LABELLE SHEDS TEARS DURING CONCERT: Singer apologizes to crowd for ‘the worst show I've ever done in my life.’(March 28, 2006)
*You almost take it for granted that a Patti LaBelle show will feature the singer’s sturdy pipes belting her classic jams along with some wing-flapping and kicking off of her shoes. However, circumstances surrounding her gig at the Riviera Beach Jazz and Blues Festival in Riviera Beach, FL Saturday brought only tears of embarrassment and repeated apologies for her inability to give 100 percent. "I've never been this embarrassed in my life," LaBelle told the crowd as she struggled through her set. "This sucks. It's the worst show I've ever done in my life." The temperature had plunged into the low 50s by the time LaBelle took the stage at midnight, and the singer just couldn’t get it together vocally. She explained to the audience that she’s nearly 62, has diabetes and a heart murmur, and the cold weather was not helping matters at all. The R&B legend attempted to continue singing, then told fans wrapped in blankets for warmth that she understood if they got up and left. According to the Palm Beach Post, a steady stream of people walked out during her 45 minutes on stage after having waited hours through opening acts. "I've never ever given you less than I can give. I'm gonna give you everything you deserve," LaBelle told the crowd. The Grammy-winner tried to make it through "Lady Marmalade" with some help from folks in the crowd. She sang some gospel songs and "On My Own" before calling it a night. The incident in Florida sounds eerily similar to what we witnessed here in LA at the Greek Theater a few years ago. Her onstage actions made members of the audience very uncomfortable. Maybe it's time for our beloved Patti to take a break. What do you think?
