DAWN ROBINSON: THE PHOENIX She continues to rise and return to music. by -- J.C. Brooks Dawn Robinson is back on the scene and she’s hungry. After numerous projects, the beautiful one-fourth of the 90’s super group, En Vogue, made her face and voice well known before the infamous split-up. The split with En Vogue as well as Lucy Pearl left a negative spin on her name. She appeared to be the “black sheep” of both groups that had an attitude problem. She’s grown from both experiences and contends that she knows what she wants and is willing to wait for it. She just wants to get paid like everyone else that gets up and goes to work every day. Until then, an En Vogue reunion is in the back of her mind. “The reason why we haven’t been closer is because the business hadn’t been set up right. Now I have my own label and it’s totally different. I don’t mind doing a reunion as long as I benefit this time because that was the whole thing. I wanted all the girls to benefit from the fruits of our labor and we weren’t. The talks, according to her singer/songwriter husband Andre Allen, seem to be pulling them closer together than they’ve been in a very long time. Dawn goes on to explain. “We had met last year…the four of us just the original members met at my place … Cindy and Terry had a deal with Denzil and Tommy still, and Maxine and I didn’t want to be a part of something that was already established, so we just said you guys go ahead and do your thing,” explained Robinson. “Actually they had 22 or 24 songs that had already been recorded without us, so we felt like we’re just coming in on the back end kinda singing background for you guys and we really don’t feel comfortable so let’s start again when it’s time for everybody to come back together.” Since Maxine and Dawn exited the group, it has gone through a few changes. One being the addition of a new member, Rona Bennett. And since Dawn had been replaced and the tracks had been laid, she figured it be best for all considered that they promote that effort first. “It would’ve been awkward for her too because they already had her involved, so to kick her out or it’s like what we have five members now? It would’ve been weird so you guys go ahead and do your thing and next year we’ll talk again. So this year we’re talking and my husband’s coaxing. I was reluctant because I still haven’t done my solo album.” Hubby intervenes saying that he isn’t really coaxing, but this is the closest they’ve ever been to a reunion. He also said in going through talks with En Vogue, she may be opening herself up to a Lucy Pearl reunion. “I saw Rafael last night and I was the one who actually offered. I said you know I’ve always given him his props because he is one of the best musicians I’ve ever worked with on guitar and on bass. And he has one of the most incredible voices in R&B,” Robinson said. “I’ve always been in love with Rafael’s sound, whether we had our differences or not had nothing to do with it. It was different.” But once again the financial issues became a concern and Lucy Pearl moved on in another direction without Dawn. Nonetheless, it was another experience that she found invaluable. “The credibility I got by being in Lucy Pearl was totally different from the credibility in En Vogue. In En Vogue, I was just one of the girls, pretty face, whatever and that’s all we were pretty much because we didn’t control our own destiny,” she said. “We didn’t write our own songs. We didn’t create our sound, we didn’t create our look of the group. We didn’t create the name. Lucy Pearl was created by all three of us coming together saying, ‘What do you think about that name I don’t like it, I like that.’ We came together. They gotta get the business right. And that’s where again it was just set up wrong from the beginning. And after I left, Ali felt the same way. I still wanted to do that because I felt like it was just undeniably it would’ve been a hit. I just knew when Rafael came to me and said we got this group idea, Ali’s coming from this group, I’m coming from the Toni’s and you’re coming from En Vogue to make this super group ... How can you lose? I had to do that. Unfortunately, the business wasn’t right. That's our girl Dawn. If the money's funny, as far as she's concerned, she'll take a pass on ya. Now, as we mentioned above, Dawn is now married to fellow musician Andre Allen, and together, along with other members, make up the Dre Allen Project. We'll tell you more about that next week. The info as well as a host of other things happening to Jackson, aren’t helping him right now. Jackson has responded to the leaked information concerning his 1993 case settlement in hopes of shedding light on what appears to be an attempt to discredit him. Jackson said in a statement: “I respect the