DENZEL: The ladies man is running 'Out of Time.' The ladies are skipping happy hour after work today to live vicariously through Sanaa Lathan as her and Mr. Washington heat up the screen in his latest thriller “Out Of Time.” We featured Lathan Monday, and since that time we’ve gotten more info on the film. It seems that Sanaa held out on the details more than we thought. Ms. Lathan may be a bit scandalous in this film while Denzel is being a sucker for her love. But, not only does he have Sanaa in the film, he also has the lovely Eva Mendes who was also with him in “Training Day.” During the Lathan feature, we mentioned that Denzel would handle the age issue of his co-stars and himself later in the week. There’s been some criticism of Denzel starring opposite Sanaa and Eva because of that obvious age difference. The movie is set in a steamy tropical town called Banyan Key, Fla., just down the road from Miami and everything in this movie gets hot. Sanaa plays Anne Merai Harrison, Denzel’s married high school sweetheart who is in a troubled marriage and having an affair with Denzel. Eva plays Alex Diaz-Whitlock, Denzel’s estranged wife, who has risen to the rank of detective on the police force. She is assigned to investigate a double homicide with Denzel, who plays Matt Lee Whitlock, in the sleepy town of Banyan Key, where he is the beloved chief of police. Denzel let us know that Sanaa was a professional and jumped right in with her main man. “We screen tested 4 women. The screen test was when you first see me come to her house and that was the only sexy scene we did,” said Denzel. “So the ice was broken.” Denzel also mentioned that he isn’t making the same mistakes he’s made in the past with his wife Pauletta. He now forewarns his wife of the sultry scenes that he must struggle through (wink wink). He’s learned from past experience. “In ‘Mississippi Masala,’ I made the mistake of not showing [my wife] the film and we went to the premiere,” explained Denzel. “It wasn’t a good day.” If nothing else about that movie jogs your memory, certainly the erotic hotel room scene will ring a bell. “I guess she feels she should know before Joe Blow or whoever is snickering,” said Denzel. “This movie ['Out of Time'] she saw months back in January or so.” In case you’re wondering, the ages of these celebs are: Sanaa Lathan, 32; Denzel Washington, 48; and Eva Mendes, 29. Denzel explains that age should not be a barrier for him or anyone else in Hollywood. “If I was 71, that would be a little strange,” laughed Denzel. “I did some interviews the other day and this one lady kept harping on it saying, ‘I don’t think it’s right. I don’t think it’s right,’ explained Washington. “I’m playing in a movie, ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’ and Meryl Streep plays Liev Schreiber’s mom and I know she’s not old enough to be his mom, so should she not get the part? Should it be someone who is old enough? It’s funny how it’s convenient when it needs to be.” Some people wanted to know if Denzel had anything to do with the choosing of his young, sexy co-stars. “I had nothing to do with that decision other than signing off once the decision was made,” said Denzel. “Carl [Franklin - the director] called me and said, ‘You know, I got the girl and I think she’s great. I just wanna run it by you and see what you think.’ I said, ‘Who?’ And he said, ‘Eva Mendes.’ And I said, ‘Oh! She is great.’" Denzel is more of a mentor for his co-stars than anything else. He is trying to make a difference for those coming along after him. “I just like to see people do well. I like to see Derek Luke ('Antwone Fisher') walking around here a year later in suits more expensive than mine,” he said. “And seeing Sanaa, and Eva and Dean Cain do well, that makes me happy.” It seems Denzel isn’t worrying about the age thing. His audience isn’t shrinking and his looks definitely are not fading. The reviews have been generally pretty good for his newest thriller, so the only thing left to do is to run to the theatre before you run ... out of time. --- J.C. Brooks Editor's Note: Speaking of reviews, EUR/EURweb's new column, The Screening Room, gives "Out of Time" four out a possible five stars. Here's Cherie Saunders review: The new Carl Franklin film “Out of Time” [****] is mandatory viewing. It’s Denzel Washington as Police Chief Matt Whitlock, Sanaa Lathan as the married woman he’s seeing, Dean Cain as Sanaa’s abusive husband and Eva Mendez as Denzel’s separated wife on the verge of a divorce-slash-Federal agent called in to oversee Whitlock’s investigation into a double -murder. They all dance on a hotbed of sex, murder, false accusations, oppressive heat, and did I mention sex? Chief Whitlock is more like Chief Suspect in the double murder and must work at a furious pace to hide his secret sexual involvement with one of the victims while trying to find the real killer. EUR Newsbits WILL SMITH SAYS NO DISCRIMINATION Actor believes Hollywood is fair. *Uh oh! Will Smith has possibly hit a speed bump in his career with his latest remarks. He appeared in the UK Wednesday, to promote "Bad Boys II" and somehow he got on the subject of Hollywood's wholesome and fair selection policy. "The