Gospel singing sister duo Mary Mary continued their Black Music Month celebration with a “Live” invitation only listening party at the Sony corporate office in Los Angeles, CA.
Erica and Tina’s self titled Mary Mary CD will hit the record stores on July 19. and they shared the personal testimonies behind the songs on the project with GospelEUR. Erica and Tina were still excited about praising the Lord with President George Bush:
Queen James: What was it like celebrating Black Music Month with the President?
Tina: Girl!!! We was down there singing with President Bush. Good God Almighty.
Erica: When the invitation first came we were like Oh My God we’re doing the White House. And then when we got off the plane to actually go Tina was like, pardon my improper English, she said, “Do y'all know where we bout to go?” It was absolutely wonderful
Queen James: From celebrating Black Music Month with the President to entertaining us at this listening party promoting the July 19th release of your new CD Mary Mary. You ladies are having an awesome Black Music Month.
Erica: This record is where we are now and we love the record. Not out of arrogance or anything but we believe in the record. The record ministers to us and we prayed and asked God “Give us something good, give us something for the soul that’s going to reach the hearts of the people.” It’s us being us and if you want to know who Mary Mary is listen to this record.
Queen James: The song Believer is a very personal song. What’s the testimony behind Mary Mary being believers?
Erica: There’s a verse about our house catching on fire. We were coming home from church and my mom said “You know what we’re going to stay at your aunt’s house tonight.” We got a call a few hours later saying our house was on fire. The fire was right in front of my mom's and baby sisters' room and had we stayed there they wouldn’t have made it pass. This is why we believe God so strongly because he’s kept us so many times. Tina’s verse is talking about an accident where her car was turned up side down turned the wrong way on the freeway. She had not one scratch, bruise, nothing.
Queen: Wow. God is good all the time. Now I have to give you ladies A for effort for stepping out on faith with the big band song Biggest Greatest Thing.
Tina: We have to give all the credit to Warren Campbell. Warren came in the studio one day and was like let’s do this and I’m thinking are you crazy? I can’t do that. You might be able to pull it out of Erica but not me.
Erica: Tina was like I don’t know nothing about Big Band and when we listened to Ella Fitzgerald and we heard her scatting for like seven minutes straight and not taking a breath and all these incredible notes we took the risk.
Tina: And we pulled it off.
Queen James: Getting an artist to pick a favorite song is always difficult but you said your favorite song is Love You That Much. Tell me the testimony behind that song.
Tina: You have so many questions for God. God I need you… Show me where to go… Show me who to marry... show me what to do. Do this do that…. And he tells you what to do and you don’t do it.
Erica: It’s like do you really love him like you say you do because when you love someone you want them to be happy in the relationship. I look at my relationship with God like it’s a real relationship and if He tells me not to do something I DO NOT DO IT. That’s what the song is about. It’s an everyday testimony.
Tina: On top of that the groove of the song is so nice and so funky. You just start rocking.
Queen James: What words of wisdom do you do share with everyone?
Erica: I would say trust in God. Period. It covers so much in the grand scheme of who we are as individuals. Trust in God for every little bitty thing.
Tina: Girl that’s it in a nut shell. No comment.
