NEW EDITION TO REUNITE AT ESSENCE MUSIC FEST: Bobby
Brown to join old members for rare
performance.
*The members of New Edition, including the ever-unpredictable Bobby
Brown, will reunite for one performance at the Essence Music Fest, to be
held July 1-3 in Houston. The reunion, if it happens, will be one of the few rare occasions
the entire group – including Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins,
Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant – have shared the same stage since Brown
was voted out of the group in 1986.
Other performers announced Monday include Diddy, who will host a
“Diddy and Friends” show, and singers Jaheim and Chris Brown. They’ll join
previously-confirmed performers Mary J. Blige, Steve Harvey, LL Cool J,
Earth, Wind & Fire, Yolanda Adams and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.
Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx has also been tapped to participate in the
festival’s “Now or Never” empowerment seminars, along with Magic Johnson and
actor Shemar Moore. This year’s seminars will focus on helping those
devastated by Hurricane Katrina. HILL HARPER SEEKS SUPPORT FOR NEW BOOK: Actor says the
young man in your life needs this
as a gift.
*Actor Hill Harper has written a letter urging consumers to pick up
his new motivational book as a gift for every young black man within
your personal reach.
“Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny,” due in April,
is part memoir/part motivational tool for young men and covers issues
surrounding the transition from boyhood to manhood, Harper notes.
“My book is written as a mentorship on paper, from the perspective of
an older brother rather than that of a disciplinarian or parent,” he writes.
“The goal is to start a movement of self-education and mentorship within
our communities.”
The “CSI: New York” star said it was an uphill battle trying to pitch
the book idea to publishers, most of whom refused the work, stating: “It’s
a great idea but we don’t believe men
of color read, and if they do we don’t
know how to reach them.” Hill writes: “In one of my book pitch meetings with another
publisher, I was told point-blank, ‘Hill, please don't write a book for
this population, we want to do a book
with you, but please not this book, you
are proposing a book for a population
that doesn't read.’ I AM ASKING YOU
TO HELP ME PROVE THEM WRONG.”
The actor, who graduated magna cum laude from Brown University
and holds a J.D. from Harvard Law
School, is realistic about the book
reaching its targeted demo.
“As all of us know, young men are generally not camped outside of
bookstores just waiting for ‘the next hardcover to drop.’ For many, this is
going to be a ‘gifted book,’ much like the books that have been gifted to
and inspired me such as ‘The Purpose Driven Life,’” writes Hill.
“Please pre-buy multiple copies and gift them to any young men or
parents of young men you know,” he urges. “The book is currently available
on Amazon.com at a 35% discounted, pre-sale price. The proceeds from the
book go toward my MANifest Your Destiny Foundation, set-up to award
scholarships to young men and women who want to further their education but
cannot afford to.” NEW FILM UNCOVERS SECRET SURVEILLANCE OF RAP STARS
‘Hip-Hop and the Cops’ reveal dossiers
kept on hundreds of artists and execs for
years.
*A new documentary film exposes a side of the hip hop industry that
has been long known, but difficult to prove.
"Rap Sheet: Hip-Hop and the Cops," from filmmaker Don Sikorski,
uncovers evidence that law enforcement agencies have been keeping secret
dossiers on hundreds of hip-hop artists and executives for years.
The film shows surveillance footage obtained by Sikorski from the
NYPD, the FBI and LAPD. Sikorski also found out that a nationwide task force
to keep tabs on rappers was set up by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
"I was amazed at the volume of intimate, private information that
this national network of police had gathered,” Sikorski told Daily Variety.
“But the more I talked to artists and cops, the more I understood that this
is a situation with few heroes and plenty of villains on both sides."
Sikorski scored his first research breakthrough for the film when
Miami police responded to a request he made through the Freedom of
Information Act. The film, which has yet to set a release date, also features
interviews with such rap notables as Russell Simmons, Kanye West, Busta
Rhymes, Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg and Damon Dash. Performances by Eminem,
Fat Joe, Jadakiss and Lloyd Banks of
G-Unit are also included.
