HURRICANE VICTIMS TO ORGANIZE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR SURVIVORS: Organization Will Lobby For Relief, Inclusiveness In Rebuilding

Events at National State of Emergency Conference to Include March, Creation of Relief Fund

    Jackson, MS -- In the midst of FEMA's move to cut off aid to Hurricane Katrina victims, survivors from around the country are coming together to create a general assembly to speak and act in a unified voice.

 

    The National State of Emergency Conference will take place over the course of three days beginning in Jackson, Mississippi on December 8 with a youth speak-out and ending December 10 with a caravan leaving from Jackson, Mississippi en route to the Congo Square in New Orleans where participants will assemble for a rally. Survivors will be joined by supporters and representatives from over 50 black organizations, labor unions, third world organizations and anti-racists allies.

 

    All will join survivors in a show of solidarity and support. December 9 will be filled with workshops addressing various topics beneficial to survivors. Moreover a Survivors General Assembly will be formed for the purpose of speaking for themselves and exercising their rights to self-determination.

 

    Survivors have raised the demands for immediate jobs, education, housing, clothing and food. The events of December 9 will end with a cultural program on black music with words from Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Dead Prez and Louisiana and Mississippi artists.
