU attorneys are depicted as zombies who deserve to be shot on sight, student demonstrators are demonized for exercising their First Amendment rights, and Moore is repeatedly portrayed as a traitor. Less a legit satire than a scary soap box in service of a mean-spirited agenda. A dead giveaway is the cast which boasts a bevy of arch conservatives including Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.
Challenging authority as unpatriotic? Bah, humbug!
Poor (0 stars)
PG-13 for profanity, drug use, irreverent humor and crude content.

EUR FILM REVIEW: Slumdog Millionaire
Dev Patel Delivers as Lovesick Game Show Contestant
Film Review by Kam Williams
*Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) was just one correct answer away from winning the grand prize of 20 million rupees on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" when the police decided to question him about his extraordinary string of luck.
After all, no one ever lasted this long on the television game show before, and the producers doubted that this dirt-poor, uneducated orphan from the teeming slums of Mumbai could have achieved his unlikely feat without cheating.
Therefore, the night before his return for his final appearance on the program, they arrange for the authorities to drag the innocent 18 year-old down to the station for a little Abu Ghraib-level interrogation away from the public eye.
But despite being tortured by a couple of sadistic cops (Irfan Khan and Saurabh Shukla), Jamal matter-of-factly explains exactly how he came to acquire the answers to such seemingly obscure trivia questions. And soon, what gradually becomes apparent is that everything is on the up-and-up.
For all the unfortunate lad has to share is his sorrowful autobiography, an endless tale of woe which he reveals via a kaleidoscope of colorful flashbacks. Surprisingly, it turns out that he's actually been less concerned with taking home the 20 million rupees than with using his TV publicity as a means of finding his long-lost love, Latika (Freida Pinto), a fellow street urchin and fan of the popular quiz show.
This is the engaging premise of Slumdog Millionaire, a genre-defying romantic thriller from Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan. The clever co-directors deftly interweave three non-simultaneous strands of Jamal's life story into an absorbing triskelion that definitely deserves to be recognized come Oscar time.
One aspect revolves around his climb to the top on Millionaire as he engages in both superficial banter and psychological warfare with the show's slimy, if unctuous, emcee (Anil Kapoor). That relatively-light badinage stands in sharp contrast with his being mercilessly roughed up by the police who resort to water boarding and electric shocks in quest of a confession. The third part of the picture is devoted to Jamal's surviving by his wits during his challenging childhood with the help of Latika and his ne'er-do-well older brother, Salim (Madhur Mittal).
Will Jamal die behind bars while being interrogated or will he be allowed his honestly-earned shot at that final question? If back on the air, will he give the right answer and win the loot, will he reunite with his sweetheart, or achieve both goals?
A dizzying, delightful spectacle situated on the Subcontinent well worth the investment for the kaleidoscope of colors splashed across the screen alone. Plus there's a spellbinding performance on the part of the protagonist Patel, and enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end of this explosive adventure.
Excellent (4 stars)
Rated R for violence, profanity and disturbing images.
In English and Hindi with subtitles.