PRINCE SURPRISES FANS WITH GIG AT L.A. RECORD STORE: Folks
lining up to buy “3121” got the real thing
along with it.
*As news of his averted house remodeling lawsuit was preparing
to hit the streets early Tuesday,
Prince, unfazed, showed up
unexpectedly at TowerRecords
in Hollywood and brought Sheila
E along with him to perform
a surprise set for fans.
Sporting a white top hat and jacket, the artist took the stage at
midnight and performed a set that included such classics as "Let's
Go Crazy" and "Purple Rain."
"It was an impromptu decision. He lives in L.A.," explained Serena
Gallagher, publicist for Prince's label, Universal Motown Records.
About 500 fanatics who had received special purple wristbands at 10
p.m. were allowed inside of the Sunset Blvd. venue for the rare treat. Lucky
audience members were even invited onstage for a dance contest as Prince
strummed alongside percussion from Sheila E.
ICE CUBE TO DEBUT TWO TRACKS AT SPIKE TV EVENT
Rapper to plug new album while
hosting network’s AutoRox
awards in Las Vegas.
*Actor-rapper Ice Cube will host and perform at Spike TV's second
annual AutoRox, the only nationally televised awards show honoring and
celebrating America's passion for the automobile.
For the first time anywhere, Cube will perform live his new singles
"Chrome and Paint" and "Why We Thugs" off of his forthcoming solo LP,
"Laugh Now, Cry Later" due June 6
from his own Lench Mob Records.
"I thought it was a good opportunity to perform on TV and get
the message out there," he told the
Associated Press from his office at Cube
Vision studios. The 90-minute show, to be taped April 7 at the Fremont Experience in
downtown Las Vegas, will air Tuesday, April 18 (10:00-11:30pm ET/PT) on
Spike TV. The star-studded homage to cars will feature such categories as
Best Luxury Car, Hottest Exotic, Convertible, Sports Car, SUV's,
and others.
A panel of over 30 high-ranking auto industry executives, designers,
media and celebrities will vote on the deserving nominees, to be announced
shortly. One industry icon, chosen for their major contributions to the
automotive world, will be recognized. ALICIA KEYS CHARITY GRATEFUL FOR M·A·C AIDS FUND: Singer thanks
cosmetics company for donating to her
Keep A Child Alive program.
*Alicia Keys expressed her gratitude for a gift of $170,000 given
to her AIDS charity Keep A Child Alive
(KCA) by the M·A·C AIDS Foundation,
a division of the M·A·C cosmetics
company that made the donation
through its Kids Helping Kids
campaign.
Keys serves as the Global Ambassador for KCA, a non-profit
organization that asks the public for a dollar a day to purchase AIDS drugs
for families in Africa. Kids Helping Kids is an annual holiday card initiative of the M·A·C
AIDS Fund, with 100 percent of sales going to support pediatric AIDS
programs worldwide. The cards, featuring artwork designed by children
aged five to 15 from Brooklyn public
schools, were available at M·A·C stores
and online. Many celebrities used the
cards for their personal holiday greetings
last year, with all of the proceeds going to pediatric AIDS organizations.
"Thank you M·A·C AIDS Fund. This takes the healing power of art
further to save lives. Thank you to Brooklyn public schools for supporting
Keep A Child Alive," said Keys. OPRAH CHOOSES SIDES IN ANISTON/PITT MESS?: Rumor has
it that TV mogul vowed never to have
Brangelina step foot in Harpo Studios.
*Oprah Winfrey has reportedly gotten off the fence – at least
publicly – when it comes to the drama surrounding her “good friends”
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. Star magazine quotes a source who claims the talk show maven has
promised Aniston never to have Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie appear on her
show as couple, believing such an invitation would be a slap in the face to
the actress. Although an appearance from the elusive couple would be a ratings
scorcher for Winfrey, the source admitted: "I don't think she wants
anything to do with them anymore." "Oprah sees herself as one of Jen's best public advocates - the
captain of Team Aniston," the source continued. "Oprah thinks Brad should
have had a baby with Jen. She thinks that Jen is the one that should be
pregnant right now - not Angelina," The source also claims Winfrey is against Brangelina ever getting
married, stating: “She said she hopes it won't happen, because deep down, in
her heart of hearts she doesn't believe they're meant to be together."
