        *James Blake took one step closer to earning his first trip to the Nasdaq-100 Open quarterfinals by beating Jarkko Nieminen Monday 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. The tennis star is off to the best start of his career, having pierced the top 10 in rankings for the first time last week with a 21-5 record for the year. Seeded ninth at Key Biscayne, Blake needs one more win to earn a first quarterfinal berth in the tournament.      

       *The NFL will kick off its 2006-07 season with the Miami Dolphins visiting the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 8:30 p.m., the NFL announced Monday.  Also, the traditional two-game Thanksgiving lineup will been increased to three next season: the Dolphins play Detroit at 12:30 p.m., followed by Tampa Bay at Dallas at 4:15 p.m. and Denver visiting Kansas City at 8 p.m. ESPN will kick off its new Monday Night Football coverage Sept. 11 with a double-header: Minnesota at Washington at 7 p.m., followed by San Diego at Oakland at 10:15 p.m. (all times EST).      

       *Condoleezza Rice hit the links recently with teenage golf sensation Michelle Wie, who says in the new issue of Time magazine that she idolizes the Secretary of State and was on pins and needles during their time together. "I was like, 'Oh my God, it's the Secretary of State. They put me in charge of driving her around" in a golf cart, the 16-year-old Hawaiian high school junior said. "I was like, if I crash, the Secretary of State goes down with me."
