On January 19, 2001, Approximately 100 members and supporters of the Detroit Hip-Hop Coalition, a collective that represents over 4000 metro Detroit Hip-Hop artists/groups, DJ's, retailers and Dancers staged a boisterous, but Peaceful Protest outside of WJLB FM 98. This Protest/Boycott stems from "Community outrage" over the top-rated station's adamant refusal to give
airplay to top independent area artists.
Spearheaded by the Detroit Hip-Hop Coalition, a multicultural organization designed to unify the Detroit Hip-Hop Community, the protest was bolstered by Local, National, and even International support. Hip-Hop Artist/Activist and RapStation.com owner Chuck D, of Public Enemy contacted and met with members of the Coalition discussing various strategies on the eve of the protest.
Tensions flared between the Community and the "Corporation" as Protesters marched and chanted while distributing literature. WJLB's phone lines were jammed with Protest supporters, prompting WJLB operators to cease answering.
WJLB which bills itself as "the voice and conscience of the community" (but is actually controlled by mega-conglomerate ClearChannel Communications) refused to meet with DHHC representatives and ordered the delegation out of the building after efforts were made to intimidate them.
DHHC delegation member Brandon Wilkins had this to say after being "escorted" out of the building. "It's a shame that a station that calls itself the voice of the community treats members of the community in this fashion. There was no reason to surround us with security and not allow us to present our grievances. It's unfortunate, however it only strengthens our resolve."
The DHHC has declared each Friday "BLACK-OUT FRIDAYS" and requests all members and supporters to turn off the station on Fridays and also to call their telephone lines (313) 965-2000 and (313) 298-7908 and request area artists.
Added Coalition member Lee Martin, "The same 10-12 songs, All Day Long, has got to Stop. This station takes us for granted. Detroit made it #1, Detroit can just as easily make it #101."