DETECTIVES LOOK INTO DEATH OF LIL KIM’S LIMO DRIVER: Former
convict allegedly beaten to death by NYPD.
*An investigation has been launched into the alleged police beating
of O'Neil Solomon, a one-time convict who served as an occasional limo
driver for music stars Lil Kim and Ashanti.
Solomon died on March 4, 11 days after the beating that allegedly
took place last month after he fled from a traffic stop in Brooklyn, reports
the New York Daily News. The medical examiner ruled Solomon’s death was due
to heart disease, not trauma. However, detectives are continuing to look
into the alleged beating as a possible trigger.
The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an independent group
that investigates police brutality claims,
began its probe when Janice Pinheiro,
a nurse who witnessed the February 21 incident, came forward to say she had
seen a group of policemen chase and later brutally beat Solomon.
"They just started to beat the mess out of him -- stomping him in the
head, stomping him in the chest," Pinheiro told the New York's Daily
News. "I said, 'That's enough. Stop
the beating, stop the beating. I see
everything and I'm gonna report it. You're gonna kill him.'"
She said up to 16 cops clamored to get a piece of Solomon.
"I saw their faces," she said. "They just looked so angry. There was
one cop trying to move another cop out of the way so he could get a piece
of him. He had his baton way up in the
air and just started hitting him in the leg."
Pinheiro says she was put in cuffs and taken to the 75th Precinct
stationhouse after yelling at the cops to stop. She was later released
without being charged. A police rep said the Internal Affairs Bureau would not take part in
the investigation because Solomon's arrest photos show no signs of abuse.
Lawrence Krause, Solomon's family attorney, says his client was
charged with leaving the scene of a crime and released on $2,500 bail. His
rap sheet includes arrests for stolen property, assault weapons possession
and sexual assault on a 13-year-old in 2000.
Krause said Solomon checked himself into Brookdale University
Hospital twice in the days after the beating after feeling sick. He began
vomiting on March 4 and was rushed to the emergency room where he was later
pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be cardiovascular
disease, but his family begs to differ. "A heart attack can come as a residual of many other things, and we
believe, in this case, it was because of this beating," Krause told the
Daily News. FILM/TV BITS: BET goes ‘Down Low’; ‘Tsotsi’ bootleg; Paula vs. Simon;
Smith’s ‘Thief’; Fantasia on Lifetime; Latifah’s ‘big booty.’
*BET News will explore the “down low” phenomenon within the black
community on a special program airing March 28. The documentary “Down Low
Exposed” will look into the secret world of heterosexual black men, some
with wives and girlfriends, who also have sex with men. The program
explores a variety of angles linked to the topic, including the impact that
men having sex with men while in prison is having on the spread of HIV/AIDS;
and the cultural taboo policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the black church.
The program begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
*Bootleg versions of the Oscar- winning South African film “Tsotsi”
are being circulated in that country with a different ending from the one
shown in theaters. According to the BBC, director Gavin Hood shot three
different endings before choosing the one in the current theatrical cut. The
pirated version, selling like hotcakes on the Johannesburg streets, contains
one of the abandoned cuts stolen from the editing room. Hood told the BBC
of the bootleg: "It's a rough mess, so anyone who buys it is getting a
poor-quality version." *Paula Abdul says that if she appears to look like a complete
lunatic on “American Idol” this season, it’s because of Simon Cowell. “He’s
worse than ever,” Abdul told In Touch Weekly of her fellow judge. “If they
say, ‘Paula is going crazy,’ the reason is Simon is whispering things in my
ear, like, ‘What’s the price of beans?’ Things that make no sense at all.”
*Will Smith will star in a feature film adaptation of the television
series, “It Takes a Thief,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Smith and
his Overbrook Entertainment partner James Lassiter will co-produce the
Universal Pictures film, which will star Smith as an amiable crook
blackmailed by the CIA into pulling off a heist for the good of the country.