obligation of confidentiality imposed on all of the parties to the 1993 proceedings. Yet, someone has chosen to violate the confidentiality of those proceedings. Whoever is now leaking this material is showing as much disrespect for the Santa Maria Court’s ‘gag order’ as they are a determination to attack me. “No action or investigation has been taken to determine who is leaking this information or why they are permitted to violate the law in such a manner. I respectfully request that people see these efforts for what they are. “These kinds of attacks and leaks seek to try the case in the press, rather than to a jury who will hear all of the evidence that will show that I did not, and would not, ever, harm a child. I have always maintained my innocence, and vehemently denied that these events ever took place. I reluctantly chose to settle the false claims only to end the terrible publicity and to continue with my life and career. “I ask all of my neighbors in Santa Maria, the people whom I give my loyal trust and admiration, to keep an open mind, and give me a chance to show that I am completely innocent of these charges. I will not let you down.” KOBE BRYANT FATE WEIGHED WITH LAKERS After Pistons loss team fate uncertain. *With all that has gone on in the Lakers' camp this year, the Pistons delivered the final blow to what has been a powerful force to reckon with for the last six years. Now all of the players are questioning their futures with the team and are looking for the best options: retirement, more money or free agent. It’s been reported that there is a strong belief that Lakers owner Jerry Buss will pull out the stops to keep Bryant on the roster. But at the same time, Bryant has legal troubles that could result in jail time. It’s believed that he will try to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. Bryant has turned down maximum value extensions for two years, according to the LA Daily News and it’s believed that Bryant will be offered the most pay the Lakers can muster under NBA rules: $140 million over seven years. This move could put Bryant in a position of power with the Lakers, allowing him to pick and choose who he wants to work with from the coach on down. The LA Daily News sources have told the publication that Buss is prepared to let go of suggested players and even Phil Jackson. The top players that already seem unprotected by the team are Rick Fox and Jamal Sampson. Karl Malone has already decided Wednesday to become a free agent and Derek Fisher isn’t that far behind. Bryant has been battling with Jackson and O'Neal for control of the team for the past five years. If he had to choose, team insiders say he would coexist with Jackson more easily than O'Neal. Phil Jackson and his staff are under contract through June 30. They met Wednesday morning and will assist with next week's draft, but Jackson refuses to speak about his future. Charles wore his trademark dark glasses and had a baby grand piano by his side. Ray Charles died last week at the age of 73. BOW WOW AND OTHERS 'ROLL AND BOUNCE' Many celebs star in roller skating film. *The “rooooooooock, skate! "Roll Bounce" has a full roster of talent including: Bow Wow, Nick Cannon, Khleo Thomas, Chi McBride, Mike Epps, Meagan Good and Rick Gonzalez. Filming is due to begin June 28 in Chicago with Malcolm Lee as director. The story follows the late 70’s when rolling skating was an every day activity if possible. The 27-year-old R&B singer posted bail and was released Tuesday, June 15, after police say an officer stopped him on an outstanding traffic in Somerville, N.J warrant and found 25 plastic bags of marijuana in his car. While awaiting his arraignment, he told his lawyer that he was the victim of police harassment, the Star-Ledger of Newark reported. "I've got to file this lawsuit today, I'm serious," Jaheim said. "I just want them to leave me alone. They really violated me this time." A Hillsborough patrolman stopped the singer after running a check on the plates of his 2004 silver Mercedes-Benz and found an outstanding warrant stemming from an unpaid ticket. Police said Jaheim Hoagland, the artist’s full name, got out of his car during the traffic stop Monday and berated the officer, who then took him into custody. The officer then searched the car after smelling burnt marijuana, police said. He also has a prior drug conviction from 1996 in Middlesex County that resulted in five years of probation, court records show. SMOKEY ROBINSON CAUGHT STEALING? Singer catches a lawsuit from chef. *Smokey Robinson is a singer and a cook it seems. It seems that his dishes will be sold in a store near you, but not under my name says a Louisiana chef. The chef, Johnny "Jambalaya" Percle, said that the slogan Robinson is using for his