execs don't care about what color you are. They care about how much money you make," said Smith. "The real key is that the more black actors are successful at the box office, the more opportunities that is going to open up." It seems that he also believes if a person is determined, they will succeed at anything, no matter the color of their skin. "I said if I wanted to be president, I know that I could. But I think I can say unequivocally that I do not want to be president of the United States." But he didn't stop there. He went on to endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger for the governor of California. "Coming to America with nothing, to become the biggest movie star in the world and then to decide to run for governor, he is the perfect candidate." REV RUN FOR PRESIDENT Meet Phat Farm's newest executive *It must be nice to have a brother in high places, but it seems that Rev Run has skills beyond the microphone. Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons has been named President of Phat Farm Athletics after heading up Phat Farm Footwear, a division of Phat Farm owned by his brother, Russell. The division raked in more than $170 million in sales of athletic gear in nine months under Run's guidance. "I go to the office everyday and I never thought that I was the office type," Run told AllHipHop.com. "When I got there, Russell had a sneaker company that had about 10 sneakers out that weren't doing anything. When I arrived, Jesus put the sneakers on and the company is now worth a hundred million dollars in under 9 months." In addition to the Phat Classic, The Replay and the Rev-1 sneaker lines, Simmons said that a new sneaker will be introduced shortly, the Run-Tek. ---------- advert ---------- Ladies, visit www.cocoacure.com. The MC planned to drop his next album in February of 2004, but now has settled with June 2004. He says he doesn't want to compete with his crew in record stores. "I was gonna release it in the first quarter, but [the record company] asked me to give [G-Unit's Beg for Mercy] room, you know," 50 explained to MTV at the Mixshow Power Summit in Puerto Rico last week. "The material for [the G-Unit] record came out so well, they feel like it's gonna [have a long shelf life]." G-Unit's Young Buck believes that it will outsell 50's "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," which moved close to 900,000 copies in its first week of sales. "A million and a half," Buck predicted without flinching. "I believe anything is possible. You know, with the controversy around the album, I think once the people get a hold of it and they get to listening and seeing the things on this album, that's gonna make you say, 'Hold up, I know they didn't just say that.' It's gonna draw a whole lot more people." RECORD SALES ARE DOWN And not just in America *The music industry is taking a punishing blow from dismal record sales over the last six months. On Wednesday, global data showed music sales tumbled almost 11 percent. Despite major hits from Ms. Dirty herself, Christina Aguilera, and rapper 50 Cent, Internet downloading and CD-burning continues to impact the industry. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) indicate that the rest of the year may not be as bleak with strong releases scheduled to peak CD sales between seven and eight percent. Shares in EMI Group, the world's third biggest music company, climbed 3.6 percent in London as investors believe in the prospect of better business in the second half and no warnings issued ahead of results for November. The latest intelligence from the IFPI is likely to spark negotiations between top music companies though, as they scramble to cut costs after three years of decline. The proposed Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame and museum, backed by Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, would probably serve both retail and residential needs. An African American museum purchased by Gamble several years ago would also likely be part of the facility. Though an exact location hasn't been selected for the museum, Gamble has identified potential sites just south Philly's downtown area. Gamble said the museum would provide a history of Rhythm and Blues and also chronicle the city's important contributions to the music. "Philadelphia has a great music history, and we should be able to exploit it," Gamble said. MAGIC JOHNSON WILL GIVE YOU A LOAN Basketball marvel turned business mogul opens new loan center *Former Los Angeles Laker superstar turned business mogul Magic Johnson, united with Washington Mutual Bank Wednesday to open a new home loan center in Harlem. The home loan center is a part of his nationwide effort to help residents in low- to medium-income neighborhoods buy homes. "Together, I know that we will bring new opportunity and positive change to our communities," said Kerry Killinger, Washington Mutual's chairman. The Harlem center is the first of its kind. The bank and Johnson Development Corp. have inked a five-year partnership between them that seeks to further economic development in minority communities. The centers are designed to increase accessibility to affordable lending programs and will be