THE MO'KELLY REPORT: Pardon Me, Dallas Cokehead Goes Free?!

*Mo’Kelly once wrote a column starring Whitney Houston; detailing one of her many sojourns in rehab.  Let’s just say it raised the ire of many readers.  Y’all were none too pleased with Mo’Kelly for that one.

Although, I on the other hand found it to be quite amusing.  That edition of The Mo’Kelly Report was more than just a little bit hilarious.

            Anyhow…

My feelings were and are still the same, irrespective of one’s star status.  We should not applaud the use of drugs, their enablers or express “shock” at the prospect of a celebrity suffering from a drug problem later down the road.

The reasons are simple, as the signs of addiction are usually evident for quite some time.  In the Whitney Houston example, I pointed to her ABC interview with Diane Sawyer…the handwriting was on the wall then.

"I make too much [money] for me to ever smoke crack.  Crack is wack."
  - Whitney Houston (2002)

Consequently, I can’t ignore the parallels between that ‘city,’ (Houston) and these ‘cities’ (Dallas Austin)…it’s a damn Texas drug party of sorts.

We should all know the details at this point; famed producer Dallas Austin was arrested, sentenced and then pardoned for carrying 1.26 grams of cocaine in a Dubai airport.

Let’s cut to the chase and get some simple assumptions out of the way.

If you use cocaine, we can assume you are a drug addict…no ifs, ands, or buts.  I’ve yet to meet any ‘casual’ user of cocaine who was not already addicted or on the short track to addiction.  Using cocaine has only one inevitable destination and it’s never far away.  It’s like the man who jumps off the building with no parachute…it may be “all good” as he passes floors 110 – 23; but guaranteed, the asphalt is approaching.

If you can’t do without cocaine during air travel you’re surely an addict…and surely an idiot too.  In this post 9/11 world, if you try to transport anything beyond your tighty-whities and Old Spice aftershave…you deserve to go to jail, regardless of your country of origin.

The key word is ‘deserve.’  Unfortunately, Dallas the Cokehead has proven otherwise.

If you get arrested for the aforementioned stupidity and then claim ignorance as to the laws governing the transportation of narcotics into another country, you can add ‘liar’ to your list of titles.  Who DOESN’T know that transporting controlled substances from one country to another is illegal?  Who DOESN’T know that crime is dealt with FAR more severely in the Middle East than in the West?  Who DOESN’T know this, especially among those who travel extensively?!

"I'm pleading guilty but by mistake.  I had no knowledge and no intention of violating the laws of the U.A.E."

- Dallas ‘Cokehead’ Austin

      Yeah…and Mo’Kelly is Chilli’s (of TLC’s) Babydaddy.

The public statement/acknowledgement released by Austin wasn’t ‘stupid,’ it was simply a lie…a bad one at that.  If he didn’t ‘know,’ that mangy dog sniffing at your luggage and the underpaid, oversized customs agent who asks you all of those questions about transporting illegal, volatile and/or illicit materials should have been a clue or two.

This is not a point that needs to be belabored.  The pardon of Dallas Cokehead is disheartening on a number of levels.  It sends the message that once again, ‘celebrity’ trumps criminality and common sense.  It says that although this cokehead is a user presently and has used cocaine for quite some time…his habit will continue unchecked, untreated and unpunished.

What SHOULD be belabored and underscored is that the behavior is criminal.  And we shouldn’t search for any other euphemism in which to describe it.  Also, if there aren’t any repercussions for the criminal behavior, then surely there is no motivation for anyone to address the addiction, one could argue.  It’s pretty hard to conduct an intervention or rationalize with a cokehead that help is needed as long as the behavior is continuously enabled.  Nothing would get the point across better than a prolonged stay in jail…in the Middle East of all places.  If that doesn’t sober you up, nothing will.

A good year in a Dubai jail would have made the devil himself give up sin.  At the minimum, it would have made this cokehead go cold turkey and beat the addiction.

Austin has feigned contrition through his claims of ignorance.  Although Cokehead may be acting ‘ignorant’ and was allegedly ignorant of the laws of the UAE, Mo’Kelly is not.  Mo’Kelly knows that Austin became a consistent cocaine user in the United States and Mo’Kelly (and Austin) know that cocaine is illegal here.  One doesn’t limit drug use to only when he/she is in international airports…especially drug users, as their judgment is already impaired.  Even in the Netherlands, the use, importation or exportation of hard drugs (which cocaine is classified as) is illegal.  But this cokehead cultivated and supported his habit in good ol’ Hotlanta.

If somebody can explain to me how you can be a United States citizen and ‘legally’ obtain cocaine in the first place, please do.   We can also assume he had it with him ALREADY as he landed in Dubai.  So the criminality is beyond just his possession in Dubai.

The only fool here is Dallas Austin.  Then again, he did manage to beat a four year drug rap in the Middle East for no legitimate reason.  Maybe we are the fools?  This celebrity cokehead obviously knew something the rest of us did not…as the rest of us would still be in jail.

Then again, the rest of us would have had sense enough not to get arrested for drugs in Dubai in the first place.  So it depends on how you look at it.

In terms of Whitney Houston, her fans and her handlers turned a collective blind eye to her addiction…which ‘conveniently’ was during the height of her career.  Subsequently, Houston self-destructed, arguably taking her family right along with her.

Thoughts and prayers to Bobbi Christina…

Either Dallas Cokehead cleans himself up with this undeserved second chance or we will again be lamenting a celebrity self-destruction a la Whitney Houston.  I’m putting my money on self-destruction as there is no reason we’ve given Dallas Austin to stop using drugs.  There are no deterrents or repercussions associated or prison penalties attached to the aberrant behavior.  Until that changes, it’s unlikely Austin changes.

Thanks for contributing to the stereotype of young Black men and drugs Dallas.  Really do appreciate that.
