FUGEES’ HILL AND PRAZ SPEAK OUT: Lauryn tells Essence of ‘toxic’ fame; Praz says he wasn’t feeling reunion.(December 22, 2005)
*In the latest issue of Essence magazine, Lauryn Hill says her decision to retreat from the music business stemmed from it becoming a "very toxic situation" for her. "I discovered people could only acknowledge red and blue and I was somewhere between. I was purple," she told the magazine. “And when I can't be whole, I have a problem. I was like, 'I've got to get out of here.’” Her three-year hiatus, she says, was spent "away from all social interaction," including the absence of music and television. "It was a very introspective and complicated time because I had to really confront my fears," she said. Hill said she also spent a lot of that time writing music and screenplays. She also tried out fashion design, and other hobbies that helped her become "older, wiser, and clearer." Her decision to nix the fashion line came from a refusal to see her designs "exploited, appropriated, copied and reproduced" by others. "Fashion is something I breathe," Hill said. "I wasn't really trying to share my style, I was just trying to be me and exist." Her reunion with the Fugees is coupled with a hope that other artists don't get "trapped in images that don't really reflect who they are."
Pras Michel *Meanwhile, Fugee member Pras Michel says he was a bit skeptical about reuniting with Hill and Wyclef Jean earlier this year, but decided to give it a shot after Clef convinced him the comeback would be worthwhile. "Lauryn Hill called Wyclef and then he called me,” Pras tells London magazine Time Out. “At first I said no, it was one of those things where you've kind of moved on. Then he came and spoke to me and I was like, alright, let's see what happens. We're all good now but you've still got three different individuals and three egos."
