WHAT A ‘TESTIMONY’ FOR INDIA.ARIE: Singer scores her first-ever No. 1 album.(July 6, 2006)
*Perhaps fueled by her performance with Prince, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Yolanda Adams at the BET Awards last week, India.Arie has sold 161,000 copies of her new album “Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship” to enter the Billboard 200 chart at No. 1. The Universal Motown set’s pole position gives Arie her first-ever Billboard topper and best sales week yet. Her last album, 2002's "Voyage To India," debuted at No. 6 with 109,000. "'Testimony' is like the emphatic [release] of your experiences and how God has blessed you," she told Billboard of the album. "It's very much symbolic of what I've been going through for the past year putting this project together." Testifying along with Arie on the LP are R&B singer Akon, country stars Rascal Flatts and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones bassist Victor Wooten. “Testimony” loosens Nelly Furtado’s “Loose” from the No. 1 slot. Her Timbaland-produced album falls to No. 3, while Rihanna's "A Girl Like Me" moves up 12-5 and Gnarls Barkley's "St. Elsewhere" climbs 8-6. Outside of the top 10, Disturbing Tha Peace rapper Shawnna debuts at No. 13 with her album "Block Music" and Tha Dogg Pound's "Cali Iz Active" joins the party at No. 28. Speak Out