"Four Brothers" scribes David Elliot and Paul Lovett are writing the script.
The original television series starred Robert Wagner and ran from 1968-1970.
*Lifetime announced it will air a biopic based on the life of
"American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino. The singer performed Tuesday before
ad executives at the beginning of a panel held to announce the network’s new
programming slate. New Lifetime Entertainment Services president
and CEO Betty Cohen and
entertainment president
Susanne Daniels said the biopic is
part of Lifetime's goal to continue to appeal to its core viewers while also
attracting more younger women. . *Queen Latifah is really feeling her animated mammoth character in
“Ice Age 2” because the little creature has ample junk in the trunk – an
attribute that has eluded her thus far. "I've never been told I have a big
butt really,” she tells Contact Music. “I don't have a big butt as far as
black people are concerned. I don't have a little butt, but to truly have a
butt is to have a booty. I never reached booty status and it's one of my
greatest shortcomings in life. If you can't have a big booty in real life,
you could at least have one on screen and in the animated world and so I'm
real happy about that." MUSIC BITS: Mariah a model?; Macy’s new LP; Shyne snag; MiJac and John
Legend?; Maudlin Apparel; Arie's 'Hair'; Diddy's deal.
*Mariah Carey’s new svelte frame has reportedly caught the eye of
several fashion houses who hope to recruit her for ad campaigns.
The singer has lost 20 pounds
over the past several months,
which has not gone unnoticed
by design label Louis Vuitton.
Last week, folks at the chain’s
Paris store were said to have shown interest after watching her film parts
of the music video for her new single “Say Somethin’.” Carey's spokeswoman
tells Contact Music: "Until now [modeling] has not been something she wanted
to do, but it seems the time is right. She's got quite a few fashion labels
after her and we are in talks." *Macy Gray has Natalie Cole, Outkast and Sleepy Brown making guest
appearances on her upcoming album “Big,” due later this year. The set was
produced by the duo Jawbreakers, comprised of Justin Timberlake and
Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas. According to MTV.com, the album is
currently in the mixing stage and is described by Gray as "definitely the
best album I've ever made," adding that it's a blend of classic Macy and new
sounds. "It's [going to have] everything: hip-hop, R&B, rock and roll ...
even, like, old folk music," she said. "We managed to come up with some new
beats, so it's real hot." *Jailed rapper Shyne hit a snag in his efforts to access money he’s
earned since behind bars. A conflict of interest led to the voluntary
removal of Justice Howard Ruditzky from a civil lawsuit filed against Shyne
by injured parties during the infamous December 1999 shootout at Club New
York. According to the New York Post, Ruditzky had to step down because
the Dershowitz and Dershowitz law firm
that previously represented the rapper
had also represented his brother-in- law. The artist’s team was hoping to
challenge the “Son of Sam” law, which prevents convicts from earning money
off of anything related to their crimes. *Michael Jackson is rumored to have collaborated recently with
Grammy winner John Legend in Bahrain. The news comes after G-Unit’s DJ Whoo
Kid told MTV that he met with the reclusive pop star in the tiny country to
discuss a possible duet with 50 Cent. *Michael Mauldin, a 30-year veteran of the music industry – and
Jermaine Dupri’s daddy – has entered the fashion world with his new line,
Maudlin Apparel. The collection features vintage tees, denims, cashmere
knits, hats, caps and outerwear for men and women. "Representing the fast
life, Mauldin Apparel celebrates its image as the premiere international
lifestyle brand infused by the subcultures of fashion, motor sports, music
and the arts," said Mauldin, president of Mauldin Brand Agency and CEO of
the Artistic Control Group. Mauldin's Holiday 2006 Collection will arrive in
store later this year. Meanwhile, Maudlin and his company are set to produce
September’s Billboard R&B Awards, an Otis Redding tribute and the
Scream 5 Tour.
*India.Arie’s triumphant new single, “I Am Not My Hair,” will get
new remixes courtesy of rapper Akon and producers Jazze Pha and Swizz Beats.
