MARIAH LAUNCHES TOUR IN MIAMI: MTV review says singer impresses with vocals, but spends too much time changing costumes.(August 8, 2006)
*Here’s what ticket holders for Mariah Carey’s “The Voice, the Hits, the Tour” can expect based on Sunday’s opening night in Miami. According to MTV.com, Carey doesn’t disappoint vocally – she hits her high Cs – but she was barely on the stage due to numerous breaks for costume changes. Playing on screens throughout the two-hour concert were Spike Lee-helmed video clips calling attention to the rumors and gossip Carey has dealt with in recent years. DJ Clue also pitched in to kill time between Mariah’s outfit changes. Carey’s costumes were revealed in a media event last week, so no need to rehash the outfits. In a nutshell, MTV said she “showed off a lot of skin, wearing a black bikini with a cape, two different gowns with exposed midriffs, and a metallic red burlesque number that lent itself to lots of straddling poses behind a straight-back chair during ‘Breakdown.’” The Web site noted that many of her songs were reduced to snippets, including “One Sweet Day” with her homie Trey Lorenz. Also, opening act Busta Rhymes never returned as promised to join Carey on their song, “I Know What You Want.” Instead, Carey used Busta’s portion of their 2003 video during her rendition. The technique was also used to feature Jay-Z for “Heartbreaker,” Jermaine Dupri for “It’s Like That” and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard for “Fantasy.” A gospel choir appeared for Carey’s performance of “Fly Like a Bird,” one of the show’s big numbers, along with “Make It Happen” and “Hero,” according to MTV. She shooed her dancers off the stage to perform a more intimate rendition of "Don't Forget About Us" and "Always Be My Baby." As for her biggest hit, "We Belong Together," she belted that one during an encore – and nailed the song’s final dramatic note, MTV reports. Speak Out
