SHYNE’S RECORD DEAL MONEY FROZEN: Jailed rapper kept from $3 million payday until civil suit is resolved.(March 30, 2005)
*The ol’ “Son of Sam” law has been pulled out to keep jailed rapper Shyne from seeing any of the $3 million earned when he signed with Island Def Jam while in prison. Citing the law, which bars convicts from profiting from their crimes, Justice Michael Garson of Brooklyn has frozen the funds, to be held in escrow pending the outcome of the civil lawsuit brought by two bystanders wounded in a 1999 shooting at a Manhattan nightclub. The ruling, issued March 16, found that the funds should "be preserved for payment of any judgment received by the plaintiffs." Shyne, whose real name is Jamal Barrow, has been locked up since 2001 for the shooting that involved his former mentor Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs and Combs' then-girlfriend, Jennier Lopez. Combs was also charged in the case but was acquitted. Three bystanders were wounded. Speak Out