Last week, the singer shot a new video of the Akon version, which features
the Senegalese artist rapping about his own hair. The song is from Arie's
forthcoming album “Testimony: Vol. 1 Life & Relationships,” due June 27 via
Motown. *Sean "Diddy" Combs’ Bad Boy South label has inked a multi-artist
deal with Southern hip-hop label, Russell "Block" Spencer's Block
Enterprises. The first release from the new venture," explains Harve Pierre,
Executive VP and General Manager of Bad Boy Worldwide, "is solo rapper Yung
Joc, whose single 'It's Goin Down,' appears on virtually every southern
hip-hop mixtape. Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment and parent company Warner
Music Group will be involved in the marketing, promotion and sales of
several Block Enterprise artists. Upcoming releases under the new deal
include new projects from Boyz N Da Hood, Big Gee, Jody Breeze, Miami's Rick
Ross, and rock 'n' soul artist Jill Rock Jones. EVENT CALENDAR: Magic at Bodog.com in Vegas; Silver Belles
at Apollo; ‘Voices of Joy’ calling all
choirs; Williams plays Top Spin 2 in
Key Biscayne.
*Earvin “Magic” Johnson will be the keynote speaker for the third
annual Bodog.com Marketing Conference, which will be held at the Wynn Las
Vegas, July 23-25. The NBA legend- turned-philanthropic businessman will
address hundreds of conference attendees on the subject of branding. Calvin
Ayre, founder and CEO of Bodog.com, says: “Magic has served as a role model
for many, and it is a privilege to have him speak to our delegates about
branding -- a topic I am extremely passionate about." To find out more
about the industry event of the year, their mid-80s and older who danced
in chorus lines at the Apollo, the Cotton Club and other theaters in the
1930s, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday (March 26) at Harlem’s Apollo Theater
(253 W. 125th St.) as part of a tribute to their legendary careers. The
evening will also include a screening of “Been Rich All My Life,” a
documentary film about their lives. Directed by Heather Lyn McDonald, "Been
Rich" follows the four dancers (Marion Coles, Elaine Ellis, Fay Ray and Cleo
Hayes) for two years and lets them talk about their lives, from 12-hour days
onstage through movies like "Stormy Weather" and tours through South
America and Europe, where they
were greeted as goddesses.
Tickets are $10-$40. Call
(212) 531-5305. *"Voices of Joy," a forthcoming reality show, is on a nationwide
quest to find America's most exciting church choir. The competition will pit
church choirs from 12 key markets against one another in a series of
regional events this spring, followed
by nationally televised weekly
programs in the fall. Church music groups across the country are encouraged
to submit a tape or DVD of three songs by May 15 (additional entry information is
available on www.voicesofjoytv.com).
Over $1.3 million in educational scholarships
will be awarded to choirs as they advance
in the competition, with the winning group
receiving $500,000.
*Venus Williams, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova will face each
other in a new video game to be unveiled at the Nasdaq-100 Tennis
Tournament this afternoon in Key
Biscayne, Florida. The athletes will
play as their “virtual selves” in 2K Sports’
Top Spin 2 Virtual Tennis Tournament
Showdown, to be held 11:15 a.m. to noon at the Nasdaq-100’s Hospitality
Village. The Top Spin 2 sequel adds high-definition technology and the
inclusion of top players Sharapova, Williams, Federer, Andy Roddick and
Lleyton Hewitt. “Featuring Grand Slam events in venues that are alive and
dynamic, gamers can take the court online with more strokes and shot control
than ever before,” reads a statement. Top Spin 2 will be available in April
2006 for the Xbox 360, Microsoft, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.

EUR FEEDBACK (MYfeedback@eurweb.com)
*James Chrystal (no city given): "I stumbled across this blog (called Publi Cola) and the contents of it really bother me. In a nutshell, it appears as though a black man has been sentenced to death for murdering a white police officer. However, it also appears as though the officer was acting on an illegal warrant, a situation in which a Mississippi resident has the right to defend him/herself. I don't know if any of this is accurate, but it might bear further scrutiny on your behalf, as your site is a prime outlet of black-related news. Here is the URL:
