COURTNEY VANCE SUED BY FORMER TALENT AGENCY: Lawsuit claims actor fired them to deprive them of extra commission.(August 8, 2006)
*A talent agency is suing former client Courtney B. Vance for unpaid commission, claiming they were fired by the actor to avoid the payment of benefits entitled under their contracts. In the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last Tuesday, Endeavor agency and Dolores Robinson Entertainment claim the actor terminated their contracts in August 2004 after he purportedly was not signed for another year on the NBC drama “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” But, after he fired his agents and managers, Vance and Studios USA Television, which produces the drama, agreed to extend his original agreement without any changes other than a pay increase. The plaintiffs claim Vance fired them so that he wouldn’t have to pay the increased commissions – which according to the lawsuit, should have been at least $126,680. Endeavor and Dolores Robinson Entertainment are seeking their 10 percent commission in connection with his earnings for the 2005-06 season of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” as well as for future seasons of the show. Vance, the husband of actress Angela Bassett, left the show at the end of last season. The plaintiffs also seek unspecified compensatory damages for breach of contract, and Endeavor asks the court to order a constructive trust for all payments received by Vance. Speak Out
