*Author Kimberla Lawson Roby’s 12th novel will hit the shelves this week. The new book, “The Best of Everything,” introduces a new protagonist, but connects to an old – very popular – character.
The book, hitting bookshelves Tuesday, establishes the story of Alicia Black Sullivan, the beautiful and spoiled 22-year-old daughter of Roby’s infamous Rev. Curtis Black – the main character of five previous tomes.
“His daughter, she fits that cliché that the apple does not fall far from the tree,’ Roby described. “So when you meet Alisha you know without a doubt that she is certainly Rev. Black’s daughter.”
Roby told EUR’s Lee Bailey that she’d made plans to fade out Rev. Black and start a new journey with another personality, though the good Reverend has been a favorite of her literary fans.
“That has been my plan for a little while now,” she said. “The last book about him, called ‘Sin No More,’ came out about one year ago. It was the fifth in the series. So I felt it was time to move on to something else. He went from good to bad and then bad to good and sort of turned his life around and is this wonderful person and a true man of God and I kind of want to leave him that way.”

Meanwhile, Alicia marries Rev. Black’s new Assistant Pastor, Phillip. Roby storied that the two characters fall in love and life is great ... for a little while.
“It is when Phillip realizes that Alicia has a major shopping problem; I guess you can call it a shopping addiction, and spends way more money than they could possibly ever afford and so much more than his annual income. And that’s where all the problems begin and all the arguments and that’s when Alicia starts the sneaking around and all the lying. She starts to resent Phillip because he does not earn the hundreds of thousands of dollars that her father earned throughout the years.”
The author said that the inspiration of the novel came from witnessing the overextended finances of friends around the country.
“The story really came from the idea of what goes on with so many men and women in America, but for women especially who, for whatever reason, need to carry the Gucci; they need to carry that Louis Vutton bag; and they need to buy the Prada even though they know for a fact that they cannot afford it; People who spend way beyond their means and decide that they’ll let the electric bill go and pay it next month,” she said. “I think that it’s a big problem. Our country is dealing with such major debt and people are maxing out credit cards all the time. Even with the way the economy is now and how terrible of a state the economy is in, some people still have not learned their lesson.”
“It’s very timely,” she said of story’s message, “and it’s something that we really need to talk about and hopefully get people to pay a lot better attention to what they’re doing with their finances.”
Roby promised that the book is not “preachy,” but does teach readers a few things simply by creating relatable scenarios and consequences.
“My hope is that readers will look at Alicia and they will look at Phillip – a man who really has his head on straight. He’s telling her what she needs to do. The lesson will come from that. Alicia, on the other hand, ends up practically ruining her life in general and gets into the type of trouble that you wouldn’t want anyone to have to deal with.”
“I want readers to see what the consequences are if they don’t start living on a budget, and they don’t start being a lot more responsible with the money that they’re earning, and they don’t start paying attention to the bills that they have to pay,” she continued.
With a new cast of characters, Roby doesn’t completely leave Rev. Curtis Black out of the picture.
“You see Curtis throughout the book quite a bit, but through the eyes of Alicia and Phillip. He doesn’t have his own voice, but you certainly see him quite a bit,” she said.