gumbo, “The Soul is in the Bowl, is too close to his slogan "Soul in Yo Bowl” which was trademarked by him in 1997. He says he’s been using the slogan to sell gumbo and other dishes under this name for years. The trademark infringement case against the singer was in federal court last week in White Castle, La. "If he would have called it 'Smokey Robinson's Gumbo,' he wouldn't have heard boo from Johnny Jam," said Percle, a chef at Nottoway Plantation, about 25 miles south of Baton Rouge. "I truly believe by all legal rights, 'Soul in the Bowl' is mine, not his." Robinson’s California-based SFGL Foods introduced "Smokey Robinson's Soul in the Bowl" line in January, featuring frozen Louisiana gumbo. The products are available in some Chicago grocery stores, with distribution planned for California later this month. National distribution is planned by the end of the year, according to a company Web site. Percle once catered a meal for Robinson in New Orleans. A friend told him about the similar slogan thinking that Robinson and Percle had collaborated in some way. Steve Sherman, a California lawyer for SFGL Foods, said he is aware of the lawsuit, "but I have not personally had an opportunity to review the complaint yet. It doesn't sound like something that has merit." WANNA ADVERTISE, BUT SHORT ON CHEDDAR? Your two-line ad this size will reach millions. We work with you! Contact: cynthia@eurweb.com LIONEL RICHIE BARES ALL Singer vents to Jet magazine. *Even after all this time, Lionel Richie wants the world to know that he ain’t no punk. He wants to explain what really happened when Brenda Richie, his first wife, came over his mistresses house and put the smackdown on both of them. In the new issue of Jet, Richie is candid about his life, including the fight with Brenda in 1988, how he failed Nicole and his newest divorce. Richie told the magazine “He is not a wuss. He was raised not to hit on women and that’s why he didn’t strike back at Brenda.” He opens up about the peace they’ve experienced in their relationship since. He’s on the cover of Jet with Nicole Richie his and Brenda’s adopted daughter. He says the two have managed to spend more time together and he’s able to be more a part of her life after dropping the ball early on. Her biological father is Pete Escovedo, Sheila E’s brother, but she considers Lionel to be her dad because he raised her since she was three. Nicole co-stars the Fox show “The Simple Life” with her best friend Paris Hilton. Nicole has only been drug free for two years and started abusing drugs when she was only 13 years old. Lionel says he was too busy being Lionel Richie, an absentee dad. He vows not to make the same mistake with his youngest children. His goal is to also reunite with The Commodores and write a Broadway musical. SNOOP DOGG GOES INTO THE SHOE BUSINESS Rapper make shoes with Pony. *Talk about a Dogg and Pony show. Snoop Dogg is sure to put on a real fantastic psychedelic style for his new shoes that will hopefully not include a pimp heel. The Snoop Dogg Collection by Pony is called "The One and Only." The sneakers will combine Snoop's west coast style with the classic Pony design, according to PRNewswire. The collection is due in limited and exclusive stores November 2004 for delivery with the Fall/Winter 2005 collection. "I wore Pony's back in the day playing football and always liked their style," said Snoop Dogg. "I'm excited to be a partner in bringing the brand back and adding a little Snoop Dogg flavor, so get ready for The One and Only!" Killick Datta, Chief Executive Officer of Pony International and parent company Global Brand Marketing, Inc is just as excited about the collaboration as Snoop. "Snoop Dogg is one of the greatest entertainment successes of our time and working with him is an honor for Pony and for all of us," said. "Pony is committed to matching Snoop's high standards in everything we do under this incredible partnership and it is clear by his exclusive commitment to us that he has confidence in our ability to do so." Snoop, in his Doggy Dogg way, commented on the difference between his line of shoes and others and why they will be successful. "I have more flavor than the other artists. Pony is old school and I'm an old soul." WILLIAMS’ READY TO TAKE THEIR POSITIONS Serena and Venus ready for Wimbledon. *The super women of tennis are probably looking at the inevitable and that is playing each other…again in Wimbledon. Could that still be fun for them? Serena is the two-time defending champion, and Venus, a former two-time winner, were placed in opposite halves of the women's draw Thursday. The top-seeded Serena and Venus, at No. 3, could have been drawn in the same half, setting up a possible semifinal meeting, but they will meet because Serena wound up in the same half with fourth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, while Venus was drawn on the same side with French Open champion and No. 2 Anastasia Myskina. Three top Russians are in Venus Williams' half of the draw: Myskina, French Open runner-up Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova, the winner of last week's grass-court tournament in Birmingham, England. The Williams sisters drew easy first-round matches: Serena against China's Jie Zheng and Venus vs. Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian of Switzerland. Some are making a come back. Nine-time champion Martina Navratilova, 47, received a wild card to play singles at Wimbledon for the first time since losing in the 1994 final to Conchita Martinez. 'FAHRENHEIT 911' GETS POOR REVIEWS Republicans and Bush fans don’t want to hear it. *Michael Moore is closer to exposing more of Bush’s ugly truths that he doesn’t want seen. The education that one can glean from this movie will probably cause an uproar. A heavy promotional campaign for Michael Moore's film “Fahrenheit 911,”kicked off this morning with an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show where the portly fellow admitted that it is an attempt to smear Bush’s name and expose him. Wednesday, distributor Lions Gate reported that 422 theaters have been booked for the June 25 opening and was continuing its efforts to obtain more than 500. Originally it was reported that the distributor would clear 1,000 theaters by opening day. Liberal activist group MoveOn has asked its 2.2 million members to attend screenings of the film. If they turn out, the group said, "it'll send a clear and unmistakable message to the media and the theater owners that this movie is a force to be reckoned with." Another group on the opposite end of the spectrum called Move America Forward, is urging conservatives to call theaters and urge them not to screen the film. EUR SCREENING ROOM: ‘The Terminal,’ ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,’ ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ Marie Moore / eurfeedback@eurweb.com The Terminal [*****]is not only a film you run to see, but take friends and family. This is one of those improbable stories written with strokes of genius. During fits of laughter—you will probably have to see it twice to hear all the jokes—political messages are infused. An idea that seems so simple and asinine—a man from Eastern Europe forced to live at J.F.K. International Airport—turns into a really sharp and engrossing story. Be prepared for a special treat—Musician Benny Golson. Golson, who has a cameo, is the film’s impetus. The film stars Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stanley Tucci, Chi McBride, Diego Luna, Barry Shabaka Henley, Kumar Pallana and Zoe Saldana, who starred in “Drumline.” Steven Spielberg (“Amistad,” “E.T.,” “Jaws,” “The Color Purple”) directs. [PG-13] Dodgeball: A True Underdog [***]certainly doesn’t underestimate the draw of many moviegoers. Ben Stiller has been raking in the bucks at the box office for prior comedies with offensive humor and this is no exception. Add to that wrenches in place of dodge balls and players trying to dodge traffic but being hit by cars, both in the name of practice and you have a winner. Forget about two teams in competition for a $50,000 prize. Don’t forget the gay element—Vince Vaugh’s love interest is gay—and you have the perfect formula. Kate Veatch, Rip Torn, Jamal E. Duff, Chris Williams and Justin long also star. Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. [PG-13] Around the World in 80 Days [**]is another remake one wonders why was it was resurrected other than to put a kung fu spin on it. If kicks and slapstick is your shtick, then you will be able to muddle through this mindless mire. Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan and Jim Broad are the wary travelers and Frank Coraci is captain of the ship. [PG] RATING SCALE: *****Hurry, a must see ****Worth the admission ***It could’ve been better, but still interesting. **I was looking at my watch and returning text messages *Wait for the DVD GOT NEWS? I followed the link and saw it, and agree: That's one dumb-@ss picture. However, it appears to be a publicity photo that Mack 10 chose to pose for, to represent precisely the image he wanted to portray of himself. Clearly, this man thought he was looking good that day. Presumably, his people thought he looked good too, and sent the photo out for everyone to use. So I can't get mad at CNN for using the photo. Instead, I question Mack 10 for deciding to pose in what the rest of us feel is a preposterous get-up. That photo's so assinine it's funny, and I imagine the people who chose it at CNN had a belly-laugh all day regarding it.
