TV NEWS: More ‘Newlyweds’, ‘Ashlee’; Brokaw’s bye-bye; Haysbert underwater, Huggy evicted.(December 6, 2004)
*MTV isn’t done with the Simpson sisters yet. Nick and Jessica are coming back for a third season of “Newlyweds,” while J’s little lip-synching sister will return for season two of “The Ashlee Simpson Show.” And if that’s not enough, MTV will debut a new reality show staring Nick Lachey next year, along with “Meet the Barkers,” which will follow Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and his wife, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler. MTV announced that Ashlee’s “Saturday Night Live” tragedy and subsequent “hoe-down” will be chronicled in her show's new season, while Nick’s as-yet-untitled project will feature the singer “completely submerged in the artistic process” as he sets out to kick-star his career. *Over on the peacock, Tom Brokaw’s farewell as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” received the highest ratings for the newscast since Jan. 16, 1997. According to Nielsen, his swan song pulled 15.36 million viewers Wednesday night, well above ABC’s 9.2 million and CBS’ 7.2 million. *Dennis Haysbert of Fox’s “24” is the first civilian to dive to a legendary sunken WWII ship, and it was all captured on tape for the new Discovery Channel special “Secrets of Pearl Harbor,” premiering Dec 15 at 8 p.m. Among the sunken ships explored in the hour-long show is a Japanese midget submarine - one of five sent to destroy U.S. battleships in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The special will also show the dangers Haysbert faced with equipment that lets him speak underwater, and a unique oxygen/gas mixture that speeds up the process of decompression. *Antonio Fargas’ reality show tenure in Britain has come to an end, as Huggy Bear became the fourth player evicted from the UK’s “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here.” The 58-year-old blaxploitation king, who was “stranded” in the Australian jungle with an assortment of b-list UK celebs, had one challenge that involved the pouring of bugs on his head. As for the eviction, Fargas told BBC: "I've never been evicted from a home. I've been asked to leave a club.” Speak Out