staffed by local residents. Similar openings are to follow in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington. A total of 15 home loan centers are planned for the first year of the partnership. "Our mutual passion for educating people about how they can get a mortgage for a new home will make this partnership successful," Johnson said. //////// Tired of AT&T, SPRINT & MCI's Hiiiigh Ass Rates? ////////// SAVE YOUR MONEY. Well, artist, Eric Brown, has taken it upon himself to provide intelligence though his art about what is going on in his backyard as well as the world and protest. The exhibit, "Homeland Security ... An American Profile" opened Wednesday and runs through Nov. 7. The paintings depict strong images of silhouettes against brick walls with arms raised and fists curled or clenched, all being dominated by the red, white and blue colors of the US flag. Brown, 30, gave his works titles such as "Homeland Security," "Empty Streets," and "Day of Absence." He said in an interview at his "SleepWalker's Art" gallery that his goal is to convey the fear that under the Patriot Act "anyone can be rounded up, it's not just black people or Muslims, it's just Americans." He explained his other piece titled "Empty Streets," saying that he "wanted to pose the question: what happened to the people? Was it fear from gangs? Was it everyone rounded up and put in a camp like he Afghans in Cuba?" He was referring to the US-run Guantanamo Bay military camp where suspected former ruling Taliban in Afghanistan are held with members of al Qaeda. Brown said he also wanted his exhibit to reveal the torment of drug trafficking and inner-city gangs like the Bloods and Crips on urban black communities across the United States. "I feel African-Americans are placed in a position of subservience where we have our hands up in the air, be it out of frustration, being pulled over by police or getting robbed," Brown said. Share it with us (info@eurweb.com) ================= OTHER NEWS: LIMBAUGH UNDER INVESTIGATION Commentator who made racial comment under more fire. After resigning from his position with ESPN, because of the backlash over his racial comments about NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb, Rush Limbaugh has run into yet another snag. The imprudently garrulous conservative who has had a successful run on the radio with the "Rush Limbaugh Show," is being investigated for illegally buying prescription drugs as confirmed by authorities. Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates Limbaugh's politically focused show to more than 650 markets, issued a statement from Limbaugh on Thursday saying, "I am unaware of any investigation by any authority involving me. No government representative has contacted me directly or indirectly. If my assistance is required, I will, of course, cooperate fully." In a two week period of time he has been forced to think about his own mortality and the state of conditions for young black males in urban America. He has difficulty expressing his grief, frustration, fear and anger. Guys are socialized to keep their emotional walls up (i.e. be tough, don't be a punk, "get over it" ). If young men are not in church yet, where do they go to grieve? There is no male version of Oprah on TV. They stop dreaming and preparing for a future because they feel endangered. There's a tendency to only focus on instant self-gratification. The videos they watch only focus on sex, violence and materialism. Until they learn to end the violence, self-hatred and the bravado behavior, more will die a senseless death. As long as the role models of being a pimp, a gangsta or a player are glorified, the madness will continue. So this message is a call out to the parents, teachers, pastors, politicians, CEOs, PhDs, 100 Black Men, grandfathers, rites of passage elders, entrepreneurs, musicans, frat brothers, doctors, mechanics, ...any righteous black man to follow the African proverb of "each one..teach one." It takes a man to teach a boy how to become a man. -- by Jewel Diamond Taylor, Motivational Speaker and Author Save the date to attend the "Don't Give Up Conference" featuring FOX TV Court Judge Mablean Ephriam, Motivational Speaker Jewel Diamond Taylor, Artist/Author Synthia Saint James and author Victor McGlothin, October 25, 2003 in San Diego for tickets - e-mail info@DoNotGiveUp.net visit web site http://www.DoNotGiveUp.net FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE -- THE EURweb PICTURE PAGE! If a CD sells for $18 and has 15 songs on it, make it available for download at $1.20 per song. That way the record company will get the full price for the CD if a person likes the whole album. If a person only likes 5 or 6 songs, at least the record company will get something instead of the nothing they currently get because people don't want to pay $18 dollars for only 5 songs. Then the companies will start to see that in most cases albums are loaded with filler and should only contain seven or eight good songs. Sell those albums for a lower price and people won't feel cheated nor have 'justification' for downloading for free." //////// Tired of AT&T, SPRINT & MCI's Hiiiigh Ass Rates? ////////// SAVE YOUR MONEY.
